Episodic Behavior:

In contrast to repetitive self-mutilation, episodic self-mutilation is often regarded as a symptom or feature of another mental illness. Furthermore, in repetitive self-mutilation, the patient tends to identify with a certain type of self mutilation, defining himself as a "cutter" or "burner". Patients who exhibit episodic self-mutilating behavior do not define themselves as self-mutilators.

Most Common Behaviors:

-Skin Cutting
-Skin Burning
-Needle sticking
-Bone Breaking
-Interference with wound healing (i.e. picking at scabs)

Associated with the following mental illnesses:

-Borderline Personality Disorder
-Histrionic and Antisocial Personality Disorders
-Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
-Dissociative Disorders
-Eating Disorders
