As noted elsewhere in this archive, subsequent research has shown that the tiebreaker was NOT the "first EVER," but the second.

The only team to solve the Ultrabonus-- All The Sugar, Twice the Caffeine-- received 5 points, thereby precipitating the tie score in regulation.

The 369-368-358 score above is a monstrous total. (Poor "Anything Other Than Itself"-- 358 points and they come in THIRD by double digits!)

However, there is a context for it. The 1980s was a period when teams experimented with the scoring of various Trivia elements (most notoriously in the "video game" contest run by Smedley Terrace when Phasers on Stun scored over 290,000 points).

In this contest, Hour Boni were worth 15 points apiece, with Supers going up to 35. With the then-new Ultrabonus (plus the 1-point overtime), that represented 66 points not typically available. The top three teams seem to have gotten most of these. Action scoring may also have been bumped up to 5 at this time; if Pygmies were first to make the move, add 8 more new points into the pool. A perfect score this semester would have been 418 points.

This was one of the exceedingly rare contests to feature TWO teams in the Top 20 whose names included the word "Buddies."
