The Ringworld Series

Probably Niven's most famous books, and certainly his most famous uncollaborated novels, the Ringworld series (now a trilogy) has won a place in the annals of hard science fiction.

  • Ringworld (First in Ringworld Series)

In the far future, Louis Wu is recruited, along with several other individuals of various races, to investigate the secrets of an alien artifact. In doing so, he learns not only about its mysterious creators, but his own race as well.

  • Ringworld Engineers (Second in Ringworld series)

The Puppeteer Hindmost kidnaps Louis Wu, now a wirehead, and Chmee (aka Speaker-To-Animals), bringing them again to the Ringworld, where they learn more of its mysterious creators. And yes, for all you physics majors out there, the Ringworld is unstable.

  • The Ringworld Throne (Third in Ringworld series)

Louis Wu, trapped on Ringworld (from the end of Ringworld Engineers ) and deprived of boosterspice, is living out the end of his life in his slow travels across the ring, when he is again swept up in the affairs of the Puppeteer Hindmost, Protectors, and Ghouls. I did not enjoy this book as much as I did the previous two, but it's still a good read.
