Visiting Artist: Forward Kwenda: mbira
8:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, Brooks-Rogers Recital Hall
The mbira, also known as the “thumb piano” is the instrument of choice for world renowned artist Forward Kwenda. Consisting of a wooden keyboard with 22 metal keys that are plucked by the thumbs and forefingers, this African instrument is steeped in the rich cultural tradition of oral music. Because oral music isn’t written down, mbira music is loaded with improvisation. Amazingly, not even Kwenda himself knows exactly what he will be playing! Come experience the music of the mbira performed by a man who has been heralded as “the greatest living mbira player today.”

Note: Tickets are required and are available for students to pick up in the music building on Friday from 10-4. Otherwise, they can be obtained at the door starting at seven on a first-come first-serve basis.
