College Council
Debates Committee Appointments, Discusses Health Center and NCAAs
Last night the College Council had a meeting loaded with big issues. Heres the inside track on what transpired:
Ruth Harrison and Donna Denelli-Hess of the health center came to clear up ideas about health services. There is the same number of beds (8) as always. Students who cant pay the $5 fee get free AIDS tests. Co-president Kate Ervin 99 promised to arrange funding so that tests for all students are free. Students who are so sick that they lose awareness will be sent on to North Adams Regional Hospital for their own safety. The health center and security are cooperating to ensure the confidentiality of students in transport. If you endure an unusually long wait at the health center, walk back to Ruth Harrisons office and shell see what the holdup is. Ms. Harrison, who is just finishing her first year as director, is seeking lots of feedback from students. Visit her, or contact her at ruth.g.harrison@williams.edu.
The elections committee -- the at-large reps and co-president Kate Ervin -- recommended student appointments to campus committees. Some Council members were concerned that the elections committee was recommending a certain few people for too many committees, especially these certain committees examine the weightiest issues. As a result, the Council voted to postpone until next week the decision on appointing committees in order to give the elections committee time to consider whether it is in the best interest of the campus to recommend a wider variety of people. The Council did however approve the appointments to SAC since SAC is depending on its new members to help with upcoming events, like They Might Be Giants on May 9.
Other items of interest:
With no response yet from the B & G telecommunications office to the Councils request of installing tone-dial phones in Jesup for voice mail access, Ivan Calabuig-Williams 99 is making personal visits to Jesup and B & G to ask for the phone upgrade. (Ivan also wants Williams to climb the USDA ladder to get better beef. He says hes tired of horsing around.)
Co-president Will Slocum 99 reported that Dining Services is considering staggering or extending the hours at certain dining halls. Great news! Hell keep tabs on the progress.
Many Council members expressed concern over the predicament of the dozen or so freshmen with nowhere to live next year. It was mentioned that rooms will open if people withdraw over the summer (hardly a happy remedy) and that some faculty houses/apartments might be converted into student housing. Matt Bryson 99 plans to visit the housing office to get the whole story.
The venue for Fridays 9:00 P.M. Spring Fling bonfire organized by Ned Sahin 98 is now Cole Field instead of Baxter lawn. More room to party with One Fell Swoop!
At the forum on the new NCAA post-season policy, speakers Pat Manning and Harry Sheehy, both coaches, and senior athletes Alana Teutonico, Dan Bullock, and Lauren Gioia relayed their disappointment and anger over the decision to allow only one team from NESCAC to participate in NCAAs. The College Council and lots of students in the audience expressed the same dislike of the compromise reached by the NESCAC presidents. Ill have a full write-up of the forum tomorrow. Thanks to all who participated in the discussion and to all who volunteered for the committee of 14 students to rally support at and beyond Williams to seek a better post-season policy. If youd like to join the committee, e-mail me (00arl) or Will Slocum (99wjs).
More tomorrow on NCAAs after the econ test,
