About WilliamsReligionDiscussion
English (USA)

Welcome to the discussion!

This list-serve hopes to serve as a place for Williams students and community members to discuss the intellectual engagement with religion on campus.

You're welcome to join just to listen in, but if you feel comfortable, we'd love to hear about about your own experience studying religion. Below we've provided a few questions to help begin the conversation, but feel free to disregard them.

If you identify as religious, do you read or participate in discussions that help you develop a deeper understanding of your religious commitment? How have talks with religious leaders on campus contributed to the development of your religious identity? Have you used any of the classes in the religion department to think about your personal religious commitments? If not, what types of classes would you like to see offered? Do you feel you should receive academic credit for research that helps you develop your religious standpoint on social or political issues? To what extent do you feel like you bring your religious identity into the classroom? How has engaging with other faiths helped your own religious development?

If you aren't sure if you identify as religious, or you identify as non-religious, what do you feel you've gained from engagements with different religious standpoints? How would you feel about studying religion alongside devout classmates who are openly engaged with their personal understanding of their religious commitments? What types of religious studies classes have you found most valuable? Are there other types of classes you'd like to see offered? What do you feel is the goal of a liberal arts education, and what kind of engagement with religion do you feel contributes to that goal?

All postings are anonymous, though if you feel comfortable, you are welcome to include your name, along with any details about yourself you feel might be relevant. Your contributions will help the Williams community rethink its approach to the study of religion.

Anyone is more than welcome to contribute, but please be considerate and respectful of the fact that many of us on this list-serve take issues of faith incredibly seriously.

If you have any questions or concerns about this list-serve, please email Jacob Levin (10jjl@williams.edu).

We look forward to hearing from you.
