College Council Wraps Up Year
Jim Hodgkins, director of dining services, made a guest appearance to endorse the new table-tent "Did You Know" affirmation. He had much more good news than the revelation that the bacon is Hormel® brand and the scallops arrive fresh. Mr. Hodgkins is trying to rearrange dining schedules, perhaps by eliminating breakfast at Mission to avoid spending any extra on wages, to allow for extended dinner hours at one dining hall. Driscoll may be the place since teams eat late there anyway. Mission CC reps said that breakfast in Mission lets people roll out of bed and eat without having to trek to Baxter, a nice perk on mornings when work looms heavy and something worth keeping. There will be no change next year in breakfast and dinner points, as had been speculated at the last CC meeting. Dining services also aims to deliver a less predictable menu schedule next year. Sugar cones and Belgian waffles will be the sign of the times, and you'll be able to wash them down with drinks in bigger glasses, thanks to the suggestion of Nancy Walworth '00. Seniors may be able to buy fewer than 10 meals if John Rivera-Dirks '99 and Jan Postma '99 have their way. The input collected from Opinions Unplugged in the mailroom has been presented to dining services and will be considered as they make more plans for next year. Have other ideas? Mr. Hodgkins invites anyone to his office in the back of Baxter lounge.
After a presentation by Eric Soskin '99 and Bert Leatherman '00, CC unanimously endorsed the statement of the NCAA Advocacy Committee, a group of athletes, CC reps, and other students that formed after the CC-sponsored forum on the new NESCAC policy that restricts post-season play. The statement on student sentiment will be sent to alums, trustees, the press, and student governments at other NESCAC campuses in order to rally support for open post-season play. If you'd like to read the statement, check out the CC website.
Ryan Mayhew '01, the manager of Goodrich, next fall's new student center, gave a fine presentation about the progress of renovations. Ryan reported that there will be a snazzy coffee bar open daily until 3 A.M., thanks to the subliminal inspiration of the constant playing of the Matchbox 20 hit in the fitness center. Naima Glover '99 and Sargeant Donovan-Smith '99 will manage the coffee bar. Lots of new computers and other communal gadgets will be available to student organizations in the expansive group space on the top floor. (Join a group today to get in!) Chris Bell '98 came out of retirement to cut a few jokes and report that his work with Medha Kirtane '00 has been successful to secure construction of an outdoor basketball court behind Mission. The cost? Just $30,000 (lights extra and under consideration). Many thanks to the wealthy alums that smooth operators Chris and Medha have talked into donating. CC may also give a couple thousand. The Mission volleyball court will be forever in our memories; as a consolation, B & G will fix up the ones at Perry and Dodd.
We can expect a small US Postal Service station in Baxter, according to Will Slocum '98. Most CC members thought this would be a great service, though a few were concerned about making the lines longer in the mailroom. This project is in the worksnothing definite yet.
Max Weinstein '00 from MHINDS, a group that promotes mental health, came to ask for funds for a stress-buster in Baxter lounge. The big budget item was food, which the CC rarely funds. CC sent Max away with $370 for two masseuses and a TV/video combo but asked him to look elsewhere for ice cream money.
Phil Swisher '01 and Janet Iwasa '99 brought good news about next year's CC bussing to airports. Dee-lux coaches will add Boston to their routes, and transportation will be provided four times: Thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, and the end of the year. Trips can be charged to term bills next year too. No bus service is planned for the end of this semester due to the changing of the guard in the bussing and CC ranks. John Rivera-Dirks '99 is trying to arrange trips in college vans, but nothing is confirmed yet.
Anh Nguyen '99, CC treasurer, presented the work of the Finance Committee. CC approved the allocation of a quarter-million bucks among 8 subgroups. In the fall, treasurers of similar clubs will meet to haggle over the division of this money among the organizations in their subgroup.
Liz Lee '01 reported concerns sent to opinions@wso. Complaints came in about the need to spend all money added to Eph Cards before next fall, the glut of multiple copies of the same e-mail message, and profs who give exams during reading period. Jan Postma brought up the urgent need for doors on the bathrooms of Lehman, a concern of a privacy-seeking frosh during Opinions Unplugged in Baxter mailroom.
During committee reports, Matt Whalin '99 mentioned that Water Street Books might become more full-service, offering computer supplies and software to fill the void left by the demise of the ill-fated computer store in Jesup. A list of texts for classes will be online next fall. Paul Friedmann '00 reported that the Committee on Undergraduate Life recently approved the new party policy, ably explained in the Record this week. Though a few vocal profs don't like Winter Study, January at Williams won't change much, according to Meghan Byrne '98 of the Winter Study Committee. Co-president Will Slocum '98 still detects rumblings from the higher-ups about Winter Study, though, and he'll stay on top of the issue. Meghan also says that profs who dislike Winter Study may get to opt out in favor of teaching an extra semester course. As a follow-up to a committee report last week, there is no threat of a Mac phase-out. On the contrary, Jesup has reaffirmed its support of the Mac platform and will continue to provide services for both PC and Mac users.
