CAN'T DO PLAID! <THUD>

The 58th Semi-Annual Williams College Trivia Contest May 12, 1995

THE CONTEST RULES

QUESTIONS

SUPER BONI

  1. (12:00): The Spelling Bee (questions only) -- Nothing but Aaron Spelling and his 3,500 TV series. Sure, "Charlie's Angels" or "Fantasy Island," we could handle. But "Nightingales"? "Finder of Lost Loves"? Yikes! A terrifyingly thorough Super.

  2. (4 AM): Contract On America (audio section answers) -- Lots of maps...

HOUR BONI

  1. (12:00): Cereals (answers only) -- The latest variant of the sample-giveaway bonus, this one offered individual pieces of different cereals.

  2. (1 AM): The Story of OJ Audio (answers) -- Most audios are "variations on a theme," such as drum solos, screams, snippets of TV themes. This was an innovative audio that attempted to use song clips to create a narrative of the neverending Simpson Saga. A big success from the dubbing deck of Jon Young.

  3. (2 AM): The Mysterious Bonus -- Deb Tomaselli and Chris Aylott's 80-plus-question look at mystery novels, crime stories, writer awards, fictional detectives from various media, pseudonyms, detectives' residences, dialogue excerpts, film death, and children's mayhem (Hardy Boys, Clue, etc.)

  4. (3 AM): Covers Audio (answers) -- This music bonus (name the song, artist-- and the song's original artist) contained way too many clips from the "If I Were a Carpenter" tribute album.

  5. (4 AM): Weird Science -- 15 science history questions, 8 define-the-phenomena descriptions, 16 name-the-scientist/crackpot, 5 short essays (on the Earth's shape, the Living Unicorn, the Piltdown Man, Venusian theory, and crop circles), and a closing section on cold fusion.

  6. (5 AM): Movie Lines Audio

  7. (6 AM): I've Had It Up To Here With Mainstream Top 40 Pop Music -- Even they knew that "alternative" meant nothing; still, loads of Talking Heads, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Bauhaus, Veruca Salt, and the like. Followed by an all-rap section featuring one section on "spot the sample," and one on the Ices (Cube, -T, and Vanilla).

  8. (7 AM): Fashion (questions only)-- Questions about style, clothing etiquette, design history. Then, paintings of clothed people from ten different historical eras (Tudor, Baroque, Victorian...). Then, clothing from the ten decades of the 20th century. Finally, and perhaps most memorably, two pages of fabric swatches.
