Magical Mystery Quilt

Part Seven

This is the truly magical part of quilting, my very favorite part: putting the quilt together. And the best thing is, there's no way to mess it up, with this one.
Make eleven strips of blocks, alternating Block A (pinwheels) with Block B (what I call "cogs"). Strips should be ten blocks each. Sew the strips together, alternating which block comes first, so that a checkerboard pattern of blocks is created, like so:

A B A B A B A B A B
B A B A B A B A B A
A B A B A B A B A B
and etc.

The pattern is a little busy, but that's what makes it such a great scrap pattern. There's a problem with scrap quilts and basic, old-fashioned block quilts in that we expect them to be somehow unified and organized.

This quilt design occurred when my friend wanted to make pinwheel blocks for her first quilt. I thought that would be a little dull, so I suggested this instead.
