In "The Persuaders," FRONTLINE explores how the cultures of marketing and advertising have come to influence not only what Americans buy, but also how they view themselves and the world around them. The 90-minute documentary draws on a range of experts and observers of the advertising/marketing world, to examine how, in the words of one on-camera commentator, "the principal of democracy yields to the practice of demography," as highly customized messages are delivered to a smaller segment of the market.

Welcome to CRBEHA, a project of WSU-Vancouver, the Idaho State Historical Society, Oregon Historical Society, Washington State Historical Society, and Washington State University Pullman. Funded by a grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services, the collaborative project sought to create a database with thematic coherence that would engage online researchers in thinking more deeply about the significance of the rich primary resources available in museums, libraries, and historical societies. We also hoped the project would serve as a model for other institutions that wanted to share collections and stimulate public interest in and use of those collections.

The present report provides an overview of the progress made in the integration of the economies in transition into the world economy during the period 2006-2007 and highlights major policy challenges faced by those countries. South-Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have continued to see strong economic growth as well as further progress in integration through trade, foreign direct investment (FDI) and labour migration. The pattern of production and exports, however, remains narrow-based, limiting the region’s potential benefits from full integration into the world economy. The major challenge for these countries, with variations in degree among them, is to broaden their growth base and reduce their vulnerability to external shocks.

The Chief Human Capital Officers Act of 2002 required the heads of 24 Executive Departments and agencies to appoint or designate Chief Human Capital Officers (CHCOs). Each CHCO serves as his or her agency’s chief policy advisor on all human resources management issues and is charged with selecting, developing, training, and managing a high-quality, productive workforce. The CHCO Act also established a Chief Human Capital Officers Council to advise and coordinate the activities of members’ agencies on such matters as the modernization of human resources systems, improved quality of human resources information, and legislation affecting human resources operations and organizations. The 25-member Council is composed of the Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), who serves as chairman; the Deputy Director for Management of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), who acts as vice chairman; the CHCOs of the 15 Executive departments; and the CHCOs…

A series of policy documents written directly to the next occupant of the White House, so that he can hit the ground running on the problems facing Americans today. PPI experts will propose solutions on issues ranging from economic growth to national security. This series is based upon a firm belief that our nation faces a series of challenges that cannot be skirted or put off any longer, and that the White House has an indispensable part to play in meeting these challenges. Throughout American history, the most effective presidents have used their constitutional powers and their "bully pulpit" to galvanize the nation and bring about necessary change. Such leadership has been tragically lacking for the past eight years, and the new president will have an opportunity to lead America forward on numerous fronts. PPI's Memos are intended as short guides on how to begin, building upon our organizational tradition of large, influential ideas that shape our national life.

NAPA’s Standing Panel on Executive Organization and Management undertook an initiative in early 2006 to assess the existing management capacities of the President. This included the institutional resources of the Executive Office of the President, as well as the use of non-institutional approaches such as governors’ task forces, use of the bully pulpit, etc. Based on its findings and assessments, individual panel members have led the development of a series of issue papers offering options for improving these capacities in order that the next President can more effectively address 21st century challenges. Over the past two years, the panel identified a series of issues, held panel meetings on each issue, and a lead writer developed an associated issue paper. These papers were then peer reviewed.

This project, funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, helps Iowa cities implement "citizen-initiated performance assessment" (CIPA), to ensure performance measures are citizen-based, politically credible and used by policymakers in decision-making. Participating cities in the project use information technologies to complement more traditional methods, such as citizen committees, focus groups and town meetings, to bridge the governance gap between citizens and city officials. The ultimate goal of the project is to institutionalize sustainable mechanisms of "citizen-initiated performance assessment" into the budgetary and managerial process of city governments.

After the 2008 elections, America’s policymakers will take a fresh look at the criminal justice system, which so desperately needs their attention. To assist with that review, leaders and experts from all aspects of the criminal justice community spent months collaboratively identifying key issues and gathering policy advice into one comprehensive set of recommendations for the new administration and Congress. This catalogue is the fruit of those labors. More than 25 organizations and individuals participated in developing policy recommendations across 15 broad issue areas. They then vetted those recommendations with a broader group of experts, representing a diversity of philosophies and points of view, to assess the substantive and political viability of each recommendation.

WHTP bridges the gaps between the partisan forces engaged in settling elections and the decision processes essential to governing by providing non-partisan information about the challenges of the American presidential transition and the strategies for overcoming those challenges. It provides these and other resources to presidential campaigns, to the president-elect, and to the new administration. These resources include three seperate report series providing a White House institutional memory, perspectives on past transitions, and advanced reserach covering special aspects of transitions and governing. The WHTP also provides unique analysis of the appointments process and a clearinghouse on other transition resources.
