We encounter God through prayer by expressing adoration, petition, intercession, thanksgiving, or praise. Catholics have a rich tradition of vocal prayer, from the Our Father and the Hail Mary to the many and various prayers of holy men and women. Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction are a continuation of the worship given to Christ’s Real Presence at Mass. Vocal prayer is essential to the Christian life and may be prayed communally as well as individually. Prayer may also consist of meditation or contemplation. One of the most popular Catholic prayers is the Rosary, an inward meditation with Mary on the mysteries of Christ’s life, structured and anchored by repetitive vocal prayer. It may be prayed alone or in a group. Other popular prayer devotions include the Divine Mercy Chaplet and the Angelus, as well as the Liturgy of the Hours.
"Prayer is the most powerful weapon a Christian has. Prayer makes us effective. Prayer makes us happy. Prayer gives us all the strength that we need to fulfill God's commands. Yes, indeed, your whole life can and should be prayer."
- Saint Josemaria Escriva
