I Love My TV

Maggie Simpson Hugging Her
TV

All my life I have firmly believed that TV can be used as an educational tool, and not just an electronic babysitter. Therefore, in the interest of our national pride, I present a list of TV shows that have made me who I am today.

The Simpsons

This show is amazingly funny on so many levels it hurts my brain to think about. No show makes fun of itself and the world around it in so many new and different ways every week for so many years without getting old. Everything in this world has a connection to a "Simpsons" episode.

SportsCenter

What can I say, I love these guys. I was terribly saddened by the departure of both Craig and Keith in the last few years. Nonetheless, the show must go on, and indeed it does.

Dan on those lovely Sunday nights still rules, regardless of with whom he does the show, and especially if its Kenny [no photo available], formerly of the deuce. Those guys are all comic geniuses. I hope someday to grow up and be like them.

"CHiPs"

A quality, quality television show that shaped my early childhood. "CHiPs" was one of those shows that the family would sit around and watch together. "The Incredible Hulk" was another. I have fond memories of the years 1977-1983, when the show originally aired. Watching it today when I get the chance on TNT just gets me all choked up.

Jeopardy!

I do harbor some bitterness against this particular show, just because they have yet to let me on. When I first tried out for the Teen Tournament in '92, I didn't even pass the test. But when I tried out for the College Tourney in Fall '95, I knew what to expect, and passed the test. For some reason, however, they didn't think that I was good enough to be on the show. So, instead of being in LA on January, I was in Williamstown, being buried under a blanket of snow.

Square One TV

Sure, I might be a bit old for this type of show, but I watch it just for the "Mathnet." What a quality production, Mathnet, that is. Frankly and Monday are two of the best crime fighters there ever were. There are so many jokes that I don't think that I'll ever get from that show. Like "The Simpsons," "Mathnet" succeeds in several dimensions. I would be terribly mistaken, also, if I failed to mention James Earl Jones as the Boss, Thad Green. He's simply the man.

The Brady Bunch

One word: groovy. I guess that any show that kept me happy after school in my formative elementary school years is good enough for me.

Superfriends

What an amazing discovery when I found that the Cartoon Network shows the Superfriends every day at 6. Unfortunately, it goes head to head with the Simpsons out here, but hey, that's what commercials are for, right? Anyway, it didn't take me long to get back intot he groove of loving the Superfriends fighting the forces of evil from the Legion of Doom.

Batman, The Original Series

Every weekday morning, my brother and I would wake up at 7, make our beds, get dressed, and hurry down to watch the opening of the show. I always missed how Batman and Robin escaped from the trap of the previous episode, because I couldn't make my bed as fast as my brother. Once I got older, I began to notice a pattern that developed in every show. I won't reveal it here, in case someone has never noticed it.
