The Minutes for March 8, 2000 

Introduction

Medha and Bert started off the meeting by stating that the run-offs will
be starting next week. Fletcher Brooks would like to know whether or not
the cardio equipment should be moved somewhere else in the building so as
to free up space for the weights.  The pro is that this would free up
space and the con is that it may separate athletes and non athletes more.

Student Faculty Committee Updates
CEP - Max Weinstein '00 could not make it to the meeting.
Library committee - Joe Urwitz '02 also could not come
Dining Services - Terri O'Brien '02 stated that they had not met since the
last time.  Dave Thal '03 stated that he would like to see an expanded
sandwich bar in Baxter.  Laddie Peterson '02 asked why they have two
special dinners in the different dining halls on the same night.  Instead
they might just want to have special dinners on more nights..  There were
many comments of the low quality of meat in the dining hall. Comments?

Elections Supervisory Committee - Students  had contacted the ESC about
charges against Rob McDougal and Brendon Quinn that they were campaigning
in Baxter yesterday.  They were found not guilty by the committee.

Funding Requests
MadCow - Art Munson '01 and Seth Brown '01 requested $ 800 for 800 copies
of the MadCow.  They received $200 from the dean's office and $200 from
the Political Science Department.  Joe Masters '02 asked whether they had
more contributers than last time, additionally he asked about the
offensive portions of last issue.
Art stated that they are trying to get more articles currently. They are
looking for @20 contributers.  They stated that the primary goal is to be
humorous and hence they did not mean to offend. 
Vote to fund $800: 24-3-0.


Social Responsibility Project - Biniam Gebre '00 introduced a project than
100+ people are currently working on in order to address issues of social
responsibility.  They hope to use lectures, discussions, debates,
multi-media presentations and other activities to inform students of the
environment and issues in the world around us.  They asked CC to endorse
the project and request some funding.  The Boston Globe and Images are
sponsoring parts of it and they have found funding from other sources.
They requested $5200.  Jason Stanley '00 stated that the money that they
are asking for will only be paying for all of it.  The total project would
cost @$65,000.  The total cost of the college will be $16,500.  Shenil
Saya '02 asked whether they are working with other groups who are also
planning events during the month of April such as BGLTU, Asian Awareness
Month and Queer Pride Days.  They have been working with the other groups
to coordinate events.  Bet wanted to ensure that we would not be
detracting from other events.  Erin Troy stated that this is a great idea
and that we should fund it.  There was discussion whether SAC should pay
for this because this is a Student Activity.  The SAC budget has been
allocated towards concerts which have already been contracts.  There was
much debate about the SAC budget and CC's involvement in what SAC's budget
is being used for.  There was also a lot of discussion as to whether we
would have enough funds for nationals.  Everyone agreed that this was a
valid cause and that this should happen.  Carrie Ryan stated that she felt
as though the president's office should

Steel Pan Ban - Chabeth Haynes '02 stated that they would like to come
next week.
College Bowl - Joel Iams '01 requested $468.50 for college bowl nationals.

Residential Improvement Committee - Phil Swisher '01stated that they
wanted to solicit feedback considering the RIC proposal.
There was an opinion that was sent to Nishant Nayarr '01 which was opposed
to the RIC proposal and which expressed  a lot of anger towards the
current social planning under the Housing Committee.
Bert stated that the RIC proposal was to improve the housing committee.
Allessandra stated that the RIC proposal does not seem to address minority
concerns.  Nancy stated that a lot of the problem is the dialogue. Phil
stated that this year the housing committee  has been very open to
non-traditional parties.  Heather stated that we should focus on the RIC
proposal and not on the criticisms of housing committee.  Carrie
disagreed. She stated that we should solicit opinion as to all student
concerns so that housing in general can be improved.

Opinions - 
1-3) Concerning Elections - A student wondered whether it would be
possible to split the elections
- A student wanted ESC to publish why the booker/swisher ticket was 
- A student complained about the presidential candidates advertising on SU
boxes

Carrie was sent opinions stating that there should be clearer reasons into

Open Time -
Joe Masters '02 is working on amendments to the ESC bylaw.  Some changes
will include an immediate summary. 
JOSE - Voting on one page next time.  Participation is the highest ever.
The percentages are slightly off.

He was informed that the CUL has decided that no names will be published
on housing plans during housing draw on WSO.  WSO is asking for a
statement as to why.  Carrie Ryan stated that this would be punishing the
individual.  June Yi stated that this was not decided on by the CUL.

Joe will work on ensuring that this does not occur.

He then mentioned that it was ironic that everyone is so strapped for
money and that our school's endowment is 1 billion.
He also stated that the social can be improved in ways other than through
the housing committee.
Elizabeth Moulton '02 stated that CC should fund the Social Responsibility
Could a manual be made to relate all the committees together. (Housing and
CC etc)

There was discussion as to whether CC should be meddling with SAC's
budget.
