April 16, 1997

Last night College Council, in the hermetically sealed Griffin Hall, began the '97-'98 term under the Cowley-Harman regime. Attendance was stellar. The mood was bubbly. Sam Abelson opened discussion with a summary of Opinions@wso.williams.edu. They ranged from mice in West to a free CD jukebox in the Rathskellar. Many, like an outdoor bball court, vending machines in Baxter and a quieter ATM, are being handled by College Council members as we speak. President Payne came to report on the current Williams College Reaccreditation process, a rather fascinating self-evaluation carried out by private colleges. It hits every aspect of life here: from undergraduate life to urinals; if you want to learn more, contact the PresidentÍs office and you can get a current briefing memo. All budgets addressed were passed and they include the Hawaii club, Williams College Democrats, Senior Log Lunch and Williams GrassRoots Music. See your rep. for details. SLAC (Student Leader Advisory Comm.) was brought up to consider how they will fit in with the various leadership organizations like Gargoyle and CC. Mac and Amanda will continue to keep the Council abreast of the relations between Council and SLAC. "Grant of Powers," a common a method of recognition (by the trustees) of a student governments role and influence at Williams-type colleges, was brought up by Bert Leatherman and an Ad Hoc committee is in the works to look into it. Lastly, Mac Harman brought up the housing draw and told of the tale of a student who stuck up a faux list with his own name at the top of the housing picks...no more the case! The draw will be simulcasted by WCFM (so says Mike Darowish) and hot and heavy interviews will ensue with the top and bottom pick getter (Chris Bell and an unnamed frosh, respectively).
