college Council is now not only a representative body, but a regular one. Yestereve, by indulging in some of Bell's Bum-Knee Booty (in this case two slightly bruised apples and a handful of dried fruit, mostly comprised of prunes and papaya), we hope everything, like NCAA, Party Policy, comes out right. One other issue before delving into things, Council, with the new Frosh reps, Mac Harman (back from the World Series), and numerous locals filled G 1 to the point where we may move into more spacious quarters next week. I.Recognition/Funding: A.) Riding Club: Originally thought (Bell-influenced) to be the "Writing Club" focused on reorganizing the alphabet. Once Council was clear on this one, we learned this batch of hoofers were offered $300 (asking $2000) by FinCom for transportation to and fro the riding grounds. This passed 25-2-3. B.) Club Hockey was recognized by a vote of 30-0-0 so they (Jed White) promote via the DA. C.) Prof. Liza Johnson came seeking a little financial assistance for her project bringing Steve Fagin, a well-known video artist, whose World Premiere for his film on contemporary Cuba Tropicola will be here in late November. I'm getting thirsty just thinking about it. With him will be Mezecla, a band that draws from a range of West African and Caribbean music and dance traditions and comprised mostly of employees from a small Mid Eastern bistro on Water Street. With some funding already, and others pending, Council committed $500 to the cause (30-0-0). II.Cte Reports: A.Lecture Cte: Liz Willmott (99esw) spoke to the procedures of handling requests, a new lecture series entitled "Chapin Hall Lecture Series" which is in the planning stages but will be allocated a healthy $10k. B.Diversity and Community Cte: Medha Kirtane (00mek) revealed involvement in "Race in the Classroom" lecture series and a project on students presenting their theses, to name a few of the aspects of this Cte. C.Campus Environment Advisory Cte: Sarah Connolly (00sec) briefed us on this cte's latest, which has been working to (1) improve recycling on campus; (2) IPM, a lesser known acronym involving pesticide; (3) assurance that the new computers in Baxter are comprised of 8% post-consumer ice cream and 92% recycled Weekly Calendars. Bell's learning curve rotated slightly when Sarah spoke of investigating "indoor spraying" of n at Williams. It hadn't occurred to me before, but this is probably why you see so few weeds under the sink or behind your shoes in the closet, where they would usually thrive. III.Opinions: Jeremy Rothe-Kushel tackled the Opinions this week. 1.)Have the dial tone such that you would know if you have Voicemail©. Deb Wilkie is checking it out. 2).A 24-hour library like Bronf. but accessible after 8pm. Leatherman on it. 3).Changing the DA Opinions ad. Bell on it. 4). Women performers on Campus. Passed on to SAC. 5).Checking your phone bill via the internet is now Liz Lee's project. 6). Unfortunately email regarding the slow nature of Colrain didn't arrive in time for the meeting. Update: Research on a small blackboard next to the Snack Bar for messages like "Jill: We're in the Snack Bar" or "I'm single (the unshaven guy playing himself in Scrabble by the condiments bar)" was conducted by Brian Connors and could be reality shortly. IV.Members Open Time: Anh Nguyen encourages ALL to come to the AASIA prize-rich Scavenger Hunt (1st prize: $50, 2nd: $20 at Papa C's 3rd: A good backrub) from 8:30pm 11:30pm, at the MCC. Groups up to four. Kate, on behalf of SAC, reminds you Williams PD has yet to snub the Log so frequenters should continue to frequent and if you have never been, it is the best (only) party in town. Fara (99fn) of Wood is soliciting thoughts about renovations to West and Wood. Current plans include a removal of the center staircase of Wood. Medha (00mek) would love to hear from interested houses on the 3 on-3 hoop tourney, for apparently we need to put a hurt on an already solid faculty squad including Oakley (Francis), Hill (Victor) and Jordan (Denise). V.Proposals: All kinds of changes in the Constitution happened. Beginning with a better definition for absences by Sam Abelson and C.Bell (passed 29-0-1). Then we added FITCH frosh to the BBQ Frosh rep (passed 28-0-2). CPR & CEAC was added to the Student-Faculty cte report list (passed 29-0-1). Lastly, Jeremy Wilmer proposed to limit further money to SAC or if more were to be given, it would come from their 98-99 budget. After a good deal of discussion and in spirit many agreed SAC funding here forward will be limited, amending it permanently was voted down (0-30-0). |
