Important regional manufacturing affiliates of industry in North Adams, especially during the years of the Arnold Print Works existence, included textile plants in Adams (3), Blackinton (2), North Pownal, VT (4), and Williamstown. A discussion of the ownership and status of the Arnold Print Works affiliates may be found in Carin Cole's thesis study of Houghton.
Adams industries have included woolen manufacturers, mineral extraction, and a variety of others. Details on nineteenth century factories may be found first in the ANADEX, which then gives references to other works which often lack indices and are too delicate to be subjected to unnecessary wear and tear.
Blackinton (now incorporated into the City of North Adams) was home to the massive woolen mill of North Adams entrepreneur Sanford Blackinton. For details, look to the thesis and corresponding journal article by Elizabeth Baker.
North Pownal in Vermont was home to a subsidiary of the Arnold Print Works, the North Pownal Manufacturing Company-- see the Cole thesis for details.
Williamstown was home to Houghton subsidiary the Williamstown Manufacturing Company. In addition to Carin Cole's thesis, theses by fellow Williams alums Dan Powell and Theodore Ruger also shed light onto the similarity and differences between industrial development and labor relations in Williamstown and those in North Adams.
