I'm writing to let you know about two events being put on by various groups on campus this week. *First*, on Tuesday, February 20, Williams Catholic is hosting a lecture entitled "Does God Exist?" by Professor Michael Gorman of Catholic University of America. The lecture will be at 7pm in Paresky Auditorium. Here are the details of the talk's content: "This talk will focus on the question of God's existence. We will explore what it would mean for there to be a philosophical argument for God's existence, and we will take an initial look at arguments of that sort. We will also consider the limits of philosophy." Please contact David Vascones (djv1) with any questions! *Second*, Peer Health is beginning a Menstrual Wellness Campaign. FemCo will be running a discussion on the campaign on Thursday, February 22 at 8:30pm in Paresky, and there will be a menstruation celebration on Saturday, February 24 at 7:15pm in Perry Living Room. Here is some more information about the campaign: "Peer Health's Menstrual Wellness Campaign aims to educate those who menstruate?and those who do not?about menstrual health. This includes the menstrual cycle, premenstrual syndrome, menopause, and everything in between. Our hope is that the corresponding poster campaign will allow students on campus?and maybe even those beyond the Williams community?to learn more about menstrual wellness. The campaign will sponsor a series of events where we will encourage conversation about many topics related to menstrual health. We want to de-stigmatize this important subject and help provide safer spaces for people to learn more and share their personal experiences." Please contact Toni Wilson (tew1) from Peer Health with any questions! Best, Tamar Aizenberg -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Here is the event description: Rikers: An American Jail is a new, award-winning documentary from Bill Moyers on the men and women who have been incarcerated at Rikers Island jail in New York City. In association with Center for Learning in Action, the Davis Center and the Black Student Union, we're very excited to show the film for *free* on Wednesday, February 21 at 7pm at Images Cinema. We're also very excited that Pastor Benny Custodio, a former Young Lord leader and currently ordained minister who served time at Rikers, will be joining us for a Q&A after the film. The film has not been screened in our area nor at a college campus before. The Facebook event page is https://www.facebook.com/events/157786471543163/, and you can see a YouTube clip of the film at https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=DGIFLMAfjAw&authuser=0. Here's the description: "This *Thursday the 22nd in Hopkins 001 at 7:30 PM* join SJP and QSU for a discussion on *Pinkwashing*. What is pinkwashing? How is "gay rights discourse" used to justify the occupation of Palestinians? Join SJP and QSU for a presentation and discussion of how Israel's use of gay rights discourse has created a world in which the politics of homophobia and the politics of occupation are inextricably enmeshed. We will be introducing concepts such as homonationalism and pinkwashing: Pinkwashing - "The practice of a state or company presenting itself as gay-friendly and progressive, in order to downplay their negative behavior" Homonationalism - Reframing queer identities as not only compatible with but exemplary of the agenda of imperialist states - defining queerness as a western phenomenon. The State of Israel employs pinkwashing tactics by crafting policies that are hospitable and beneficial for Jewish LGBTQ+ citizens that do not extend to Palestinians. The "progressiveness" of these policies is used to negate and distract from the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and by doing so, erases queer Palestinian identities and resistance. We hope to highlight the presence of Queer Palestinians, the struggles they face under occupation and the role sexuality plays under occupation and at the checkpoint."
