Williams Concert and Chamber Choirs: Emotions Aloft: Romantic A Cappella Choral Music
8:00 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, Thompson Chapel
In their most recent performance the Williams choirs added their voices to the glory of the Berkshire Symphony. This Friday night they set out to prove that they can stand alone. This “instrument-free” program offers a taste of some of the greatest a cappella arrangements ever composed including nineteenth and early twentieth century works of fury, fables and fervor: motets by Anton Bruckner, settings of Goethe and Rückert poetry by Robert Schumann, and dramatic miniatures by Claude Debussy, among other works. Very noteworthy is a piece “Bogorodiste Devo” by Rachmaninoff from his All-Night Vigil, which was at one time banned in the Soviet Union for its deeply devotional character. Don’t let your musical experience be censored!
