The Writing Workshop consists of about 60 students who are paid to privately tutor other students in writing and public speaking. After being nominated by a faculty member, candidates are interviewed by the Workshop's supervisor(s), and some are selected to become tutors the following school year. Supervised by Joyce Foster (who is assisted by Jean St. Jacques), and led this year by Noah Susskind and Godfrey Bakuli, the workshop offers services in the following areas:

Steam Tunnels connect all the major buildings on campus. They are used to transfer the steam from the heating plant to the buildings during the colder months. The steam tunnels are large enough for people to crawl through, and in earlier generations of Williams students, crawling across campus via the tunnels was a popular pasttime.

This ended, reportedly, when a student fled Security through the steam tunnels and seriously injured himself in his haste, needing to be hospitalized. Since then, tunnels are very sensitively alarmed and locked tightly, although a few openings may still exist.

Today, tunnels may be enjoyed from aboveground during the winter months. When snow is on the ground, look for it to melt markedly faster in certain pathways a few feet wide, in certain predictable places every season. These are the strips of land above the imperfectly-insulated steam tunnels.
Two students were spotted at a booth in the North-East corner of Driscoll. They were seen lying on top of each other, playing tonsil hockey, and at one point placing their toungues in each other's ears. (Witnesses include: Tyler Auer, Laura Ellison, Kevin Coombs, and Eric Muller) (February 2006)

A group of Willy F-ers spotted a pair canoodling in one of the small tables inside Dodd. Not only were they visibly feeling each other up at one point, they were also in the main hallway, making it visible for everyone to see from every vantage point. At one point, the group was shocked to see the female's hand explore some very risque area down south... (Witnesses include: Stephanie Dockery, Wes Johnson, Cat Vielma, and Sam Wallace) (February 2006)
An ab workout just not good enough? Try finishing each sit-up with a little smooch in the weight room, where a couple has been seen to do the same on multiple occasions by Kevin Coombs and Eric Muller.

Upstairs in CES, in the old student lounge to your right down the hallway off the top of the main staircase. Pluses: contains couch, door locks. Minuses: interior door is of the office of Drew Jones, Hopkins Forest manager. Best to be somehow sure he won't be coming by while you're in there. I hear he's busy during maple sugaring season . . .

Ephporium? One couple was spotted smooching near the cereals. Said smooching was accompanied by a remarkable amount of buttock-caressing. (April 2006)
07ngshttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Easy_classes&diff=10274Easy classes2006-04-30T03:14:06Z
07ngs: /* Compsci 105 */

I know, know, we all came to Williams to take four to six challenging and rewarding classes every semester. Then we found how much we liked working for the newspaper or playing a sport or singing a capella or doing plays. Anyway, sometimes you need an easy fourth course. Let's make a list of guts. Please comment only on the size of the workload, and not on the quality of teaching. If there's not universal consensus that a course was easy, it would be relevant to mention whether you've had previous coursework in the subject, or if you're just a genius. If you want opinions about the quality of particular professors, please visit Factrak. Not to be confused with Hard Classes.

Easy classes (if you can do math)
PHY 109
workload- 2 hours per week

Compsci 105
workload- 2 hours per week

...As long as you know HTML and Java already. If you don't, those labs take all night.

Econ 110
For some sections: there are daily homework assignments, but you can actually complete them during the class that it's due. You'll probably have time to finish the next day's assignment, too. There were no projects or papers; just a mid-term and final exam.

:Estimated weekly workload: 0-2 hours
:Mandatory attendance? No

Not easy with Ralph Bradburd.

Psych 201
Kirby's section: If you are not good at math, this class will be hard. But if you have a sound grasp of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and occasionally division, and if you have a sort of understanding of how math works, this class is easy. You don't need to do any reading to do the course, which is good since the texts and reading assignments are really dense. Classes are small, so the professor will notice if you are not there.

:Estimated weekly workload: 0-2 hours
:Mandatory attendence? yes, since it's a small class
:Extra credit? No

Not easy with Ari Solomon.

Math 106
Taught by Garrity, this is an easy and entertaining class if you're already a math whiz who plans to do a PhD in math. Homework is optional, but TAs will grade it if you do it. There are weekly quizzes, but these involve only a couple of moderately difficult problems from the previous week's material. There are three exams, and about 10% of the class received a 100 on each of the first two exams. A significant portion of the class received under 70%, and a handful scored under 50%.

The third and final exam involves rote memorization of some fairly long proofs. If you've taken Calc AP BC, which presumably everyone in the class has done, there's very little material that is really new. One person got an A on about half an hour of work per week. Most people needed to put in at least two to three hours of solid work per week, and still found difficulties in the later part of the course, which introduces complicated theorems.

Math 106 requires a lot of hard work and should not really be on this page. If you're really good at calculus than I suppose it would be easy, but many people who considered themselves quite adept at calculus still found the exams very difficult and the homework very time-consuming -- far more than the half hour required for the exceptional student above.

However, even those who had a hard time with the class found Garrity's entertaining lectures to be worthwhile.

Astronomy 101
Easy (for me, at least, though I've heard that some others have disputed this) if you do the reading and show up for tests and labs. Missing an exam, has, in the past, resulted in almost automatic failure, though, even if you have good excuses and can make the exam up immediately, so be careful about that.

Econ 120
Sporadic problem sets that can be done at the last minute. Attendance is not necessary as the entire lecture (at least in one prof's section) is contained within a powerpoint presentation available through blackboard - print this out, don't take any notes. Readings from the course packet are assigned but not necessary. Exams are easy, especially if you've taken 110 before.

:Estimated weekly workload: 0-2 hours
:Mandatory attendance? No

Note: This is just my personal experience, but Econ 120 with Betty Daniel involves weekly problem sets, 2 papers, a presentation and debate on one of the papers, and two really hard tests and a final exam. Just to give you a good idea of how hard the tests are, the first one had a curve of over 20 points.

Math 175: Mathematical Politics: Voting, Power, and Conflict
Very light on actual math.

Easy classes (even if you can't do math)
PHY 100
workload- 2 hours per week.

Bio of Nutrition and Exercise
workload- 1 hour per week.

Music 101
workload- 1 hour per week.

Ling 101
Not only is Introduction to Linguistics easy, but it's probably one of the most fun and interesting classes you could ever take at Williams. It's taught by a knowledgeable professor who's willing to explain any and all details of a subject, and also willing to get into discussions of related (or even not very related) material. Most of the class is spent learning the International Phonetic Alphabet...go to lecture, sit back, relax, and listen to the funny noises as all the members of the class try to mimic Professor Sanders' pronunciations. This class is also great for picking up fun facts: where else can you learn to properly use phrases like "bilabial fricative," "spread glottis," or "plosive?" Ling 101 is a problem set class and requires a good memory, but if you have basic quantitative reasoning abilities, it's easy to handle.

Note: I never attended this class, but learned I.P.A. elsewhere, and it is not at all difficult to learn within the course of a few classes, tops, if you have a reasonably good ear for sounds. It is, also, a useful class for anyone who plans to go into singing, since terms like "plosive" come up fairly often there too.

:Estimated weekly workload: 0-3 hours

The person who wrote this has got to be joking

PSYC 101
It is not really that the material is easy, but this class is the only class I am aware of at Williams that has extra credit, in the form of participating in psych experiments that oftentimes are extremely interesting anyway. I got an A in the class and very rarely went to class on Friday mornings. The only section that you need to pay close attention in the lecture is Neuroscience, which many people have considered to be the most interesting set of lectures, anyway, and thus easy to pay attention to. Even if you don't do well on that test, you will surely ace the Cognitive Psych or Social Psych part and make up for it. This class is light on the reading, and since there so many people in it, you can find a study partner easily.

I would also add that there is very little in the lectures that cannot be found directly from the book. In fact, despite the fact that I attended almost every lecture, the notes I took down were basically just repeating what I'd read the night before.

Whatever you do, do not buy the textbook. It was revised three times while I was a student, and every time Kassin would claim "students must have the recent edition." Bullshit. If you don't believe, grab copies of your favorite two editions and check the text side by side. I'll be damned if I didn't find, my freshman year, that precisely the same text and figures were present in the 3rd and 4th editions, with a two page difference between editions. If you are lucky enough to take the class in a revision year, check out the free book table in the 1914 Library, even if you are not on financial aid. They'll be liquidating their "old" editions.

:Estimated weekly workload: 0-3 hours
:Mandatory attendence? no
:Extra credit? Yes!

Note: A great number of people have failed this course. Do not be misled by this information. It is necessary either to attend class or to do the readings. You can get away with skipping one or the other, but if you skip both, you will suffer.

Also note: Ok, although I know someone who has failed this course, I feel strongly that this is a result of a complete lack of understanding about what an easy or "low-maintainence" class is and what it isn't. i.e. you still have to study for the exams, and the material is still on par with college-level academics.

(Seconded. This class is easy to fail if you decide not to do the reading or if you regularly skip class, but easy to pass if you simply do the reading and pay a reasonable amount of attention during lectures. Most lectures are also fairly interesting, and most reading material easily comprehensible, so this should not be at all difficult for anyone smart and motivated enough to be at Williams in the first place.)

:Estimated weekly workload: 1-3 hours (problem sets)

Geos 104: Oceanography
Well-illustrated powerpoint lectures, an often fun and incredibly easy lab for two hours ever other week, pretty much no homework (though looking at your textbook doesn't actually hurt), and a field trip in the spring! This was one of the easiest and most entertaining classes I've taken here.

:Estimated weekly workload: 0-3 hours
:Mandatory attendance? I don't remember, but it's actually worth going

Philosophy 102
This is a difficult course if you are not adept at writing coherent and well-organized papers, and if you are not confident with speaking up in class and engaging the reading.

Has, in the past, been fairly easy provided you find philosophical discussion interesting. There are typically two sections, of which I only have experience with Professor White's version. Involves significant and frequent reading, but only page-long response papers twice a week, only one of wich was graded, while the other was reviewed by a TA. Class participation is important; do not
take this curse if you are shy about offering opinions. (It should be noted that it has been several years since I took this course, so it may have changed by now.)

Professor Cruz also teaches a section, where the only work is four six-page papers spread evenly throughout the semester, with the last one due during exams. These papers, however, are basically the only basis for your grade, but he doesn't grade so stringently that it's easy to fail. Participation in discussions is also important.

....vastly depends on the prof which you have. Cruz, Gerrard, White, Dudley, Mladenvoic and probably others, have all taught this course. Each prof injects their own special flavor into 102. This class is "easy" in being light on the workload, depending on the professor, but sometimes piecing together a coherent philosophical argument can be quite a bear, if it's not your thing. One might go so far as to say that this is an easy class for philosophy majors, but if you're a Div1 or Div3 major looking for an easy and mindless Div2 to fill your distribution requirement, this is not your best bet.

Actually, PHIL 102 is really only an easy class if you are one of those non-major dabbling types who thinks your'e just going to talk about "The Matrix" every day. In this case, you will pose a signifcant threat to your classmates' will to live.

English 115
Taught by Prof. Murphy, the king of witty and dry sarcasm, this class is the simplest writing intensive course ever brought to Williams. "Writing intensive" really means, one page (double spaced!) response to the weekly reading. By "response" I mean, how did you feel? Did you like it? The biggest paper is a 3-5pager. Only thing is you can't miss more than 2 classes. But you can easily get by without reading a thing.

On the other hand, though English 115 isn't a "difficult" class it shouldn't be scoffed at. There's over 20 pages of graded writing (besides the responses) and Murphy isn't such an easy grader.
07ngshttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Where_students_live,_2006-2007&diff=9575Where students live, 2006-20072006-04-13T07:41:42Z
07ngs: /* Sewall */

Wilbur...
(An unlikely but intriguing possible source for the great resentment towards Wilbur may be the late 19th century serialized novel "Wilbur of Williams", [note: title may need correcting] which can be found in the Williams Archives. It is, naturally, a romance. Jealousy, perhaps?)

I don't know where the story above came from but this is the true story. Once upon a time, there was a Williams student who was named Wilbur, and he sucked. To spread the word about how much Wilbur sucked, his friends took the time during meals to carve reminders for other Williams students on Mission and later Greylock trays. They later became creative outlets for people give other examples of how much Wilbur sucked. Wilbur graduated years ago, but was succeeded by another Wilbur (his brother) who sucked even more. This Wilbur's friends brought the Wilbur Sucks message into the digital age and started the Wilbur Sucks facebook.com group. Everyone is encouraged to join and will receive a Wilbur Sucks nickname upon entry.
I, WILBUR: The Truth Behind the Trays.
I feel I must set the record straight. While well-meaning and reasonably thorough, the previous entry is incorrect at least partially. I write for and represent the group of individuals who began, begat, and beset upon the world the Wilbur Tray Series. At its pinnacle, the Series exceeded about 150 Trays and up to almost 20 people were involved in the creative process surrounding the manufacture of each Tray. We knew Wilbur. We were his roommates, his teammates, his friends. To begin with, Wilbur did not suck in many aspects of life. He worked hard at school and had, in my humble opinion, a solid GPA. He was a fast and strong lacrosse player, he dated a pretty, smart, athletic girl, and it’s rumored that he fucked DeRosa’s girlfriend. Of course, this is a highly simplified and generic view of Wilbur. In truth, he worked too hard and his scholastic diligence often caused him to miss nights of beirut and general tomfoolery. His lacrosse game relied upon his quick first step and he was oft-injured after his stellar junior year. His girlfriend throughout college was terrified of us and we substantiated rumors that Wilbur had cut her tongue out, eradicating her power of speech. Please forgive my candid tone. Wilbur was, is, our friend. He once drank a bottle of gin and insisted we shoot him point blank in the chest with a pellet gun, a request we obliged more than a few times. However, he also missed the amHerst game his senior year because he had to take the MCATs and would not reschedule them. It was also famed coach Renzie Lamb’s final home game. We won despite the absence of Wilbur’s power sweep and played amHerst again the following day in the first round of the playoffs. Back from his MCATs and freshly rested, Wilbur made it to the Herst to help us out with the speed we needed. We lost by 2 goals. Poor Wilbur, he will read this. However, he is emotionless. He has no pity, no remorse. It is what prompted his nickname: The Automaton.

When we were sophomores, we lived in Mission Park. Dennett, 4th floor, to
be exact. This was in ‘01-’02, prior to the renovations that made that cinder block a desirable place to live. We were often bored, cooped up in our hallway, with its firedoors and dull lighting. We had no common room. For the most part, we amused ourselves by imbibing inappropriate amounts of Fleischman’s gin and case after case of our beloved Busch Light and P.B.R. At the time, there were six of us: Bee, The Automaton, Radar, Rack, Kam, and me. I’m Mojo. I don’t recall the date specifically, but it was maybe
mid-way through the first semester. September 11th had numbed us all. A couple of us had just ended long-standing relationships, others had begun new ones. All in all, we were reliant upon one another, as friends and cohabitants, for entertainment and solace both of which often occurred in the form of a mean bender. As I said before, Wilbur was sometimes a serious part of our steam-letting. More often than not, however, it seemed he was not. Living and eating in Mission while our friend was seldom around and
not enthused by our shenanigans prompted us to adopt a mantra: Wilbur Sucks.
We’d be at ‘family dinner’, when all 6 of us would be eating at that infamous, now famous, dining hall. “Where’s Wilbur?â€, someone would ask. “I think he and Kristin had to study and were having dinner at Doddâ€, someone would reply. “Man,†one of us would interject, “Wilbur SUCKS.†Everyone would nod in agreement over their Upscale Pizza or salad bowl.

Please realize, this wasn’t said out of real spite or hatred. He was our friend. But he went above and beyond to piss us right off. So it began. Inspired by the occasional carving we’d see on those oddly-shaped Mission Trays (‘peneTraytion’ was a favorite) Kam and I set to writing “WILBUR SUCKS†into the Trays. Kam’s carving tool of choice was his fork, which he would rinse, in a short ritual, in the remains of his drinking water before scratching his lower-case print into the beige plastic. I carried a Swiss Army knife in my pocket attached to my keys. Its awl provided a precise sharp point with which I etched our legacy in a fine-lined, all-caps print. While Rack often had football practice, he enjoyed long meals and was present for much of our inscribing. Bee and Rade were fully loyal to the cause, brainstorming new ideas and even scratching out the occasional work for the good of our ouevre. So, in Mission it began. White flakes and filings curling from the already scratched Trays as our fingers ached under the pressure we applied to make our mark. We took pride when we’d get our own Trays at meals. We would reach for one of the stacks and flip the Tray over eagerly, anticipating a rare find like the elusive XVI or one of the original unnumbereds. Often times, right out of the wash, the marks were hard to read until the Tray dried. This was especially true of my narrower grooves. However, what we truly loved, what got us beaming from deepinside, was waiting in line for a new batch of chicken fingers to emerge from the scullery and hearing groups of friend around us delight in their finds.

“Hey, Vlad, I got one of those Wilbur Trays!â€

“That’s great, Jeb, I got number twelve. Who is this poor bastard?â€

“I don’t know, Vladdy, but apparently he sucks, huh?â€

“Yup.â€

And so our days were brightened.

All in all, we don’t know exactly how many Wilbur Trays we finished that year and I was sidelined from my work for 6 weeks with a broken right index finger, my carving finger, but our estimates range from about 85-100. We started with just “Wilbur Sucksâ€. Over and over, we etched these letters with as much variety as we could muster, with the hopes of covering every piece of flat serving plastic we could get our defacingly creative mitts on. We were unknowing followers of Haring, Basquiat, and, eventually, the Romans. We started to want to catalogue our history, numbering the Trays from the numeral I. Each was different and we were sure to pass on to one another which we made so we’d know which consecutive number to carve at our next earliest convenience. The simple beginnings morphed into limited edition Trays such as the infamous “Seventeen Lambda†so named for the slip of the fork which caused a lambda-esque mark. These were the Limited Edition Mission Trays:

XVIIλ (the infamous seventeen-lambda)

Upon the completion of sophomore year, and the final realization that we’d made it out of Mission alive, we left our Trays behind us, but with the knowledge that Wilbur’s little brother would be joining us the following fall. We also knew that the chances of his living in Mission would be great and that his mates and he would be reminded, daily, about his unfortunate genetic malady.

Junior year saw me off to Melbourne, Australia, away from the friends and co-artists with whom I’d lived in such close proximity. I missed a whole football season and Rack’s shaved head. My return coincided with Kam’s month-long departure for the duration of Winter Study. My artistic soul pined for his return. However, I found another interesting lot of people. Men I knew from the previous two years, people like The Dog and Gregor, who now lived with Radar and Rack placing them closer to me and to my heart. Gregor’s ascerbic humor and outlook on life provided a solid sounding board for The Dog’s anger over the “Girlfriend incident. Coupled with the usual spark from Radar and the sage judgement from Rack, this was a veritable breeding ground for new Wilbur insults. I was also now living with Goose, whose objective disgust of Wilbur was helpful in balancing our strong bias, as well as Kam, Bee, and of course, the Robot himself, as well as a handful of others: Doc, whose bizarre, no-holds-barred razzing meshed seamlessly with the work of Deaner, Blakely, and more. It was upon Kam’s return that our now enlarged force set to work bouncing ideas off of one another like a New York City taxi passenger against the door frame. We decided that the Wilbur legend must persist in the red brick confines of Greylock Dining Hall. So it was. We decided to put aside our sophomoric yet accurate decree and focus on slightly more pithy, witty, timely, and thought-provoking Trays. Ideas were suggested, shot down, modified until they evolved into the Greylock series. Here is what we recall, in no particular order:
It was our hope, after all our effort, that we would one day be able to reclaim the Trays we had defaced in the name of art and information dispersal. However, upon inquiry into the matter before a Greylock meal during my senior year, I learned that Wilbur Trays were being systematically destroyed by the Dining Hall Staff and Services so as to prevent futher “vandalizing†by the unknown assailants of the beige plastic. I was crushed. Our Warholian workshop of Wilbur wailing was wasted. I sometimes wonder about the definitions of art. Part of my Williams number-one-liberal-arts-school-education focused on that very topic. If it once was, but is no longer, is it art? Is the concept itself art? Without the originals, is it art? Yes, yes. A thousand times, yes.
Cult of Tom
* Cult of Tom
* Cult of <s>Tom</s> Tom
* Cult of <s>Tom</s> <s>Tom</s> Tom
:and so on . . .

The Cult of Tom story orginated in 2000 when Tom Fleming ('00) and Jeff Grant ('00) were talking to each other and realized that people would wear pretty much any free T-shirt. Thus, Tom decided he could start his own cult merely by printing up shirts that said "Cult of Tom" and distributing them. The only rule for the Cult of Tom was that you must wear the T-shirt.

Then, Tom asked everybody with the shirt to wear it and come to his thesis defense to ask questions (perhaps silly questions or pre-arranged really intelligent ones). It was afterwards that "Cult of Tom" began being scratched onto Driscoll trays.

This is where the story diverges. Some say that Tom Stackpole ('01) got jealous and scratched out the orignal Tom and put his own name in. Others say that a friend of Tom's started the corrections, and thereby created a new Cult of Tom (Stackpole). At any rate, the original Cult of Tom supporters were angry, and scratched out the new Tom and replaced it with the old Tom. As a result, the system of odd-even number of Toms was created. An odd number of Toms meant Tom Fleming, and even numbers were Tom Stackpole.
Sledding trays
Trays that have been stolen and used as sleds often have shallow or deep grooves in the bottom, running parallel to the long axis of the tray. This is courtesy of the rocks buried underneath the snow that Williams students sled on. Rocks: not your ordinary tray carvers.
07ngshttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Campus_DJ%27s&diff=7459Campus DJ's2006-02-18T22:09:10Z
07ngs:

This wiki helps students plan their co-op picks. It does this by allowing students with lower lottery numbers to publicize their group size and house preferences. This, is turn, allows students with higher lottery numbers to plan accordingly. Groups might also be inspired, given what they can learn from this wiki, to coordinate or negotiate living arrangements within specific houses. In order to help make this wiki successful, co-op draw participants should edit it. Please insert your group's size, names, and preferences.

The names are helpful, not just because they make coordination possible, but because accountability is part of the way of the Eph. However, there's a way to identify even those who don't provide their name: the Page History tab reveals the names of everyone who edits this page.

In order to increase the likelihood that housemates from different groups will get along, you're encouraged to describe the social environment that your group envisions. However, when doing so, you're discouraged from employing sly intimidation tactics disguised as straightforwardness in an attempt to scare others away from your favorite house. Such tactics are decidedly not the way of the Eph.

Some advice from a current co-op inhabitant:
Relax. It will all work out. No matter where you and your friends live, you will have an amazing senior year. Oh, and if you are shopping around to decide which co-op you want, please make your visits only at a reasonable hour.

In order to help make this wiki successful, students participating in the co-op draw should edit it.

However, when doing so, you're discouraged from employing sly intimidation tactics under the guise of straightforwardness in an attempt to scare others away from your favorite house. Such tactics are decidedly not the way of the Eph. (Speaking of which, could group #3 identify themselves?)

Some advice from a current co-op inhabitant:
Relax. It will all work out. No matter where you and your friends live, you will have an amazing senior year. Oh, and if you are shopping around to decide which co-op you want, please make your visits only at a reasonable hour.

This page attempts to provide a mechanism for students to coordinate their co-op picks in 2006. Basic idea is that people with high picks can let others know where they intend to pick so that lower ranked students can focus their energies accordingly. Groups may also try to coordinate on specific houses. Initial idea due to Thomas Kindred. Please edit this page by inserting your group (and likely selection) at the appropriate spot.

People should feel free to add notes about their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the house in order to increase the likelihood that housemates from different pick groups will get along. Note also that the page history tab below provides information on at least one likely pick group member. Sure would be nice, though , if names were provided by all. Honesty and openness is the way of the Eph.

Hopefully, sly intimidation tactics under the guise of straightforwardness are not the ways of the Eph. Seriously you guys, be greatful you got a high Co-Op pick, don't whine or try to weasle your way into the one you deem "the best" by scaring people out of picking into it. Take advice from a current Co-Op inhabitant, it will all work out--you will have amazing senior years with your friends no matter what house you live in. (Oh, and if you are going to visit us, please do so at a reasonable hour).
# 6 WE ARE DESPERATE for LAMBERT, MILHAM, or DOUGHTY. These have always been really fun PARTY spots. We will be really disappointed if people who dont want to throw parties live in big traditionally "party houses." Truthfully, we think all the co-ops are equally nice (room size, clean, etc.) for different reasons. The co-ops that we listed are traditionally the party houses because of the way they are set up (the large central rooms) and we really want to be able to throw parties for a lot of people so everyone on campus can enjoy them, but we can't do this with all the co-ops. We really hope to get one of these three just because the way the co-ops are set up fit with our interests, and a lot of the student body's interests, for senior year. Please reconsider your interests and what you want your senior year to be like. Thanks, see you tomorrow night (Ali Beswick, Kate WHipple, Cathleen Clark, Meghan Guinne, Pilar, and Rebecca)
On this page we shout those instances of this brand of triumph that we are proud to call our own. We keep in mind the need for discretion as we write, lest our champions face persecution for their actions or critical points of access become barred to us.

Pranks represent an epehemeral hole in the fabric of civilization, whose end since the beginning of time has been to create law and order to protect the weak from the strong. A prank is a fleeting triumph of one or a few clever, brutish, or nutty individuals over a naive target, perhaps a whole community, whose faith in the mundane makes prime grist for levity.

But though these characteristics are what make a prank special, celebrated, so also are why a tension has always and must forever exist between between pranksters and authoritarians, between standards of common decency and whispered adulation of violations of those standards. It is a strife as old as Rome and the Visigoths, as Athens and Sparta, as the first time man discovered how to laugh at his fellow man.
Pranks I/Onvolving Computers
She's only programmed to be very nice
But she's as cold as ice
Whenever I get too near
-- Yours Truly 2095, Electric Light Orchestra

* In the middle of October, Brian Hirshman '06 noticed that Johannes Pulst-Korenberg '06 was away from his keyboard. Brian deftly set Johannes's keyboard layout to Dvorak, which is different then the standard QWERTY layout that most people use. Johannes quickly found that his keystroke input was more or less unusable, and demanded that Brian change it back. Johannes vowed revenge, and got some on Halloween (see Pranks involving rooms).

* Williams classic: Many Berkshire Symphony Orchestra parties ended with the host's desktop background set to a tiled image of someone's WSO Facebook picture, guaranteeing confusion when they woke the next morning.

* One time freshman year, Mark Alexander Kelly Matthews '07 left his computer unattended. This was a big mistake. He returned to find Creed playing on a loop on his computer loud enough that his entire entry could hear it. It was his fault for having a Creed song in the first place.

* The sound scheme on a computer can easily be altered so that a a relatively uncommon event (like Windows Critical Stop) or excruciatingly common event (like Menu Open) will be accompanied by a prerecorded sound, preferable one of distinct embarassment.

* Go into Microsoft Word and change the auto correct options. For example, have word auto correct every time it says the word "the" to the phrase "I am the spawn of Satan!" or something to that effect.

* I have only gotten this trick to work on the corner desks in sawyer: if you have a mouse and are sitting next to someone who is working without a mouse at their laptop, connect your mouse to their computer when they get up. it will be quite confusing for them if you can move the mouse in close to, but not quite the direction they are trying to go on their screen

* In December of 2005, Brian Hirshman '06 had to turn in a background chapter of his thesis to computer science professor Duane Bailey. Brian used the random computer science paper generator in order to do so. Good times ensued.

Pranks Involving Rooms
Nothing reminds a mark of the fragility of existence like a well-placed kick in the crib.

* At the beginning of this school year, Brian Hirshman '06 and suitemate Johannes Pulst-Korenberg '06 decided to mirror-image the room of their fellow suitemate Dan Burns '06. Everything that was on the left side of Dan's room was moved to the right side, and even the books on his bookcase were placed in reverse order. Burns decided that it was too much trouble to switch everything back, and his room has remained in the mirror-image configuration ever since.

* Over Halloween night, Dan Burns '06 struck back with a vengeance. He turned Brian's room literally upside down. He took the bed and turned that upside down. He took the bookcase and turned that upside down, then proceeded to take the books on the bookcase upside down. He turned Brian's desk upside down, and everything that was sitting on top of it upside down. To top it off, he even went into Brian's closet and turned Brian's clothes upside down, tying shirts to the hangers to make sure that they would stay upside down until Brian returned.

* Cover the outside of someone's doorframe with newspaper, duct tape, TP, etc. Or stretch a piece of clear packing tape, sticky side in, across the doorframe at chest level. Wait for the victim to wake up and try to leave their room. If newspaper or some other continuous material (i.e. dozens of stretched facebook images of a person feared by the victim) is used to cover the doorframe, the intervening space between the paper and door can be filled with small objects that will spill into the room when the door is opened (note: particularly effective if you happen to unearth your victim's secret cotton ball phobia). This technique was used to great effect by Lisa Lindeke '06 against Esa Seegulam '06 in his freshman year.

* During the Winter Study of 2003, Robert Hahn '05 traveled to the remote Galapagos Islands, leaving his key in the care of trusted suitemate Matthew Spencer '05. Teaming up with nearby friends Justin Brown and Jenny Simons '05, these three filled the room floor to ceiling with red balloons to await. They were sure to make their move only the day before Robert's return, so that minimal deflation would occur before he arrived to appreciate it.

* Steal all of someone's clothes except for their tuxedo and then send them on a campus-wide treasure hunt to locate said clothes, creatively prolonging said treasure hunt so that the victim is forced to wear said tuxedo to breakfast the next morning. For more information, contact Lisetta Shah '06 or Eric Cheung '06.

* Cover the room's floor with dixie cups filled to the brim with water. Leave just enough space for the door to open, but nothing else. The victim will have to remove the cups one by one.

* Wrap every single item in saran wrap. Or aluminum foil. Or wrapping paper. Just like Christmas morning.

Seasonal Pranks
A truly good prank is always in season. You don't wait for St. Paddy's Day to drink Guinness, do you?

* The Great Pumpkin Steal: During Halloween 2005, a giant pumpkin was placed in each dining hall, each weighing over 150 pounds and over a yard in diameter. Several students successfully stole one of these pumpkins out of Driscoll Dining Hall one evening without the dining staff noticing. The pumpkin was found several hours later in the back of one of the students' cars. While they were unable to place the pumpkin on top of Schow, as was planned, they did manage to amaze Security with their ingenuity and skill. Remarked Dave Boyer, "That's the funniest thing I've ever seen. Don't do it again." The editors note that, technically, the pumpkin was within the "one piece of fruit" limit for dining hall take-out.

* Every fall, Dining Services serves an excellent Harvest Dinner, at which the most anticipated and beloved dish is surely the lobster. Though a ticket system attempts to ensure that each student can get only one lobster, in 2002 a few Deviant mischief-makers managed to collect enough from helpful friends to arrange a little tableau at the Log, where a number of noise complaints had been called in earlier that semester. Four lobsters were posed playing a hand of poker, and others were set up playing beer pong (using apple juice in the cups, so as not to break open container rules =) ). The perpetrators called in two noise complaints from public phones, using the names "Red Skelton" and "Rod Stewart." This would have been the end of the story, except that Security looked up the name "Stewart" in the student directory and headed over to Lehman, where they woke up a very confused freshman named Robin Stewart and interrogated him until they understood that he had absolutely nothing to do with the prank.

Pranks of Rumor and Legend
Did they happen? We'd like to think so, but though stories of the below pranks circulate by the proverbial water coolers, they may be actual triumphs of students, or mere sources of inspiration for future triumphs.

* This prank happened at a high school far away from here, but it is perfect for a country school like Williams. As a senior prank, students released three chickens on school grounds, each wearing a little shirt with a number on it. The numbers were 1, 2, and 4. The rest of the day involved the administrators and facilities people frantically searching every corner of the school, dismantling heating ducts and cooling vents, in a search for the elusive (and nonexistant) chicken number 3.

*This prank happened at the Harvard Football field a couple years ago. Taking a page from the playbook of behavioral psychologist Pavlov, an MIT student spent one summer training hundreds of pigeons to flock to the Harvard field whever they heard a referee's whistle. The student did this by going to the field every day to blow a whistle as he scattered bird seed all over the field. Eventually, just like Pavlov's dogs, the pigeons learned to associate the sound of the whistle with the promise of food. When Harvard's football team eventually came back to train during the fall season, they found that just one whistle-blow would cause hundreds of pigeons to descend onto the field, making the field unplayable.
07ngshttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=The_logic_behind_road_numbers&diff=6861The logic behind road numbers2006-01-23T21:49:17Z
07ngs:

Roads that circumscribe major metropolitan areas have three digits. Thus, 495 circumscribes the Boston area.

Roads that run north/south have odd numbers. Thus, 95 runs from Florida to Canada.

Roads that run east/west have even numbers. Thus, Route 2 runs from Cambridge, out through Williamstown, and beyond. I-40 runs from Wilmington, NC, to somewhere way out west, past Texas. And Highway/Route 66 is perhaps the most famous example of an American east/west road.

It also helps to know that the numbers mostly increase from west to east and south to north (for interstate highways at least).
Major roads that circumscribe a city have three digits. Thus, 495 circumscribes Boston.

The route/highway argument is similar to the pop/soda argument, in that it bepeaks differences in regional dialects. But, it's a little more nuanced because it's less of an argument than a semantic difference.

On parts of the East Coast, people call highways "routes," but only in a specific circumstance. They might call it "Route 495," but then they will refer to "Route 495" as a "highway" when saying something like, "I live just a few miles from the highway." Thus, unlike the pop/soda argument, the East Coasters agree with the West Coasters on what the thing itself should be called—"highway." It's just that when some East Coasters refer to one of these highways by its number, they say "Route ___."
In response to the comment above—"everyone on the East Coast uses 'route' rather than 'highway'"—several things should be noted.

1. The East Coast of the United States is not homogenous. What people do in Massachussetts is not necessarily the same as what people do in Georgia. Just because people from MA call it "Route 2" doesn't mean that everyone else on the East Coast calls it "Route 2." Be wary of assuming that everything you observe in Williamstown is true of the entire East Coast.

2. Those of us in MA who do call highways "routes" do so in very particular circumstances. We might call it "Route 495," but we'll also refer to Route 495 as a "highway" when saying something like, "I live just a few miles from the highway." This is a little more nuanced than the pop/soda argument.

3. It's worth noting the logic behind highway and road numbers, because it can give you a clue about where they go. A highway is assigned 3 digits if it circumscribes a major metropolitan area. That's why the highway that circumscribes Boston is 495. A road/highway that runs north/south is assigned an odd number. Thus, the highway that runs from Montreal all the way down the east coast to Florida is numbered 95. A road/highway that runs east/west is assigned an even number. Thus, the one that runs west from downtown Boston all the way out through Williamstown (and beyond) is numbered 2. Similarly, anyone who's travelling from one coast to the other might drive on the famed Highway/Route 66, which also runs east/west. So, if you're ever completely lost, but you know the general direction that you want to travel, you can sort of navigate by the road/highway number. Sort of.
