PHASERS ON STUN: THE NEXT GENERATION

The 51st Semi-Annual Williams College Trivia Contest, December, 1991

QUESTIONS

SUPER BONI

  1. (12:00) FOX TV (partial answers) -- 25 big questions on Star Trek: The Next Generation, then additional sections on The Simpsons, Married...with Children, In Living Color, Good Grief, Yearbook, Top of the Heap, Babes, The Tracy Ullman Show, Duet, Beverly Hills 90210, America's Most Wanted, True Colors, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, and Get A Life. How "The New Adventures of Beans Baxter" didn't get in there, I'll never know.

  2. (4 AM) Cult Movies (partial answers) -- Clumps of questions on each of the following flicks: Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, This is Spinal Tap, Easy Rider, Slacker, Harold & Maude, The Muppet Movie, Time Bandits, the Coen Brothers' films, Local Hero, Willy Wonka, Airplane, Plan Nine from Outer Space, Heathers, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Twin Peaks ("not a movie-- so sue us"), plus 8 miscellaneous questions at the end to make it an even 100.

HOUR BONI

  1. (12:00) Comics

  2. (1 AM) Sports -- "The Kinder, Gentler Sports Bonus," whatever that meant. Included multiple questions on Japanese baseball, as well as baseball novels, Canadian football, men's table tennis, women's high school basketball, Lady Byng Trophy winners, the uneven bars, the trotting Triple Crown, U.S. Women's Fast Pitch Softball, and the NBA Mascot Slam-Dunk competition. A weird friggin' bonus.

  3. (2 AM) 21 Different Instruments from 21 Different Songs Audio (answers) -- Not much explanation needed.

  4. (3 AM) Board Games (questions only)

  5. (4 AM) Dumb Lyrics Audio -- Dumb they were, too. One strange note-- both the 21 Instruments audio AND the Dumb Lyrics audio included clips of the 1971 song "Sweet City Woman" by the Stampeders, which was ALSO played as Song #44. In other words, we heard this song three separate times in one-half of one contest.

  6. (5 AM) Cross-Number Puzzle -- 11 spaces by 11 spaces, with 92 boxes for interlocking numerals.

  7. (6 AM) Comedians Audio -- Very simple-- audio clips of comedy acts; name the comedian.

  8. (7 AM) James Bond -- An incredibly thorough bonus that gets the obligatory "name all the actors to play Bond" question out of the way as #1. Francisco Scaramanga's license plate? Otydel II of SMERSH? Post-Ian Fleming Bond stories? Goldfinger's particular brand of golf ball? James Bond's haiku? Despite the insane level of detail, teams did pretty well, and the bonus was quite interesting.
