Issue of the week: "License to Kill"
by Seth Brown

A moral some folks often speak
Is that one should turn the other cheek.
  If someone's a devil,
  Don't sink to their level
Because it just shows that you're weak.

This philosophy holds some appeal
In a universe that is ideal
But it seems out of place
  When the whole human race
Has problems in the world that are real.

Osama has terrorists near,
And we all have "bin Laden" with fear.
  They attack overseas
  Bombing at embassies
And they do not hold human life dear.

If base tyrants use assassination
One expects we'd have reciprocation.
  Yet to even conceive
  Of performing such deeds
Gives us too much moral consternation

When facing evil terrorists
Our government edict insists
  We can't shoot the villain
  To stop all the killing.
(Are we supposed to attack with our fists?)

Since we cannot assassinate foes,
We build tactical missile silos.
  Then despite good intent,
  We kill the innocent
Hoping maybe that the bad guy goes.

It would really be much more humane
To just kill the man causing the pain
  Dropping bombs overhead
  Leaves civilians dead
While the tyrant continues his reign.

Yet the government's still saying no,
We cannot seek to destroy our foe.
  This rule probably started
  When we were broken-hearted
For failing to bump off Castro.

Since that mishap a long time has passed,
And the knowledge that we've gained is vast.
  Perhaps now it makes sense
  To go on the offense
And assassinate despots at last.

Though it seems like an eye for an eye,
This response is worth giving a try.
  It is sinful to kill
  But okay when it will
Spare thousands more from having to die.
