Track '03 Races

Recap: 702.5 mi, 50 mi hard, 109 runs. Another tough season, only ran one decent race, and spent the entire season trying to get healthy and never really got over what was giving me trouble. At the end, I didn't really feel like I was missing out by taking time off because running had just become too frustrating. Going to take time off to get healthy for the summer, I have a lot to make up for next year, really hope that it will be a good one that I'm proud of. Sometimes, you just have to roll with the punches.
Week of 4/7/03

Week: 16.5 mi, 2 mi hard, 3 runs. Had to make the tough decision after Tuesday's rough workout, and decided that it was better to just let things go and take some time off. Glad that spring finally came, Monday and Tuesday weren't fun but was glad to get at least one nice weather run in before calling it quits. Going to take at least a month off, probably more (all the way through the end of school), and take stock again then. It's been an interesting year.

Sunday 4/13/03: Rest
Per Zach's request, I'll say a word about the toga party last night. I thought it was pretty lame, the first track party I've been to where people left before midnight to go to other parties (myself included). Armstrong basement is just not a fun place in my opinion. However the rendition of "Louie Louie" was great, nothing like a little Animal House to get a party going. A nice day out today, spent it sleeping in and then doing work.

Saturday 4/12/03: Rest
Spent all day at the meet, for Williams Relays the weather was excellent, overcast in the morning and then clearing into a beautiful day. Was taking splits for all the distance races, then took part in the Skull Toss at the end, doing a solid leg for the junior squad. Glad that spring is finally here.

Friday 4/11/03: Rest
After a lot of thought about it I decided today that I'm going to take the rest of the outdoor season off. It was a hard decision to make as I really love running outdoor track, but not being in great shape and having been sick a lot I think its for the best to rest up and get healthy for next year. I really think that training through illness has made me more suceptible to getting sick, and having lots of work and high blood pressure has made things worse. So I'm going to take off at least a month, maybe more, then see how I'm feeling and go from there. It's been an interesting year, very frustrating at times, and I'd rather not try and run 2 more races when I think that resting instead would be beneficial.

Thursday 4/10/03: 3 mi
Felt better today so I ran Gale plus a little with Geoff for a long 3 mi. Not running that fast for most of it, picked it up a little at the end. Nice weather out so it was good to run, but I'm still not sure about this weekend, I'll decide on Saturday.

Wednesday 4/9/03: Rest
Not surprisingly, I woke up feeling awful today and am definetly sick again. Spent the afternoon sleeping and was not in any kind of shape to run. May have been the cause of yesterday's debacle, but also some mysterious illness could be why I have been sick often lately. This sucks.

Tuesday 4/8/03: 7.5 mi, 2 mi hard
Petersburg pass workout. Warmed up about 2.5-2.75 mi, hit up the bathroom, then ran 6 min at 10k effort uphill, 3 min rest, 6 min tempo uphill, then canned it because I was feeling absolutely miserable like I have been all year. Hopped in the van with Pete for a minute then ran back down Bee Hill. The worst I've felt in quite a while, when the women were pulling away from me on the second rep I knew that something was wrong again. Might just be the lingering bug from last week or the mysterious illness, time will tell. Frustrating day.

Monday 4/7/03: 6 mi
Started off Winter Study (oops I mean the last 6 weeks of school!) with Blair Short from Hopkins, 41 min for about 6 mi. Really didn't want to be wearing pants and a hat, there was a bit of snow at the end on Route 2 and Blair was pretty muddy, but otherwise a decent run. Saw Karl heading back home on my way out, he ran along with me for a minute and we chatted, then I ran alone the rest of the way. Was supposed to snow more today but it didn't, so that's at least something.

Week of 3/31/03

Week: 33.5 mi, 6.5 mi hard, 6 runs. Not a great week due to illness, spring break just isn't the same if you're trying to get healthy. Got in one race and had fun with it which is the most important thing, we'll see what other exciting races I can pull out in the last 2 meets of the year.

Sunday 4/6/03: Rest
Flying back to school and still not feeling recovered from yesterday so took today off. I woke up with a sore throat again, I thought I had the sickness beat. Snow on the ground back at school, will be tough to get used to again after 2 weeks in milder climates.

Saturday 4/5/03: 5 mi, 1.25 mi hard
Raced a 1500 at the Duke/NC Central Invite, my first one in a long time for a 4:31.78. Not a great time but nice to be racing again, read more on the
races page. Legs really painful on the cooldown, had to walk some of it to loosen up my legs. Not a great one but I'll take it.

Friday 4/4/03: 3 mi
Easy premeet run at NC Central before the steeple this morning, didn't run as much as I would have liked as my back was hurting towards the end. Did 4 striders at the end and my legs felt pretty good, didn't want to make the back worse at this point so just called it a day. Some good races today, most notably Dusty in his fastest 5k since college.

Thursday 4/3/03: 6 mi
6 mi trail run with Garvin, took a little long at 46 min but some sections of trail were rough and slowed us down. Going at a nice easy pace to beat the heat and recover from the last 2 days, really nice place to run.

Wednesday 4/2/03: 8 mi, 2.25 mi hard
Track workout at NC State, warmed up for 2 mi, did some drills and strides, then ran 2 sets of 800-400-400 at 3k pace with 2 min, 1 min between reps and 4 min between sets. Splits were 2:33, 75, 74, 2:30, 73, 74. Pace was more of a "try and stay close to Hannan" pace than 3k, but running faster at least made me feel like I accomplished a little more. Cooled down for 8 mi total, feeling better today and it was warm out too.

Tuesday 4/1/03: 8 mi, 3 mi hard
Health was better today and after a 2 mi warm-up felt like throwing in some cruises so cruised 3x6 min. Running along trails in a different part of the Duke Forest, great running and it was a little warmer today than yesterday. Still feeling the illness some throughout but it was nice to get in a more substantial run.

Monday 3/31/03: 3.5 mi
Feeling a bit under the weather today so I just ran easy for 26 min in the Duke Forest, some really nice trails for running. Not a great way to be spending spring break but not much I can do about it. A little chilly out, not what I was expecting for spring break either.

Week of 3/24/03

Week: 54 mi, 7 mi hard, 7 runs. A good week of training, got in 2 workouts and a solid long run. Starting to get back into shape, after another week or two I should be much better off. Just need to keep up the consistent running.

Sunday 3/30/03: Rest
After running 7 days in a row, took a rest day to allow my legs to recover. Spent all day flying back to North Carolina to join the team after a good week in California.

Saturday 3/29/03: 11 mi
Did my long run in the hills, Powerline-Yellow Box in 79 min, took a little longer than usual because I ran the first couple of miles a little slow to loosen up my legs from yesterday. Hills were difficult as always, but I didn't have to stop and catch my breath as often as I usually do, so that was good. Heading out to North Carolina tomorrow to resume training with the team.

Friday 3/28/03: 9 mi, 2.75 mi hard
Warmed up 2.5 mi, did drills and strides, then ran 1600-1600-800 at 5k pace with equal recovery. Ran 5:21, 5:24, 2:47, wanted to do another mile for the third rep but I was just not feeling it today, it was really windy and I was just dead. Ran 2.5 mi on the cooldown for 9 mi total, not a great workout. The new CHS track is really nice except for the wind there today, so that was exciting, saw Coach V and Coach Ede there and said hi.

Thursday 3/27/03: 8.5 mi
Ran for 59 min on the bluff at Torrey Pines, a beautiful day out just as it was when I did this run a year ago with the team. Felt alright, still a little tired from yesterday but got in a good run. I wasn't sure if the tide was too high to run along the beach (my knowledge of the tides from Physics 411T wasn't of much help) so ran up the road to the top and tooled around up there for a while with some great ocean views.

Wednesday 3/26/03: 6 mi
Ran with Engler for 42 min easy, a good 6 mi loop on some horse trails and around a golf course. A little worn out from playing golf today (Dr. Bob had a great round but I had lots of rust in my swing), but still a good run, relaxed and at a reasonable pace.

Tuesday 3/25/03: AM 9 mi, 4.25 mi hard, PM 4 mi
Ran 5-12.5-7.5 min tempo on my tempo loop in the colleges, was going to do 5-15-5 but a bathroom break forced me to change things a little. A good workout, held consistent pace throughout, and at the end I even opened it up a little. Feel like the base is coming back nicely. In the afternoon, ran 4 mi easy with Engler down in San Diego, a nice easy run.

Monday 3/24/03: 6.5 mi
Ran Webb Longhill plus the dam in 46 min. Misty and much cooler than yesterday, great weather for running. A good recovery run, I could feel yesterday in my legs a little but they loosened up. Starting to get conditioning back, my average HR was 148 today, lower than it has been.

Week of 3/17/03

Week: 36 mi, 2 mi hard, 5 runs. A good week of getting my legs used to running again. I'm not in shape yet but now that my legs can handle it again it should be faster getting back into it. Since I'm on break, I should be able to increase the mileage fairly quickly as I can rest up plenty. Looking forward to a week of training at home then in North Carolina.

Sunday 3/23/03: 10 mi
Did a long run up in the hills, ran Yellow Box-Red Brick in 72 min. Definetly not in great shape, the hills were killing me, but I did this run faster than I did this summer, so good news there. Spring has definetly arrived in the foothills, everything was green and blooming and absolutely gorgeous. A little warm but a nice breeze picked up midway through, making the rolling hills on the backside of Yellow Box even nicer than they already were. Great day to start off spring break.

Saturday 3/22/03: Rest
Spent all day flying home, almost missed a flight because they had to change two tires on a plane, ended up running through the Raleigh airport to barely make my next flight. 17 hours of travel and 4 plane flights today, but its nice to be home.

Friday 3/21/03: 8.5 mi, 2 mi hard
Wasn't sure if I wanted to do a track workout today but it was nice out and I figured since it is only a few weeks until I want to be racing well I should get on it. Ran cemetary to warm up and did some drills and accelerations on the track. For the workout ran 300-600-1000-1200 at 3k pace for the shorter intervals and 5k pace for the longer intervals. Felt pretty good in general, splits were 57, 1:58, 3:20, 4:01, pretty good pacing and I actually felt like I could have gone a little faster which surprised me. Didn't want to jump into fast running too quickly so ended it from there with a Gale cooldown for a good 8.5 mi day. Heading home for a week tomorrow, should be good to be back in Claremont for a little bit. SPRING BREAK WHUAAAA!!

Thursday 3/20/03: 4 mi
Ran a short 4 easy by myself, Gale plus. Was watching tournament games all afternoon then finally got myself to run, I was a little sore from yesterday's run but the run loosened up my legs. Raining and kind of windy, not great weather but I'm not complaining about the last few days we've had.

Wednesday 3/19/03: 7.5 mi
Feeling a lot better today, ran Blair-Luce plus Knolls with Winkler and part of it with Hannan. Held a good pace throughout the run, 50 min and probably ran a little short of 7.5 mi. Was actually feeling really good for much of the run, a little bit of trouble with a bit of a side stitch but worked through it ok. Average HR was 160, a little higher at times than I would have liked but in general it was nice to do a solid run at a good pace.

Tuesday 3/18/03: Rest
Was going to do Petersburg tempo hills today but on the warm-up had a nasty stomache ache that made running miserable so only ran a mile and called it quits. Hit up the bathroom at the Taconic but that didn't make things any better. I guess its ok because I was pretty sore as it was and a day off wouldn't hurt, but sucks that I wasn't feeling well.

Monday 3/17/03: 6 mi
Gorgeous outside today, 65 degrees and sunny. Ran Hopkins-Bridle Path plus West Main and Knolls for a long 6 in 46 min. The trails were still covered with snow so the going was slow in a few places especially on the Bridle path and my feet got a little soaked when I punched through into the creek. Other than that, it was great to be running in shorts and a t-shirt and to be off the roads. One more day then spring break unofficially begins.

Week of 3/10/03

Week: 17.5 mi, 0 mi hard, 3 runs. Glad to end the week on a positive note after basically taking a week off. Sure, being out of shape sucks, but it's a lot easier to get into shape then figure out what is causing mysterious illnesses. At this point I would conclude that it was just a vicious cycle of blood pressure and stress that did me in unless things don't continue to improve. From here, next week is a get the legs used to running week, followed by 3 solid weeks of training over spring break and the week after.

Sunday 3/16/03: 8.5 mi
Ran Woodcock in 62 min, felt about the same as yesterday. As out of shape long runs go, this one wasn't bad. Absolutely gorgeous outside, 55 degrees and it was wonderful to be out running. Definetly felt out of shape when the Condor blew by me on route 7 coming back to campus, that kid is going to do great things outdoors.

Saturday 3/15/03: 6 mi
Ran Blair-Short starting and ending at Hopkins for about 6 mi. Weather was great, wore shorts and it was fine. Felt ok, but it was more of an "I'm not in shape yet" than "I feel like ass," which seemed promising to me. The legs weren't heavy but I did feel pretty winded going up the hills. Seems like this is a problem that I know how to fix (running every day) rather than the trouble I've been having, so I was optimistic. Nescacs are 6 weeks from today, we'll see what I can pull out by then

Friday 3/14/03: Rest
Rested for one more day, I think I'm starting to feel better which is good news. Going to start building into training again tomorrow, especially if the weather is nice like its supposed to be. I have a rough work week coming up (I guess so does everyone else though) so I certainly need to hit the books this weekend.

Thursday 3/13/03: Rest
Took yet another day off. Saw the doctor today, my blood pressure was sky high again so put me on a higher dose of the medication. As for the fatigue, I ran out of blood pressure medication a few days before I started feeling bad, and since my blood pressure was high throughout the fall and I hadn't been feeling well that seemed to be the most logical explaination for this funk. So the jury is out on this one until the new meds kick in, if I'm still not feeling well after taking these for a while then we'll consider other possibilities. Got a few inches of snow today so that contributed to me not running, as well as the fact that I ate too many Knock You Nakeds at lunch.

Wednesday 3/12/03: Rest
Took another day off, I didn't particularly feel like running today. Not feeling any better but not any worse, I guess that's not good but it isn't horrible either. Weather was pretty nice today so that was good, but we're supposed to get snow tomorrow. Spring really needs to make up its mind and get here already.

Tuesday 3/11/03: 3 mi
Not a great day. Talked with Pete about my troubles before I ran, he certainly thought that seeing a doctor was a good idea and gave me a little assurance that he had trouble like I did once back in the day and recovered from it ok. After managed to make it around Gale and just wasn't feeling good at all, ran into Magid towards the end and he promptly destroyed me on his every other day 3 miler as he recovers from his stress fracture. Fortunately the dinner conversation was great tonight which cheered me up, it always reminds me how great this team is.

Monday 3/10/03: Rest
Same old story, still not feeling great so rested today. Also had cold weather to deal with, this weather is really getting annoying. As Dusty reminded me today, nothing to do but keep putting one foot in front of the other and deal with this.

Week of 3/3/03

Week: 28 mi, 0.5 mi hard, 5 runs. Really frustrating when a problem that you thought was over with comes back and makes running tough. I was kind of down towards the end of the week, but doing my best to rest up and come back strong. Curious if this is a physiological problem or just stress related, either way I'm going to be more efficient in doing my work and get more sleep, hope that will help things out.

Sunday 3/9/03: 5 mi
Feeling somewhat better this morning so ran easy for 37 min in Pownal. Still wasn't running great but it did feel good to get out and run. Really windy out so some parts were pretty miserable but other than that the weather was fine. Definetly the best I've felt since Wednesday, so that is promising.

Saturday 3/8/03: Rest
A beautiful day outside but I needed a day off. Felt a little less fatigued today but also want the knee heal. Seeing the doctor this week about my blood pressure so we'll see what he says about the fatigue problem. Talking to my mom last night we both agreed that stress may have a lot to do with both this and the blood pressure. When I went home over break the running was great for a week and my blood pressure was much lower, other than that I've been stressed most of the time with lots of work to do. Once again time will tell, maybe reducing my stress as much as possible will help.

Friday 3/7/03: 3 mi
Ugh. Made it 3 miles today around Gale and then my knee that I slipped and fell on yesterday started acting up, fortunately I didn't have time for much of a run so it wasn't a long walk back to my room. Still some noticeable fatigue but not as bad as the last few days, I think I might need the weekend to recover. Need to stay positive, there's still time to run well outdoors.

Thursday 3/6/03: Rest
Didn't run today for several reasons, among them the snowy weather outside (I slipped on the ice several times today and don't want a replay of the knee injury) and the continuing fatigue, legs did not feel any better today. Just climbing the stairs up to my room makes my legs tired. Once again not sure what to make of this, but I am sure that I don't want a replay of cross country where I train through this just to have a few bad to mediocre races down the line. We'll see what happens.

Wednesday 3/5/03: 8 mi
Legs were feeling dead today, would have done a longer run but just wasn't feeling it. Ran out and back along Northwest Hill for 56 min, fairly mild weather with mist. Seemed kind of lethargic overall and on the hills especially. Legs were a lot like they were throughout the fall, woke up and they were really heavy. Once again I am perplexed, they have been slowly worsening over the last week. Kind of a bummer, they did feel better after running though. Not sure what to make of today.

Tuesday 3/4/03: 8 mi, 0.5 mi hard
Wanted to run this morning but it was still very cold outside so I opted not to, my arch was also still hurting. In the morning though walking around I felt a joint in my foot crack and after that my arch felt fine, so I wasn't concerned about it in the afternoon. Ran Henderson as it warmed up outside, added on some and ran 8x100 strides in the field house afterwards, 56 min of total running. Felt ok, hope I can make up for the colder weather later in the week.

Monday 3/3/03: 4 mi
Really really cold outside today, so I ran for 29 min in the field house. Would have liked to do a little more today to spread out the mileage for the week, but the weather is out of my control. Felt reasonably comfortable, my left arch was a little sore though.

Week of 2/24/03

Week: 64 mi, 2 mi hard, 9 runs. A mixed bag but still a good week of training in general, haven't run this much since the summer. The hamstring injury wasn't too fun and I think it hampered me a little the rest of the week. I did make up for the shortened run due to the injury with a nice double at the end of the week. I was a little short on sleep due to a rough academic week so keeping up with that from here on out will help too. Good volume with 2 good distance runs, didn't get in any tempo but the hill workout was good. Keep plugging away and things will continue to improve.

Sunday 3/2/03: 12 mi
Ah, March in Williamstown. Cold and rainy this morning. Ran from the bottom of the Hopper to its end, then came back and ran out the back of Mt. Hope to route 7 over the snowy trail. From there ran Oblong over Scott Hill back to the start, about 12 mi in 85 min due to the icy roads and snow on the path. Started hailing while I was running out 43 to Oblong which was absolutely miserable, didn't last too long fortunately. My pants were totally waterlogged by the midway point and weighed a ton. A real mental toughness run, and brunch has never tasted as great as today.

Saturday 3/1/03: AM 4 mi, PM 7 mi
Ran Gale plus in the morning for a nice 4 mi shakeout, I was a little sore from yesterday. In the afternoon ran Scott Hill in 51 min, the end was a little tough as I had more trouble with the monster, 3 so far this week isn't a very good number. Felt relaxed and comfortable though, this morning's run was nice on the legs. Guys ran great at Div 1s today, and Chris Garvin is my hero.

Friday 2/28/03: 9 mi, 1.5 mi hard
Warmed up a short 2 out to Bee Hill, did a few drills and Mt. Kenya bounds/strides, and ran 30-60-90-120-90-60-30 sec with half time downhill recovery. Was doing about 5k effort for most of them and feeling fairly strong, not incredibly taxing but good for starting to get back into doing a little quality. Made a pit stop at the Williams Inn before running West Main-Bulkley plus some more for 9 mi of total running. A fairly warm day, nice running weather for this time of year.

Thursday 2/27/03: 7 mi
Ran Blair-Luce backwards tacking on Gale on my way home for a good 7 mi run, 49 min. Ran with Winkler, Mini Neal, and VV for the beginning of the run until they did some cruises which I had no intention of doing. Good recovery day, HR was at a good level most of the run, averaging 143.

Wednesday 2/26/03: 10 mi
Ran Bee-Woodcock-43 in 68 min, a solid distance run. Held a decent pace up the hill, was moving well at the end, and felt good on the whole. The hamstrings were ok, I could feel them a little bit but not too badly, just need to stay away from fast running for a few days here. Wasn't as cold as I thought it was outside so was a little overdressed, not too windy out today so the weather was better than I expected.

Tuesday 2/25/03: AM 4 mi, PM 4 mi, 0.5 mi hard
Ran Gale plus for 29 min in the morning, it was pretty cold and windy out. In the afternoon, warmed up 2.5 mi then made it through about 800m of Cruz strides (10x100m strides with exercises in between) before the hamstrings gave out, did a little more running but it was clear that my hammies were done for the day. Every Cruz workout I've done indoors has been brutal to my hamstrings so I'm never going to make this mistake again, I'll do a different workout instead. Really frustrated, this is the fourth straight week in which something has screwed up my training mid-week. Will do my best to get the hamstrings strong again soon, going to start lifting and stretching them regularly.

Monday 2/24/03: 7 mi
Ran Blair-Luce from and to Hopkins in 49 min, an easy 7 mi. Decent pace throughout, and an average HR of 145. Had quite a bad monster attack but was able to make it to the Mobil station on route 2, got a great reaction from the woman at the register when I asked her for the key. Felt pretty good overall, my legs were a little tired this morning but the run loosened them up.

Week of 2/17/03

Week: 43 mi, 4.25 mi hard, 6 runs. Not quite what I was hoping for the week due to the knee injury, but got in some good runs and I feel ready to start moving up the mileage scale. Weekly tempos and long runs are key now, and I did get in one of each. Hope that I can make myself get my work done in a timely fashion this week as I should be getting more sleep than I have been.

Sunday 2/23/03: 12 mi
Did a long run in the pond area of Pownal. Ran about a 10 mile loop then added on a little less than 2 for a short 12, 79 min. Have some work to do on the hills, was able to maintain a decent pace on the first major uphill but didn't have much in the legs after that. Not too cold out today but was definetly cooling down during the run. A pretty good run but not great, these should get better with more consistency.

Saturday 2/22/03: 5.5 mi
At MIT for Div 3 New Englands cheering/watching/timing, so ran in the rain before the meet started. Ran out and back along the Charles River, the first half on the Cambridge side and the second half on the Boston side. About 39-40 min easy (I accidentally didn't start my watch after getting stopped at a stoplight), legs still a little heavy, but a fun run in the rain when I wasn't getting splashed by cars driving by.

Friday 2/21/03: 8.5 mi
Another gorgeous day, ran in shorts and a long sleeved shirt, no gloves or hat. Didn't want to run on pavement the whole time today so I came up with the (not-so-)brilliant idea to run Shadowbrook. Apparently I thought the foot of snow outside my dorm wouldn't be up on the hill, so it made for an interesting trek up the hill, definetly punched through the snow with most steps, once even up to my upper thigh, and ended up with a foot in the creek too. That aside, it was a wonderful run, the dirt roads weren't as muddy as I thought they would be and felt good on the whole. Added on West Main and Knolls for 60 min of running not counting the walking up the hill for a solid 8.5 mi day.

Thursday 2/20/03: 8 mi, 4.25 mi hard
Warmed up 2 mi out 43 and then ran 25 min of tempo on Scott Hill, adding on West Main at the end plus a little bit more to get 8 mi of running. Tempo felt good through 20 min, the last 5 min were slightly more interesting, my legs were a little heavy today though. Really nice day outside so enjoyed the good weather. Knee felt great, the bump I had on there is gone, so only my shin is bothering me now.

Wednesday 2/19/03: 6 mi
After running a few laps inside with no knee pain, I decided to run today. Ran Blair-Luce and didn't feel my knee at all, 43 min. Running fairly easy most of the time except on the hills which I felt like running harder and got my HR up a little bit. My shin was slightly better than it has been, so these nagging injuries seem to be improving. Iced both the knee and the shin after the run. The cough is still giving me trouble, especially after the run today and when I've been trying to fall asleep, I should get that checked out.

Tuesday 2/18/03: Rest
My knee was feeling better today but to be on the cautious side took today off. I think that I bruised it falling down yesterday so I iced it, nothing to do now but let it heal so I can resume training. This was going to be a recovery week anyways so no reason not to take a day off if I need it.

Monday 2/17/03: 3 mi
Ran North Hoosac from Hopkins with about 2 inches of fresh snow on the ground and right above the bridge on Cole Ave took a bad spill and landed on my knee. Took a minute to walk it off, then tried to resume running and the knee was pretty painful so I walked back to the field house to ice it and blame Garvin for the bad karma he must have given me. First run in almost 2.5 years in which I've had to walk back, not a fun experience with all the snow. Tried running a little bit in the field house but it was clear that it was best for me to rest my knee. We'll see how it is tomorrow, given Garvin's trouble due to his fall I'm in no hurry to rush this back. Ironically I thought about resting today and almost did, oh well nothing I can do about it now.

Week of 2/10/03

Week: 49.5 mi, 0.75 mi hard, 7 runs. Nevermind the number of miles or the lack of any quality, this was the kind of week I have been waiting to have since September, where I didn't struggle through any runs due to a mysterious illness and felt good for the most part every day. 5 weeks until spring break, need to have this kind of feeling every week from here on out.

Sunday 2/16/03: 12 mi
My best run in a loooooooonnnnngggggg time. Was really cold out today so I donned Finley's orgo ski mask and bundled up to run Bee-Woodcock-43 and added on 2 miles runing out and back on Oblong, 81 min and felt like a long run should. Ran with VV for the first half of it before he finished Oblong to do 16 or so, finished it out by myself. Shin wasn't as bad as it has been lately. Haven't done a run like this since September 2, 2002, so this was a long time coming.

Saturday 2/15/03: 7 mi, 0.5 mi hard
After watching our team time trial today, ran Gale plus, did 8x100 strides in the field house, then finished up with a cemetary loop plus for 7 mi total running, 48 min. Spent all morning at Prospect Mt. helping with the Nordic Skiing races for winter carnival and it was really cold out, but managed to get in my run ok. Felt good, consistent good days is getting me excited about training again. Shin was about the same as its been.

Friday 2/14/03: 8 mi
Quite cold outside so I was planning to run half outside half in, but once I finished running Gale I wasn't doing too bad so I added on a loop through upper Williamstown that got me to about 5.25 mi. At that point I decided I should warm up in the field house so ran about 0.75 mi around the track before heading outside again for another 2 mi for a total of 8 mi in 55 min. Felt ok but the shin was still hurting, Pete mentioned that a bunch of people were having trouble with their right shins due to all of the indoor running, iced it after the run. Illness not too bad, just a bit of a lingering cough.

Thursday 2/13/03: 4 mi
Still feeling under the weather but better than yesterday. Ran easy for 28 min indoors, felt fine, ran alongside a few of the guys periodically who would do a few laps with me on their recovery or cool down. Shin was bothering me a little bit today, keeping up with the icing. As long as it isn't too cold tomorrow should be able to run longer.

Wednesday 2/12/03: Rest
I woke up feeling much worse than yesterday so took today off, I need to get better and running in the extreme cold of today is not a good idea. We have a basketball game tonight as we are in the playoffs so I'll get a little exercise in, hopefully it will help me feel better.

Tuesday 2/11/03: AM 4 mi, PM 7 mi
Ran Gale plus easy in the morning for an easy 29 min. In the afternoon, ran Henderson plus for an easy 7 mi in 50 min, average HR of 147. Good to double to get in some extra mileage, work isn't so bad so far so I have time to sleep a lot. Starting to feel a little sick, so drinking lots of water and OJ and trying to get more sleep. My shin was hurting a little more than it has been on the downhills so made sure to ice it afterwards. Felt good on both runs, starting to get back into it again in the "train through" group.

Monday 2/10/03: 7.5 mi, 0.25 mi hard
Ran Blair-Luce easy by myself, adding on a little more than a mile, 51 min total. Nice out, a light snow was falling during the whole run and I felt good. Stretched out in the field house afterwards, then did some mini hurdles and bounding into faster running to work on my speed. Switching into training mode for about a month to prepare for outdoor, so more easy mileage and longer runs and less track work for a while here. A good day.

Week of 2/3/03

Week: 40.5 mi, 4 mi hard, 6 runs. Not a good week of running, had to take a day off because I was just not feeling it. Didn't have a particularly good workout nor did I race very well, but the best news in many weeks was that off the diuretic I was able to do a good long run. I hope that I will continue to improve in the next week and can start training on all cylinders. 6 weeks until spring break, I need to put in 6 solid weeks to get where I want to be for outdoor.

Sunday 2/9/03: 8 mi
Finally. Did a long run up in Clarksburg and felt good on such a run for the first time since December. Ran the loop in 54 min, and the last 2 miles were much slower as the headwind along route 8 was really bad so was averaging much better than that on the first part of the run. Average HR was 159. Only switched medications 2 days ago so I'm probably not back to full strength yet.

Saturday 2/8/03: 8 mi, 2.25 mi hard
Raced a 3k at Dartmouth, ran 9:41.70, not a great race. Read about it on the
races page. Cooled down 4 mi afterwards with Mitch and Bryan. Probably my last indoor meet of the season, I need to start training better with more consistency and not racing will help me do that.

Friday 2/7/03: 3.5 mi
Ran Gale easy and then did 4x100 strides in the field house. Felt alright, a little lighter of a day, I'm hoping to have a good race tomorrow. First day of classes, looks to be an interesting and exciting semester.

Thursday 2/6/03: 7 mi
Ran an easy 7 mi, 49 min, ran out to Mount Hope Farm and ran around there and back. New shoes, they were too tight as always and I had to loosen them up midway through the run, other than that they were fine. My shin was still bothering me a little, iced it afterwards. Got my blood drawn today to check potassium levels, I should know soon if my medication is indeed what is causing my trouble.

Wednesday 2/5/03: 7 mi, 1.5 mi hard
Track workout, after warming up 2 mi and doing some drills and strides, ran 600 at 3k pace, 2.5 min rest, 800 at 3k pace, 3.5 min rest, 600 at 1500 pace, 3.5 min rest, and finally a fast 400. Splits were 1:54, 2:32, 1:43, 66, ran with Andy the whole time. Supposed to be a lighter workout but as has been the case recently on days with more fast work I was totally drained by the end. Should have this medication business fixed by the end of the week. Not a totally bad day, this workout was a lot like the workout before MIT and I still ran a decent race. Did a circuit afterwards and iced my shin.

Tuesday 2/4/03: Rest
Still feeling kind of beat from 2 days ago so I decided to take today off. The weather was also really unpleasant, rain and hail all day. I've been feeling a slight pain in my right shin the last few days, stretched it out well today and it was feeling better. Finally got the shoes I ordered and jogged around in them to start breaking them in. Hope I'm feeling good again tomorrow for the workout.

Monday 2/3/03: 7 mi
Ran Blair-Luce Backwards and tacked on Gale on my way back down 43, was a long 7 mi in 54 min. Didn't feel particularly great and was still feeling yesterday's debacle of a run. Not much I can do but keep running and sort out this medication business. The warm spell continues to give great running weather for this time of year.

Week of 1/27/03

Week: 55.5 mi, 6.5 mi hard, 8 runs. Everything is falling into place except for the long runs, I felt good all week except when I tried to a harder run longer than an hour, on those I had to stop and walk. Hope that changing medication will fix this problem as its the only thing I'm doing differently than earlier when I was running fine.

Sunday 2/2/03: 6 mi
Was going to do my long run but felt absolutely miserable so cut it short. Was running with VV and Mini Neal then I started feeling horrible about 3 miles in so just finished Blair-Luce in 47 min. Every long run has been terrible so far since I've been taking the diuretic, and the one long run I did before that was the best first long run I've ever done, so I'm going to stop taking it and see where that gets me.

Saturday 2/1/03: 7 mi
Ran by myself for 49 min, the first 6 mi I ran on Henderson, then added on a loop around campus to get the extra mile, ran some of that with Mitch back to Hopkins. Felt pretty comfortable on the hills, average HR was 147. It wasn't too cold out today so it was nice. Felt good and the pace wasn't bad, things are starting to come around.

Friday 1/31/03: AM 4 mi, PM 8 mi, 3.5 mi hard
Ran easy for 29 min in the morning for an easy 4. In the afternoon, did a 20 min tempo interval on Scott Hill then added on along West Main for 57 min of total running. Felt good on the tempo interval, held pace and cadence pretty well, I had a really bad monster attack at the end of it but was able to make it to the Williams Inn. Need more days like this.

Thursday 1/30/03: 7 mi
Finished my winter study paper at 4:00 so went out for Blair-Luce starting and ending at Hopkins after I turned it in. Ran easy for 50 min, about 7 mi, was moving along pretty well and average HR was 143. Mini Neal caught up with me at the top of Blair, so we ran the rest of the way together. Was beautiful outside and felt good and smooth.

Wednesday 1/29/03: 9 mi
Ran back from Pownal over Northwest Hill for a solid hilly 9 mi run, 65 min. Still had the same problems that I've been having recently, really had trouble going up the big hills. Saw the doctor today and my blood pressure was high again, so who knows what's up with that now. Warmer today than it has been so it was nice to be running outside.

Tuesday 1/28/03: 8.5 mi, 3 mi hard
Track workout, after warming up 2 mi, did half a mile of easy strides with exercises. For the workout, 600 at 1000 pace and 300 at 800 pace with 90 sec rest, then after a long rest with 3 mins of cruising did 1200 at 5k, 1000 slightly faster, and finally 800 at 3k pace, equal recovery between intervals. Splits were 1:40, 48, 4:00, 3:14, and 2:30. Felt really good overall, pacing was good and was surprised with how well the workout went, I ended up a little fast on my last splits but felt relaxed and smooth. Cooled down on Knolls with VV, was glad that it wasn't too cold out.

Monday 1/27/03: 6 mi
Ran a short 6, half outside, half inside as I've been doing in the cold. Ran Gale easy then ran in the field house for 42 min of total running, felt pretty relaxed and was just getting in good easy mileage. Average HR was only 139. Really tired of running inside so much, it needs to warm up outside.

Week of 1/20/03

Week: 43.5 mi, 4.75 mi hard, 6 runs. Nice recovery week, but my legs weren't feeling totally rested. Got in a much better race than last week. However the continued trouble on long runs is a cause for concern, my guess is that the diuretic I'm taking is the culprit here. I'm getting back, slowly but surely.

Sunday 1/26/03: 11 mi
Did a long run in Pownal for a solid 11 mi, ran for 78 min with some decent hills in it. Wasn't feeling too good by the end, I've come to the conclusion that a diuretic isn't the right way for me to treat my high blood pressure since all of my long runs have been miserable since I started taking the medication. Was warmer out than it has been, into the 20's today, but it was snowing lightly throughout the run and I was covered with a thin layer of snow by the end.

Saturday 1/25/03: 7.5 mi, 3.25 mi hard
Ran the 5k at the MIT meet, ran 16:44.04. Read more about it in the
races section. Only got to cool down for a little more than 2 mi afterwards because everyone else was chomping at the bit to leave. Nice day outside in the Boston area, I was running without a hat and wasn't cold, but a little windy on the cool down.

Friday 1/24/03: 5 mi
Ran North Hoosac easy, felt pretty relaxed and it wasn't too cold outisde, actually quite pleasant, I should have worn a thinner bottom layer. Ended in the Field House to run 4x100 strides, strides felt nice. Saw Pete there and talked with him for a minute, then ran back to Hopkins to get in a good 5 mi. Legs still don't feel totally recovered, if they don't improve in the next few days I'm probably going to see about switching blood pressure medications.

Thursday 1/23/03: 4 mi
Still really cold outside today so I figured I would do something along the lines of yesterday's run. We talked for a while with the team in the field house and I realized that it was after 5:00 and I still hadn't run, so I went out for a quick Gale and it actually wasn't too bad, the wind had calmed down so it was pretty tolerable. When I came in with ice in my hair sticking out of my hat and bright rosy cheeks Coach White laughed at me, and I replied, "It's great out there, Coach." He said back, "I'm just glad it's you out there and not me." After ran a little bit on the indoor track with Hannan but the distance team was playing knock out so I had to get out there and play so only got in about 4 today. Was hoping to do a little more but we had a basketball game tonight too so I guess the mileage will just have to take a hit.

Wednesday 1/22/03: 8 mi
Ran outside for 30 min, ran Gale then added on a little, then ran inside for 30 min in the field house to get in about 8 mi total of easy running, 60 min. It was extremely cold outside, I was really bundled up but my face was freezing due to the wind. Inside ran with Winkler for a little while. Realized that I'd have to get used to holding my focus while running on a track for at least that long outdoors running the 10k, so it was good practice. Did a weight circuit afterwards.

Tuesday 1/21/03: 8 mi, 1.5 mi hard
Warmed up 2 mi outside, did some drills, then ran 3x400 at 1500 goal pace with a 5 second differential between 200s with 3 min rest, then 2x600 at 1500 date pace +2 sec per 400 with 2.5 min rest. The workout was supposed to include another 600 and a set of 2 differential 400s, but my legs were heavy and I wasn't feeling right. Ran 36/32 for each 400, a little slow but I don't have any wheels yet so it's ok, then 1:48 for each 600, right on pace. Cooled down inside as it was very cold for 8 mi total. Good to get in a session of faster track work. I think that my blood pressure medication has been sapping my electrolytes as a diuretic which has been giving me trouble on more intense running sessions, so I'm going to run easy the next few days.

Monday 1/20/03: Rest
Took a rest day today, I felt like after last week my body could use a break. Got on the bike for 30 min of easy riding to loosen up, which felt good. Going to be ready for a good track workout tomorrow.

Week of 1/13/03

Week: 60 mi, 6 mi hard, 9 runs. An interesting week, got in decent volume, a solid workout, and a race. I'm starting to make progress, but off of only 2.5 weeks of solid running I still have a ways to go, especially in the long run department. Easy runs are starting to be more relaxed and while this week's race wasn't great I think they will start improving.

Sunday 1/19/03: 8 mi
Did a "long run" which was actually a run up to the pass from Petersburg, NY. Ran 4 mi flat before starting up the 5 mi hill with Karl, Winkler, Eli, mini Neal, Bryan, and VV, then they promptly blew me away going up the hill. Made it 4 mi up the hill before deciding to call it quits, I wasn't feeling good today. Ran for 63 min so the run is probably equivalent to at least 9 mi. Off of only 2.5 weeks of real training I haven't gotten into good long run shape yet so I have work to do.

Saturday 1/18/03: 8 mi, 3 mi hard
Raced a 3k at Tufts, ran 9:46.64. See the
races page. Afterwards cooled down for 4 mi and cruised 3x2 min with mini Neal and Bryan, and ran another mile inside for 8 mi total.

Friday 1/17/03: 5.5 mi
Easy premeet run, ran about 4.25 mi, did 4x100 strides in the field house, then ran another mile back to Hopkins. Was going to run Galvin but they closed off the bridge over the railroad tracks, so at that point I turned around and ran back to the field house. Really really cold outside, I wish I had worn warmer clothing, and my hands were painfully cold by the end of the run. Felt pretty good on the run, we'll see how things go tomorrow, racing a 3k at Tufts.

Thursday 1/16/03: 7 mi
Ran Scott Hill by myself in the afternoon, an easy 51 min. Was going to double this morning but I was really exhausted from yesterday as I played a basketball game after doubling with a hard workout so I slept in to be sure and recover. Uneventful run, average HR was 142 and I was moving along at a comfortable pace the whole time.

Wednesday 1/15/03: AM 4 mi, PM 8 mi, 3 mi hard
Ran easy by myself for 30 min in the morning. In the afternoon, warmed up 2 mi, did some drills and strides then ran 2x800 at 3K date, 2x200 at 1500 goal, then a mile at 5K date +10 sec, and finally 800 at 3K date and 200 at 1500 goal. Splits were good, 2:34, 2:33, 33, 33, 5:26, 2:34, 33, and everything was evenly paced except for the last 800 where I was out a little fast. Good to get in some good track work, and while I'm certainly not fit yet it was a good step and it was also good to know that my sense of pace is as good as ever.

Tuesday 1/14/03: AM 4 mi, PM 6.5 mi
Ran easy for 30 min by myself in the morning. In the afternoon, ran Blair-Luce from Hopkins in 49 min for an easy 6.5 mi. Some parts still had a bit of snow on them which slowed me down, but it was 3 minutes faster than last week. Average HR was only 141 so my runs are becoming more and more relaxed. It was really cold out today and supposed to get even worse, so I'm in for a fun week, and by fun I mean many cold runs.

Monday 1/13/03: 9 mi
Did a good distance run in Pownal for 60 min, average HR was 162. Felt good, didn't feel my achilles at all and was moving along pretty well for most of it. Ran parts with Ace, Eli, Winkler, and mini Neal. Started to get tired at the end when I was running with Winkler, so I let him go and finished up by myself. Going to get in the weight room this afternoon or this evening.

Week of 1/6/03

Week: 44.5 mi, 2.25 mi hard, 8 runs. Starting to get a decent base back, the runs are getting easier but I still have a ways to go to get where I want to be by the end of indoor. The minor injury was a slight setback but not a big deal, I'm pretty sure I'm over it already and ready to get in good volume next week.

Sunday 1/12/03: 6 mi
Went with the team up to Dartmouth to watch/help time at the Dartmouth Relays and went for an awesome run. Ran easy up a hill for 2 mi then turned on a road that looked nice, it turned into a gorgeous dirt road after a mile. It ran into the Dartmouth Cross Country Ski area then back over towards the golf course where we had the Dartmouth Invite in September, took that back to the field house for a 43 min run. I felt really smooth and relaxed with average HR of 148, could only feel my achilles on the initial hill, I should be training normally again tomorrow.

Saturday 1/11/03: 3 mi
My achilles wasn't as sore this morning when I woke up so I ran Gale easy. Nice and relaxed and while I certainly noticed my achilles wasn't 100%, it didn't cause any discomfort so I'm confident that I'll be able to resume good training next week. Glad that this wasn't much of a setback.

Friday 1/10/03: Rest
Tried running in the morning but it was immediately clear that my left achilles wasn't doing well, I landed on it funny last night playing basketball and it was hurting when I woke up. Decided just to rest today, it wasn't hurting walking around in the afternoon so I hope it feels better tomorrow.

Thursday 1/9/03: AM 4 mi, PM 6 mi
Ran an easy 4 by myself in the morning, 30 min. In the afternoon ran Blair-Luce backwards, easy in 45 min with the Ace and Adrian for part of it. Starting to get the base back, average HR was 150 and was relaxed and comfortable for most of the way. Didn't use my inhaler but I didn't notice it because I was just running easy. Did a weight circuit afterwards but I didn't stretch as well as I should have when I was done running.

Wednesday 1/8/03: 8 mi
Pete drove us to North Adams and we ran back over Reservoir for a good 8 mi run, 56 min. Felt ok, it wasn't too cold but there was some bad wind in the more exposed areas like the reservoir or farms. Ran out of gas a little at the end because I didn't have time to eat anything beforehand.

Tuesday 1/7/03: AM 4 mi, PM 7 mi, 2.25 mi hard
Ran an easy 4 mi in the morning in 30 min by myself. In the afternoon, warmed up 2 mi then cruised 2x6 min with 3 min recovery with surges at 5K or 3K pace when Pete blew a whistle. Felt pretty smooth and while I wasn't going that fast it felt good to get in some more fast running, the guys who were in better shape did a third interval. Cooled down 2.5 mi with Geoff, got in some good stretching afterwards. Good day.

Monday 1/6/03: 6.5 mi
Ran Blair-Luce from Hopkins, saw VV on the way out so ran with him. 50 min due to some parts being pretty rough with snow, but on the clear roads we were hitting a decent pace. Started out easier and came home strong, felt good and comfortable most of the way. Average HR was 155, it was higher during snowy parts where we had to work hard and there wasn't much traction, but much of the time it was at a good level. Good way to start off winter study.

Week of 12/30/02

Week: 37.5 mi, 1.25 mi hard, 5 runs. Glad to be back training full swing again, I was very glad to be able to do some good runs this week and not feel miserable while doing so. Time to increase the volume to a good level again with some doubles during winter study at school.

Sunday 1/5/03: Rest
Flew back to school today, spent all day travelling so I just rested. I felt a little sick this morning so its just as well that I didn't run today. Looking forward to getting back into good training again next week.

Saturday 1/4/03: 9 mi
Did a hilly long run in the hills for 66 min, Powerline-Red Brick. Hills were very difficult, I had to stop and walk a few times, but I made it through ok. HR was extremely high, I probably haven't recovered from the last few days of running yet. It was fairly warm out today, I drank most of my gatorade during the run that I had with me. Resting tomorrow as I'm flying back to school.

Friday 1/3/03: 7 mi
Ran Claremont and 6th in 51 min, was going pretty easy for most of it to be sure that I recover. Yesterday's workout didn't get to me and I was feeling pretty good. My foot was hurting a little bit at the beginning of the run but it went away after about a mile and felt fine after that.

Thursday 1/2/03: 8.5 mi, 1.25 mi hard
Feels great to be running at full strengh again. Did a first workout to make the next few weeks a little easier on the legs, warmed up 2 mi and did drills, then did 4x90 sec fartlek at Griffith Park with 3 min recovery. A little hard on the legs but I held form and cadence fairly well for the first time. Did a long cooldown along the bike trail afterwards, including a little run up Sycamore Canyon's trails. Glad to be running as much as I would like again, the legs are starting to get back into it.

Wednesday 1/1/03: 7 mi
Didn't feel like running this morning so I went out during halftime of the Rose Bowl, ended up feeling good and going longer than I planned to. Ran Old Fire Station in 48 min, felt good and was running kind of hard but not pushing it. Average HR was 159, better than it was anytime last week so that seems to be getting better. Glad to start off the new year the right was running wise.

Tuesday 12/31/02: 6 mi
Ran Webb Longhill in 40 min. Felt much better today, I was going to run shorter but since I was feeling good I went ahead and did a good run. HR was much better than it has been lately and I didn't have nearly the same trouble as I've been having. A good sign to have a run this good.

Monday 12/30/02: Rest
Still wasn't feeling much better so rested again today. Hope to feel a little better tomorrow and will resume running. If not I'm seeing the doctor again on Thursday, my mom thinks it may be the blood pressure medication causing the trouble.

Week of 12/23/02

Week: 27.5 mi, 0.25 mi hard, 5 runs. I clearly have not solved my troubles from the fall as they came storming back this week, I really still have no idea what is the cause of this or what I need to do to get healthy. The runs became miserable by the end of the week and that was the sign that there is still something going wrong. I'm not sure where to go from here, whether to rest up or at least keep some light running going.

Sunday 12/29/02: Rest
Really hate to do this but I'm clearly having trouble again with my health again so I rested today. A long run like the runs I've been having will not do me any good. Drove back to Claremont this morning and celebrated Christmas with my mom's extended family.

Saturday 12/28/02: 6 mi
Ran with Engler in San Diego, we ran for 40 min along horse trails in Rancho Santa Fe for a short 6 mi. I felt really awful again, HR was really high, my legs were very dead and the cramping trouble continues. Had a bad monster attack that some wanker on the golf course did not help as he told us the wrong combination to the golf course bathroom just to get us to go away, fortunately I made it back to the car.

Friday 12/27/02: 6 mi
Did Padua and Pomello in 44 min, didn't feel as bad as yesterday but was having the same problems. Legs felt ok but my HR was too high, average of 167. I thought I did a good job of working through the tough parts, I hope these runs don't continue to be bad.

Thursday 12/26/02: 5.5 mi, 0.25 mi hard
Ran Leroy's via the stairs in 39 min, stopping at Griffith Park to do 4x100 strides. Felt absolutely miserable the whole run and my HR was pretty high, my legs felt ok but I was having trouble with abdominal cramping, probably from the medication still, and I felt like I was going to puke most of the run. My legs felt good on the strides as I am introducing faster running, but I still had the above problems. Just a bad day, hopefully will feel better tomorrow.

Wednesday 12/25/02: Rest
Merry Christmas! Rested today and spent the holiday with my family.

Tuesday 12/24/02: 6 mi
Ran Grand and Pomello in 43 min. I started medication for my high blood pressure today and it definetly dehydrated me like it said it would, I also had trouble with abdominal cramping from the medicine. Not a bad run besides that, felt fairly smooth and held pace fairly well.

Monday 12/23/02: 4 mi
Ran Miramar and Mills in 29 min. Felt good, fairly relaxed, and my heart rate wasn't as elevated as it has been this last week. I spent today doing blood and urine tests for the doctor and doing all of my shopping, so it was a pretty busy day.

Week of 12/16/02

Week: 25 mi, 5 runs. A good first week of training, I think I'm starting to adapt to running daily again. Was only sore on Thursday, and had a good first long run. Next week I'll add some strides to get my fast twitch muscles working again and start to increase my mileage toward full volume.

Sunday 12/22/02: 7 mi
My first long run in a while, ran Red Brick in 55 min. It was dark out because my parents made me come pick out some Christmas Gifts (I know that it spoils the surprise but that's what they wanted me to do) and I didn't start running until 4:45 so it was dark out. Did well on the hills, only stopped once on the uphill to enjoy the view of the lights in the valley, but running in the hills alone in the dark is one of the scariest things that I've done in a while.

Saturday 12/21/02: Rest
On tour with TLG so spent the day driving from Hesperia to Ridgecrest and hanging around Ridgecrest waiting for our show. Fun time with the guys and a fun show, but not a lot of people there watching.

Friday 12/20/02: 3 mi
Ran Radcliffe Loop for an easy 3+ before heading off on tour with The Los Greengos! 23 min, and had a nice run in the rain.

Thursday 12/19/02: 4 mi
Ran for 4 mi through the colleges in the morning, 29 min. Was a little sore as I haven't run on consecutive days for over a month until I ran 3 days in a row now. Didn't feel great in general but made it through the run ok.

Wednesday 12/18/02: 6 mi
Webb Longhill for a short 6 mi, 41 min. Was cruising along fairly well today, and the trail was a little muddy from the rain we've had the last two days. The hill was a little hard but I got through it ok, my heart rate was fine until the last 10 minutes of the run when it was elevated a little bit. Overall a good run.

Tuesday 12/17/02: 5 mi
Ran Miramar and Padua, about 5 mi, 37 min. Feeling better than yesterday and I felt better than I had while back at school, maybe it's just something about being home that got me back feeling good again. Pretty good run except my calves are hurting, probably from running on the roads again.

Monday 12/16/02: Rest
Still sick with a bit of a cold, didn't feel particularly good so I didn't run, hopefully will feel better tomorrow.

Week of 12/9/02

Week: 8.5 mi, 2 runs. Finals week was especially tough this year so I didn't end up running as much as I wanted to. However, I'm glad to be home finally with nice weather to train in, maybe that will help get me healthy and running strong again.

Sunday 12/15/02: Rest
Was feeling kind of sick today so rested so that I hopefully will feel better to start running for real again.

Saturday 12/24/02: Rest
Flying home for winter break!

Friday 12/13/02: 3 mi
Ran Gale with the rest of the class of '04 minus Aaron (who's still recovering from a stress fracture) and Aidan (who's a chump). Felt better than I have been but the heart was still racing for much of the run. Good to get in one last run with all of us here.

Thursday 12/12/02: Rest
Took my Art History Final today, wasn't very much fun, and had to go and start studying for my Chem final right afterwards. Running tomorrow morning for sure to clear my head.

Wednesday 12/11/02: 5.5 mi
Ran Blair Short with Engler fairly easy from Hopkins, 40 min. Freezing rain started coming down in the middle of the run which was kind of miserable. My heart rate was quite high, for how hard I was running it seemed unusually high. Still feel slightly fatigued in general, hope that it's from the high blood pressure so that taking care of that helps me run better. Did a circuit afterwards, hamstrings are hurting again from it.

Tuesday 12/10/02: Rest
Wanted to run today but didn't finish taking my Physics final until after 6. Definetly going to run tomorrow, I've taken 3 days off in a row.

Monday 12/9/02: Rest
Didn't feel like running today, took an exam this morning and then sort of studied in the afternoon, not so much that I needed to take a run. Went to the health center to see the doctor, decided I'm going to see a doctor back home about my high blood pressure so its going to be another light week running-wise.

Week of 12/2/02

Week: 12 mi, 0 mi hard, 3 runs. A rough week academically so just did a little running to keep me from going out of my mind. Going to have a similar week like this next week, and possibly more after that until I'm healthy again.

Sunday 12/8/02: Rest
Had a lot of work to get done for the XC banquet and my 4 exams so spent most of the day working then went to the XC banquet. Some good roasts this year, and always great to look back on the season.

Saturday 12/7/02: 3 mi
Was working all day so took a break to run Gale with Engler. Heart rate was pretty high again, and I felt so-so. Still don't feel completely healthy so continuing with small doses of easy running.

Friday 12/6/02: Rest
Took today off, was feeling a little better but I still have a problem set I have to finish today so decided to rest today and run tomorrow. Last day of classes, now just exam week them I'm home free for 2 months.

Thursday 12/5/02: Rest
Rested today, my cold was still bothering me and I spent all afternoon finishing a problem set, it was dark when we finished. Talked with Pete this morning, he wants me on the get healthy training schedule without much running until break.

Wednesday 12/4/02: 3 mi
Ran Gale easy as I still have a bit of a cold. 24 min, heart rate was high even for how easy I'm running. I still don't think that I'm healthy, my blood pressure is high and they want to check that again at the health center. Going to keep doing just a light amount of easy running until I this health issue gets sorted out.

Tuesday 12/3/02: Rest
Still kind of sick and not feeling well so I took today off. I'm also a little sore from yesterday's run. Have lots of schoolwork to finish too, I hate crunch time.

Monday 12/2/02: 6 mi
Ran Blair with Teddy and Shamus and did Luce with Shamus for a long 6, 44 min from Hopkins. Heart rate was really high as I was running pretty hard. Feeling kind of wiped afterward and I think I'm a little sick.

Week of 11/25/02

Week: 6 mi, 0 mi hard, 1 run. Didn't really end up starting training this week as I forgot to bring my running shoes on break. Not a big deal, it was just going to be one of a few transitional training weeks anyways.

Sunday 12/1/02: Rest
Coming back to school after a nice and restful Thanksgiving break in Hartford.

Saturday 11/30/02: Rest
Once again, I would have run if I had remembered my running shoes, just took a rest day again.

Friday 11/29/02: Rest
Didn't have my running shoes so I took another day off.

Thursday 11/28/02: Rest
Happy Thanksgiving! Spent Thanksgiving with a bunch of my cousins in Hartford.

Wednesday 11/27/02: Rest
Being the huge idiot that I am, I forgot to bring my running shoes on break with me. I wouldn't have had a chance to run today anyways, I was helping my relatives move all day and we got 6 inches of snow last night.

Tuesday 11/26/02: 6 mi
Ran Blair Short from Hopkins in the morning as I had no class today, a short 6 miles. Not bad for a first run, heart rate was kind of high but I felt ok. Heading to Hartford for Thanksgiving break, I'll update it again when I get back.

Monday 11/25/02: Rest
Finished up classes before break and got my blood drawn to check my iron levels as I think that might be what was causing my trouble this fall. Going to start training again tomorrow.
