Possibility of an Outdoor Skating Rink and Rumors of Past Keg

Parties in Sawyer Library!

Medha and Bert started off their term by giving the floor to the Committee of 2010, a committee established by Pres. Payne, which will be examining long term goals of the school.

----Professor Hill first spoke about the objectives of the Committee. Their main goal has been to establish where they wanted the school to be in 10 years. The Committee now wanted to hear about what the students wanted to see happen in the future at Williams College. The Committee is composed of the following faculty members: Kathy Hill, Chip Lovett, Michael Brown, John Burman, Phil Darrow, Lee Park, and President Hank Payne. Students brought up the following topics:

- Carrie Ryan ’00 brought up the issue of the inadequacy of the fitness center. She spoke of how better facilities were necessary to represent our excellence in athletics. She also mentioned that the new facility above the squash courts was a great start. Kristen Sullivan ’01 provided the committee with an example of the problems of the present facility. She mentioned that women’s teams, who often go in together to work out, find themselves constantly waiting for the women’s free weights.

-Elissa Schevinsky ’01 spoke of how she would like to see stabilization of the size of campus so that it can reflect the resources we have here.

-Heather Matthews ‘02 spoke of the council’s continued efforts to reduce class size. She felt as though this was an issue that wasn’t going to die quickly, and therefore something that needs to be fixed in the long run.

-Erin Troy ’01 spoke of restructuring departments that do not seem to attract many students, such as the foreign language department.

-Bert Leatherman ‘00spoke of the space deficiency in the Studio Art Building, felt by both Art Studio Majors and other students, who are often left searching for space where they can express there artistic talents.

-Lloyd Nimetz ’01 spoke of the fact that he could not take classes (and hence, can not complete a major) because too many professors are away! He continued to speak of how many students can not get any access to the studio arts because they cannot take introductory Art studio classes. Medha Kirtane ’00 spoke from personal experience and stated how she attempted to get into Arts 100 three times and still was not able to take it.

-She continued to speak of how specific students were not able to feel comfortable in classrooms and the professor was not able to deal with certain race-related issues - Perhaps some professor training is needed.

-Nelson Hioe ’00 stated that the college should begin establishing more social gathering spaces for students. He spoke of the need to improve the use of Goodrich. Owen Boger ’01 brought up the issue of activity funds running out because of the changing social (ex: Yolanda Rucker’s fund ran out before Spring Break).

-Ryan Mayhew ‘01 mentioned that more support from the administration is needed in order for student groups to bring student activities to campus. Professor Darrow asked whether recent Leadership training sessions were working. Ryan responded by stating that the trainings have helped but more needs to be done.

-Kristen Sullivan ’01 spoke of how the Advising System needs to be improved for both freshmen and sophomore years

-Sheraz Choundary ’00 stated that there was a need for increased transportation to off campus locations.

Professor Hill then mentioned the main topics that the Committee of 2010 has recently

been working on:

- The Curriculum:

- thinking about a core curriculum

- encouragement of interdisciplinary goals

- increasing experience-based learning

- increasing courses that focus on public affairs- internationalism, globalism

- To ensure that Williams College continues its main goal of Effective teaching.

Any ideas or comments about the Committee of 2010 should be sent to Professor Hill at chill@williams.edu

----Budget Requests:

Jonathan Miles ‘00 then requested $700 to pay for the College Bowl National Tournament in Gainesville. After much discussion, this passed 22-1-0.

----Student/Faculty Committees:

- Library Committee- Clare Murphy ‘01

Are the library aisles to narrow??? …well, Claire Murphy stated that they are 15 in. to small according to the handicap regulations. Also the college may need to build an addition because the collection size is increasing.

This summer- all carols will be wired for access to the networkJ . Erin Troy ‘01 asked why the printer in the basement isn’t in the computer room itself. There seems to be no need for it to be at the reserve desk. Elissa Schevinsky ’01 brought up the fact that library hours are too short. Supposedly the library was opened 24 hrs in the past and guess what happened -- Keg Parties in the library. Medha Kirtane ’00 stated that the availability of lab tops in the library should be expanded and better advertised. Todd Rogers ’01 brought up the issues of changes at the Matt Cole Library. Clare stated that Sawyer Library is not too keen about what is going on at the Matt Cole Library. Members of CES feel as though the Matt Cole Library won’t be preserved. Clare stated that Matt Cole Library would always exist. He then asked whether the first floor was supposed to be one of the most exciting social places on the college campus (According to Todd "More socializing goes on there than in Goodrich!")

Any comments can be sent to Clare at 01cam.

- Academic ComputingSheraz Choundary ‘00

Ami Parekh ’01 mentioned that the Baxter computers are always broken and that it would be nice if the one computer, on which the keyboard letters have been switched, was fixed. Carrie Ryan ’00 requested that an emailing station be set up in the Studio Art Building. Todd Rogers ’01 stated that in the future all students should have(or be given) a computer. ( Sheraz is pushing for this through the committee for 2010)

Any comments can be sent to Sheraz at 00sac

---- Medha Kirtane ‘00 then spoke of the Issues of Community on Campus. She spoke of the development of a small group of students who have been attempting to establish large forums to speak to community issues. She said that many feel as though the council should be proactive in providing a sense of community on Campus since it is a representative of Campus. Council echoed voices of agreement. Heather Matthews ‘02 spoke to the need of CREATIVE ideas to get people interested in community issues. Owen Boger ‘01 said that discussion of community issues after the freshmen year first-days is necessary. Sean Glasheen ‘01 spoke of how it may be a good idea for freshmen to speak to the issue 2-3 weeks after they have been here, instead of immediately after they get here, so that they feel more comfortable. Elissa Schevinsky ‘01 stated that she feels as though the discussions should be open to the campus as a whole and not limited to MinCo groups. Nelson Hioe ‘00 states that Council could be beneficial in bringing issues that MinCo generally addresses, to the entire campus

Any ideas or comments can be sent to 00bmw or 00mjk.

----Open Time:

Carrie Ryan ‘00 wants to make sure that the ‘substance-free’ debate does not die out. She feels as though there needs to be more non-alcoholic events on campus so that there is not a social division between students that consume alcohol and those that don’t. This topic will be coming to Opinions Unplugged soon…get your ideas ready.

Owen Boger ‘01 —came up with a way to use the Outdoor basketball court during the winter months --- make it into an Ice Skating Rink??? Medha Kirtane ‘00 said that she would look into that and informed the council that the court will be getting a fence soon to prevent air balls from rolling into the Tennis courts.

Erin Troy ’01 states that there was a need for more ash trays outside of buildings.

Bert Leatherman ’01 was interested in changing the election bylaws because of issues that came up during the last elections. Nishant Nayarr ‘02 will continue to work on this. Bert also wants to work on getting more people to run for College Council. He questioned whether students on financial aid should be allowed to be exempt from their work study requirements if there are extremely active on campus???? Sean Glasheen ’01 proposed getting rid of the work-study REQIUREMENT all together.
