Today we thought we'd accomplish something, so we (Tom and I) decided to put up our storm windows while it was still nice out. This was a good idea with only a few minor flaws.

  • We have no idea what we're doing.
  • Upon entering the garage to retrieve the storm windows, they are buried beneath mounds of trash.
  • One of the two largest windows has a broken pane, and the wood on the other one is apparently unattached to the glass.
  • The number of windows on the house is much larger than the number of windows sitting in the garage.

None of this stopped us from attempting to storm the windows, though. We walked around the house and tried to size things up. They looked big. We tried to look around the house and make an educated guess as to which storm window might fit where, but our guesses all cut class. We could not find a single window that fit. I suggested we size things up further, and Tom suggested that we just cart a storm window around and try to fit it to every window on the house until we found where it went. I agreed to this plan because although it is terribly inefficient, I presumed it had the benefit of eventually working.

Of course, this was not the case. We carried the window all the way around the house, and as the neighbors probably looked on in amused bewilderment, we failed to find the proper location for it, so set it down again. Then we decided to bring the mountain to Muhammed, so we took every window we had and sized them up against the kitchen window.

    This also failed.

Eager to be thought of as incompetent idiots by our landlord, I decided to call her and ask what to do. She patiently explained which four windows needed storming. With this knowledge, we grabbed a storm window which she had described as using and carted it to the window outside Mandy's room. We easily removed the screen window, and then easily failed to get the storm window up. However, we did succeed at waking Mandy, who expressed surprise and displeasure at our bungling housekeeping attempts.

We took the storm window around to each of the specified windows until we finally found one the same size. Roughly. It didn't quite fit, but after a half hour of pushing and banging, and some tightening of screws, we got it to a point where it will stay attached to the side of the house by itself. Maybe it'll even keep heat in.

I hope so, because it's the only one we managed to get up today. But at current, my toes are still frozen, and I'm going to bed.
