Philosophy of Partial Powers
Both my old and my new powers systems are based off my theories of
what types of powers make for the most "in-genre" Amber game. Looking
at the books, we see a few things:
- There seem to be fairly clear limits to powers. That is, Corwin
has a series of tricks that he knows how to do with Pattern, and
that's it. Fiona may have more tricks, but she, too, is limited to
a defined number. Of course, these tricks may be fairly versatile
Gérard was pretty amazed when Corwin destroyed part of
the Black Road with his Pattern Defense. But none the less, Corwin
wasn't doing anything new with those powers, he was just
pushing harder with what he had.
- People don't necessarily follow the same paths to the higher
powers. Both Brand and Caine pretty clearly had powerful Trump
abilities, but there's no real indication that Brand could do the
sort of spying that Caine could do, and Caine obviously didn't have
Brand's "Living Trump" powers. For these two reasons, I don't like
the concept of "powers as stats" (that is, just bidding any number
of points in, say, Pattern).
- There are very few dabblers in the Amber Universe. If you do
something, you tend to commit to it. Even Merlin, who dabbles a lot
more than most, has brought himself to at least general comptency in
all his powers. For this reason, I try to make my partial powers
systems have relatively high-priced initial powers, which represent
the steps of learning those powers (or being initiated into them).
If you're going to learn a power, be prepared to commit some fairly
serious points to it.
- There is no indication that anyone who has walked the
Pattern can't Shadowwalk, or, indeed, perform most of the tricks
that Corwin could. For this reason, despite this being a "partial
powers" system, there's a big chunck of a power to buy for Logrus
and Pattern (less in the second version of the powers).
So here's what you'll find in my partial powers systems: You always
buy a real power for each expenditure of points. Every time you spend
points, you'll be able to do something you couldn't do before. There
are no powers that are "initiate of the Pattern no powers yet,"
and there are no powers that are, "faster and stronger Trump
contacts."
So how do you get better at the powers you've already got? Spend more
in that power. If you've spent only 30 points on Pattern, and Joe's
spent 75 points on Pattern, then Joe's going to not only be able to
more than you, he'll be able to do everything you can do, more
skillfully.
Of course, if you've got a great Psyche, you might be able to make up
for being behind in a power, but Psyche is always the applicaation of
brute force. Sometimes, it's enough, but it's never elegant, and
sometimes it's worse than useless.
Some more specific stuff: I don't quite buy into the whole "Trump
Tricks" as seperate from Trump drawing concept. In my systems, you
can get caller ID without Trump Drawing, but all the other Tricks
require drawing first. If I ever make a 3.0 version of Trump, I may
move some of the other, less useful, Tricks down to an easier level.
However, Trump Memory is emphatically staying after Trump Drawing.
Pattern Teleportation. It's stupid and twinky. I refuse to put it
into my Pattern power. If you want it, squeeze it in yourself. On a
somewhat less emotional level, my Powers system as currently written
is pretty hard on Trump, removing the power-source like abilities of
it (ie, no filling yourself with Trump, no "Trump powered" anything),
and one of the few reasons to get Trump is that it is the only
way to teleport under this power system, even in a limited way. So if
you put Pattern Teleport back in, be warned that you're further
weakening Trump.
Shapeshift Persona. Seriously, where does this come from? As far as
I can tell, it's completely made up by the ADRPG. I think it's
pretty lame, too. So, no changing yourself into Benedict. No
changing yourself into a Dragon which can cross Shadow. No gaining
powers by Shapeshifting. Shapeshifting is powerful enough as is.
I'm always interested in getting feedback on my work. If you use my
powers, write me at msulliva@wso.williams.edu
and tell me what happened. Best of luck.
