Issue of the week: "Send in the Clones"
by Seth Brown(1)
also by Seth Brown(2)

Today's technology moves quite fast
When compared with science of years past.
  The advances we make
  Some think are a mistake
And the consequences are too vast.

The practice they'd like to postpone
Is the making of all sorts of clones.
  Many are fearing
  Genetic engineering
As something we shouldn't condone.

The issue became a big mess
Cloning sheep in the land of Loch Ness.
  They cloned "Dolly", Great Scots!
  And now they make lots
Of animals with this process.

The sheep was the first one to go,
But now they've taken cow embryo.
They feel it does no harm
  To have an organ farm
Or a "pharm", to those folks in the know.

Scientists working in barns are rife
Creating new animal life.
  Using advanced techniques,
  The geneticist seeks
To find hidden cures to end our strife

Animal organs are genetically changed,
With the genes in their glands rearranged.
  The new organs produced
  Can hopefully be used
For human transplants, although it seems strange.

To produce a new healthy protein,
Just takes drugs and a willing bovine.
  Drugs in mammary glands
  Change the genetic strands,
Then they pump it out like a machine.

It seems some benefits can be reaped,
But the price that we pay may be steep.
  An animal disease
  Invades human bodies
And then we may die in our sleep.

Before letting this practice run amok,
Let's see with what results we'll be stuck.
  Transplant organs are good,
  And the cow protein could
Help, but diseases would be quite bad luck.

Towards more protein research, cloning delves,
Though not yet fit to be on the shelves.
  Still, although dangerous,
  It could benefit us,
So let's make the most of ourselves.
