Williams Cycling Team Training Update: Early October

Good old-fashioned Petersburg Pass

Good old-fashioned Petersburg Pass

We’ve made it to the start of the season! I’d like to begin by reminding people what this team is about by means of the best quote ever (present on the cycling team training manual).

“Arise Riders of Theoden!”

Now, on to training. We’re going to move into training mode slowly and deliberately. For the next few weeks, training should be simple and enjoyable. Here’s the list of “do’s” and “dont’s”

Do’s:

– Ride your bike
– Don’t ride too hard– NO INTERVALS. PERIOD.
– Ride with friends if possible
– Enjoy the beautiful fall weather

Dont’s:

– Don’t do intervals
– Don’t ride to exhaustion
– Don’t start with super long rides– build up to them with shorter rides

Ultimately, the goals of this first training block are:

– Get used to spending time on the bike
– Have fun
– Start building an aerobic base

So, your training week might look like riding 3-6 times per week (depending on how much you’ve been riding previously) for relatively short distances, maybe with the exception of one “long ride,” whatever that means for you.

DON’T DO INTERVALS. If you’re riding indoors, keep it chill and don’t stress your body too much. Don’t worry– there will be more than enough intervals coming in due time.
