Magical Mystery Quilt

Part Eight

I know I originally said nine parts, but then I decided to make all the borders one step.

Cut the two dark fabrics into nine 3.5" strips each. Then cut two 2.25" strips from each dark fabric. Choose which dark will go on the outside, and which on the inside. Of the outside dark, sub-cut the 2.25" strips into eight 10.75" strips. Of the inside dark, sub-cut the 2.25" strips into four 10.75" strips and four 9" strips. Cut nine 6.5" strips from the other border fabric, and then cut one 5.125" (five and an eighth) strip from the third fabric. Sub-cut the 5.125" strip into 5.125" squares, and then cut them in half diagonally to make triangles. You will need 16 of these triangles.

Measure the quilt in length and width at the ends and in the middle. Average all of the length measurements to get the "true" length of the quilt; do the same for the width.

Take a pinwheel block (Block A) from the blocks set aside. Sew the medium triangles to the block, long sides to the block, to make a square with the pinwheel block on the inside, set on point. Make four of these total. Follow the pictures below to sew on the border strips, using the 2.25" cuts made in the first step of this part.

Sew each set of nine strips together first to make three very long strips, measuring 3.5", 3.5" and 6.5" in width. Sew these strips together dark-medium-dark, making one 12.5" strip. Trim one end with a rotary cutter. Measure out two widths-of-quilt and one length-of-quilt from the strip. Sew the two length-of-quilt strips to the quilt, being sure to keep the same "inside darks" on the indide. Sew the blocks you just made to the two width strips like so:

Sew the strips to the border, keeping the "inside darks" on the inside.

Quilt and be merry! The project is finished!
