How does this work?

Auditions are a chance not only for you to show off your voice, but for us to get to know what kind of a person you are, and just as importantly, for you to get to know us! The process is simple, and usually takes about 15 minutes:

  1. The Questionaire: Easy stuff - what's your voice part, what experience do you have, are you allergic to Canadians, etc...
  2. Scales: We'll run you through a couple of vocalizations to get an idea for your range and tone.
  3. Tuning exercises: We'll play a couple of short lines on the piano, and you sing them back so we can get an idea of your pitch and tuning control.
  4. Solo: Your time to shine! We do a lot of background singing in GQ, but everyone gets a chance to sing a solo, and we want to hear you! Prepare a couple of verses of a song to sing a cappella for us that will show off your solo voice for us.
  5. Have a cookie.

What about callbacks?

Callbacks will be posted by midnight on the last day of auditions in Paresky. They will take place on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

If we call you back, you'll come in for one more round of auditions, this time with another auditionee. This audition focuses on how well you can sing with other people - we'll run you through a simple a cappella song and then you'll get to sing it with other members of the group so we can see how well you blend.

We also ask you to prepeare a second solo song that really shows off your distinctive voice, or the kind of music you like that you sound really good doing!

When do I find out if I got in?

Saturday night the directors of all the groups meet and singers are alotted to groups. Each group has a different way of letting its new members know, but you'll definitely know by Sunday morning if you're in!

Any other advice?

Obviously, relax! Of course we're looking for good voices, but we also want to find people who will mesh with the group. Have fun, don't be afraid to chat with the group inside or outside of the audition room, and most of all, be yourself! What makes GQ different is that we actually seek out people with crazy music preferences so that we can get the most wide-ranging, fun concerts! Let it all hang out - we're not looking for uptight singers, we're looking for people who want to have a good time and sing the music they like with the people they like, too.
