Wrestling Hour Bonus -- Do Well Or We'll Kill Ya, Fool

OK. Here it is. The long awaited, much anticipated wrestling hour bonus. Don't play trivia without it! This one may be a little bit on the difficult side, but it is intended to separate anyone who has seen a match from those of you who plan on putting down "Hulk Hogan" for every answer.

Guessing won't be penalized unless you guess the Hulkster (which could make the grader unhappy).

Good Luck! And remember, when you know the answers, I'll change the questions! (Rowdy Roddy Piper)

  1. How many tag teams did Captain Lou Albano manage to the WWF title?
    16.

  2. Captain Lou Albano was once a co-holder of the WWF tag team title. What was the name of his team?
    The Fabulous Kangaroos.

  3. Mr. Fuji did one better. He and his partner were two-time WWF title holders. His one-time partner, a 25-year veteran of pro wrestling, recently turned "good," and defeated Larry Zybysko for the AWA world title. Name this wrestling artifact.
    Mr. Saito.

  4. The current WWF tag team champions, Demolition, recently started their third term on top. But Ax and Smash are each two terms away from tying what former great's record of five? (Hint: they are not all with the same partner.)
    Tony Garea.

  5. In his first appearance after coming out of retirement, Rowdy Roddy Piper fought an entire match with one hand behind his back. Who did he demolish in this mismatch?
Memory suggests it was Steve Lombardi, "the Brooklyn Brawler."

  6. In 1979, Dusty Rhodes set the record for the shortest reign as NWA Heavyweight Champ. He was crowned on August 21, and dethroned five days later. Who did he beat for the title, and who took it away from him?
    Harley Race, Harley Race.

  7. Off The Top Rope: Randy "Macho Man" Savage usually finishes off his opponents with a flying elbow off the top turnbuckle. Only two wrestlers have ever kicked out of a pin attempt after being hammered by it. One was Hulk Hogan (who did it twice). Who was the other?
    The ULLLL-timate Warrior.

  8. Most people would assume that Andre the Giant was just too heavy to climb the top turnbuckle of a wrestling ring. But two rivals found out that with a little support (in the form of a steel cage), the Eighth Wonder of the World could make it up. Both of these unfortunates were victimized by a vertical splash from the top rope. Name these pancakes.
Big John Studd was one; Bobo Brazil is one educated guess for the second.

  9. Wreslters come from many walks of life. For example, Butch Reed was a football player, Randy Savage was a minor league baseball player, Dick Murdoch was an accounting major in college (we'll come back to him in the next question), etc. But George "the Animal" Steele had a peculiar profession, considering his wrestling persona. What was his occupation?
    School teacher.

  10. Dick Murdoch is one of the few wrestlers to have gone to, and graduated from, college. While at West Texas State University, Murdoch played football shoulder to shoulder with another future wrestling great. This teammate went on to play pro football with the New England Patriots. Eventually, these two joined forces, and for three years were a dominating tag team. A couple of years ago, they reunited for a very brief period. Who was Murdoch's classmate, and what was the name of their infamous tag team?
    Dusty Rhodes; The Texas Marauders.

  11. Rick Martel has held more than his share of tag team titles. Listed below are his five most recent championships. Name his tag team partner for each period (team names will not be accepted).

    1. 1978 Georgian (a minor belt in the NWA)--
Sorry, the only wrestling minors we know about are Jerry Lawler's dates.

    2. 980 WWF--

    3. 1981 WWF--
      Tony Garea.

    4. d) 1982 Canadian--

    5. e) 1987 WWF--
Tom Zenk (as the "Can-Am Express").

  12. How high is a regulation steel cage?
    Ten feet.

  13. Who was recently named the wrestler of the decade (for the 1980s) by PWI magazine?
    Ric Flair.

  14. Who is the only man to have held the WWF World, Intercontinental, and Tag Team titles?
    Pedro Morales.

  15. Who is the only man to have held the WWF World and Intercontinental titles, as well as the unofficial title of "King" of the WWF?
Randy Savage. (He was actually the "Macho King.")

  16. Two WWF wrestlers have been married inside the squared circle (the ring, for those of you who don't know Gorilla Monsoon's lingo). Both couples split up. Name both of the wrestlers (they are both male).
    Butcher Vachon; Uncle Elmer.
Randy Savage married Elizabeth. (Obviously all the marriages were bogus, but the Savage-Elizabeth one was particularly egregious. In the other two marriages, the identities of the brides scarcely mattered, and in Vachon's case, wasn't even revealed. But Savage and Elizabeth were major WWF personalities for years. Actually, the couple was married in real life, and for their "wedding," pretended they were "finally" marrying. Previously, the already-married couple had pretended they WEREN'T really married, when they were. (If cornered, the WWF would helpfully explain that while Randy and Elizabeth Poffo WERE married, the superstars Randy "Macho Man" Savage and The Lovely Elizabeth were not.) They are now no longer married-- but ARE still together as their characters (who are also not married). Closure at last.)

  17. How fast was the quickest pin in WWF history, who won it, and what happened to him after it?
King Kong Bundy over S.D. (Special Delivery) Jones, in 9 seconds. Knowing King Kong Bundy, he probably ate a big meal and took a big dump.

  18. There have been two "living legends" in the sport of kings. In the WWF, the title was deservedly given to Bruno Sammartino. In the AWA, the title was self-proclaimed by what eternal bad guy?
Larry Zybysko, who famously turned heel on Bruno circa 1980.

  19. The Machines were one of the most popular "good guy" gangs in recent WWF history. In all, five masked people wrestled under this name. The Giant Machine and the Super Machine were the originals. Name the other three.
The Big Machine; the Hulk Machine; and the Piper Machine.

  20. Up To Date.....
Give the most recent names of the following wrestlers:

    1. Terry Taylor
      The Red Rooster.

    2. Tiny Lister
      The Mighty Zeus.

    3. Lawrence Tero
      Mr. T.

    4. Big Bubba Rogers
      The Big Boss Man.

    5. The Rock (this was Don Muraco's nickname, not his wrestling name. "The Rock" wrestled with Sting in a tag team known as the Blade Runners)
      The Ultimate Warrior.

  21. We Are Family.....
The von Erichs are probably the most well-known wrestling family. But there are several pairs of relatives who put on the tights. For each of the following, please give the names of the lesser-known relatives in the wrestling game. All of the answers are names of active wrestlers (as of April 21).

    1. Bret Hart (two brothers)
Owen, Bruce. (Davey Boy Smith brother-in-law.)

    2. Arn Anderson (brother)
      Ole.

    3. Tito Santana

    4. Dusty Rhodes (brother)
      Dusty ate him.

    5. Bob Backlund (son)
MISTER Bob Backlund would never sully himself with the touch of a woman, you plebian! (This is one wrestler we've forgotten.)

    6. Bruno Sammartino (son)
      David Bruno Jr.

  22. Wrestlemania
Give the winners and losers of all six Wrestlemania main events (for IV, just give the result of the final match of the tournament).

    1. --
Hulk Hogan and Mr. T beat Roddy Piper and Mr. Wonderful (when Cowboy Bob Orton went to hit Hogan with his everlasting arm cast, and accidentally hit Orndorff instead).

    2. --
Hogan beats King Kong Bundy in a steel cage (after surviving a Bundy splash into the steel-- despite the fractured ribcage inflicted by Bundy only weeks earlier!).

    3. --
Hulk Hogan beats Andre the Giant by clean pin (after a shocking bodyslam).

    4. --
Randy "Macho Man" Savage beats Ted DiBiase, the Million Dollar Man (with outside help from the Hulkster).

    5. --
Hulk Hogan beats Randy "Macho Man" Savage to climax the tragic split of the Mega-Powers.

    6. --
The Ultimate Warrior beats Hulk Hogan, 1-2-3, clean!

  23. Contrary to popular belief, the Wrestlemania II main event was not the first time the WWF World Heavyweight Title was defended inside a steel cage. Several years ago, a World Heavyweight Champion successfully defended his title, in a cage match, against an Intercontinental Champion, who refused to put his title on the line. Who were the wrestlers, and who won?
Bruno Sammartino defeated Pedro Morales in Shea Stadium.
(NOTE: The "Intercontinental" champ is the difference here. There are many other examples of steel cage title matches, such as the Hogan-Bundy headline bout in Wrestlemania 2, just mentioned above. Most notably, there was the Hulk Hogan-Paul Orndorff cage match on NBC's late-Saturday wrestling show in the mid-1980s, where the finish was "so close" that a stop-motion clock had to be used to determine the winner. Humorously, Orndorff beat Hulk out of the cage by at least 10 seconds, and everybody live assumed he was the new champ; savvy post-editing by the WWF created the proper result.)

  24. In the last trivia contest, we were asked to describe four types of wrestling matches. Since there are SO MANY wonderful ways to hurt people, we're going to ask for four more. Identify (briefly but completely) the following matches:

    1. Diamond Miner's Glove Match
Typically, one of these super-hard gloves is placed on a pole high above the ring. Whoever can reach the glove is free to use it in the most awful fashion on his opponent.

    2. Texas Death Match
The match continues until one combatant is "unable to continue."

    3. Open Season Match
You have to completely cover your opponent in parsley, thereby seasoning him. (Did we mention we have no idea?)

    4. Flaming Death Match
Hmmm... this wouldn't involve some sort of fire, would it?

  25. Name the leagues where each of the following fought in his rookie year:
Florida-- the old NWA (as Terry Boulder).

    1. Rick Martel--
      Canada-- AWA.

    2. Dusty Rhodes--
      AWA.

    3. The Ultimate Warrior--
Originally worked for Bill Watts, with Sting, as "Power Team USA." That was Mid-South. However, Sting stuck around when they were told they had to actually learn to wrestle. Warrior immediately hightailed it to WCCW (run by the von Erichs) in Texas and continued as Dingo Warrior.

    4. Kerry von Erich--
Kerry broke in under old NWA territory, until father Fritz got nutty and broke away to push them all to the moon, and over and down to Hell.

  26. How did wrestling promoters discover Mr. T?
Not in a "World's Toughest Man" competition, as I suspect the answer was supposed to be. That's where the makers of "Rocky 3" discovered Mr. T. Mr. T was already the star of that film and "The A-Team" when he debuted in wrestling.

  27. Lastly, the subjective question.
What was/is the greatest feud of all time, and why? Feel free to pick any battle of more than a couple of months, and give a brief outline of the major events. Personal biases are fun and encouraged. Detail is good, but too much of it is no fun for the grader. Remember, it's late, and our eyes are tired. Write in big letters.
(A dotted line beneath these instructions was labelled "Optional end point.")
Well, it IS subjective, but Piper-Snuka, Snuka-Muraco, Piper-Hogan, Hogan-Savage, Savage-Steele, Flair-Funk, and Flair-Piper are all worthy 1980-1990 candidates. "Hacksaw Jim Duggan versus Dino Bravo," "Koko B. Ware versus The Natural Butch Reed," "The Fabulous Moolah vs. Velvet McIntyre," "Corporal Kirchner versus Nikolai Volkoff," and "The Junkyard Dog versus King Harley Race" probably aren't.
