Possibility of a Constitutional Change and the Results of the Student Faculty Committee Elections will be out soon!!
(first off A big thanks to Nelson Hioe 00 for writing the last minutes for meJ )
Introduction
Medha Kirtane 00 started of the night by stating that the elections committee met this past weekend, and decided on the new student-faculty committee appointments. During this week all students will find out whether or not they have been appointed to a committee. We received numerous amazing nominations and the decisions were very difficult to make thanks to everyone who took the time to nominate themselves for a position.
- Bert Leatherman 00 stated that WSO will present the housing draw live on the Web so that students know what rooms have been taken before it is their picks turn to decide on next years housing.
- Bert Leatherman also mentioned that he would like to see a bonfire like last years that was run by Ned Sahin98. Carrie Ryan 00 stated that SAC is currently looking into this and hopefully some members of council will be able to work with them in getting this off the ground
Student-Faculty Reports
- Ami Parekh 01 stated that the Calendar and Scheduling Committee has not met since their last report to College Council, but if anyone has any Calendar and Scheduling complaints they can email them-01amp.
- Monisha Agrawal 99 also stated that the Registrars Committee has not met since their last college council report. Elissa Shevinsky 01 was wondering if it was possible to not cap classes at 40, and whether the Registrars Committee would have anything to do with this. Any comments or question to 99mka
- Carrie Ryan 00 reported about whats new in SAC. Ben Folds Five APRIL 30th - they will be on David Letterman on the 27th and on Saturday Night Live the day after they leave Williams. Theyre BIG, theyre BAD and theyre HERE.
On Friday May 7th, there will be 3 comedians coming to Williams J - it will probably be in Mission.
Outdoor Currier Club sold out, and 250 students were turned away. SAC did not expect such a turnout and they are trying to set up another night of the outdoor fun Any comments about SAC to Carrie at 00chr.
No report was given for Campus Environmental Action Committee (CEAC) if you have any questions about the committee Contact Christine at 01cap.
Student Faculty Committee Elections
the list proposed by the Elections Committee to Council passed 20-0-6. The results will be on the web by the end of the week
The Election Supervisory Committee Proposal by Nishant Nayyar 01
The proposal in its entirety will be posted on the College Council Web site by the end of this week.
A summary of the proposal:
Composition The chair will be a self-nominated member of the student body chosen by the appointments committee. One student shall be selected from MinCo, and one from the Housing Committee. The College Council Presidents will be ex-officio members with no voting rights.
Duties The committee will ensure that the elections are free and fair, and that all self-nominations are solicited at least a week before the first day of elections. They shall be responsible for publicizing the elections and they shall count the ballots with assistance of the College Council.
The finalized version of the entire proposal will be sent to all house representatives by the end of the week and will be available to all students.
After reading through the proposal, it was stated that the " composition" part of it was unconstitutional. The constitution states, "The Elections Committee shall be composed of the Vice-President, or a Co-President, the four campus At-Large representatives, and the three class At-Large representatives. The Committee shall screen nominations for Council appointments and supervise elections, referenda, and constitutional amendments." Hence, in order to change the present state of things the constitution will need to be changed by a vote of the entire student body. The discussion was tabled so that representatives could speak with their constituents.
Class Size Report
After going over the slight changes that had been recommended by the council last week, and discussing course capping, Matt Haldeman 01 proposed an amendment to the proposal which would change the councils statement on the difference between ideal lecture and discussion class size. The amendment was passed --- 21-5-0. The class size proposal then passed 23-1-2. The finalized version of the report will be on the College Council Web Page by the end of the week (BIG THANKS TO ERIN TROY01!)
