Missing the target

I designed this website to be compliant with the XHTML 1.1 DTD, and, along the way, realized just how many common HTML tags were now deprecated. This never presented a problem, since the functions of those tags were now taken over by similar tags in the stylesheet, resulting in clean, streamlined code. However, the good old <a target="xyz"> tag disappeared without having been replaced by a corresponding CSS attribute.

The tag, originally intended for framesets, enabled a link target to appear in a frame other than the one where the the link itself was located. Furthermore, it was possible to use four special values in conjunction with the tag, of which the most widely used one was "_blank," which opened the link target in a new window.

That very value, I learned, was the main reason that the target tag was deprecated, for it is supposedly considered bad style to open a new window without the user's consent. I myself consider it very convenient to have my links automatically open in new windows when I am reading weblogs, as there is often a multitude of links in weblog articles and returning using the back arrow or history is much more of a pain in the ass than simply closing the new window. But my preferences notwithstanding, there is simply a logical flaw in deprecating the tag.

Unrequested pop-ups, like the ones that appear upon entering or exiting a huge number of sites, are such an incredible annoyance that I would personally hand over whoever first came up with the idea to Uday Hussein. But those popups are created with simple JavaScript functions, not target="_blank". Ironically, the JavaScript functions remain completely valid, while the target tag, despite the fact has it many other functions and is essential for those who still use frameset-based websites, is gone.

Thus, I cannot see any plausible reason for deprecating the tag. If anyone could explain this to me, I would much appreciate it.

Oh, and yes, I'm aware that the tag is still valid for XHTML 1.0 Transitional. That's beside the point. It needs to be valid in future versions of XHTML as well.
