Issue of the week: "Designer Genes"
by Seth Brown

Scientific researchers expect
To find cures that will have some effect.
Well, quite soon they will find
  A whole new paradigm
With the grand Human Genome Project.

To map all human DNA strands
Is the goal which this project commands.
  It seems mere fantasy,
But in two years or three,
We may have full results in our hands.

This development makes many pleased,
Who believe we can wipe out disease.
  Ailments hereditary
  Will not seem so scary
Once we master A's, C's, G's, and T's.

After mapping out the human mosaic,
Today's medicine will seem archaic.
  Our lives will become placid
  When we control the acid
That's deoxyribonucleic.

Double helixes will bend to our will
As we conquer all that makes us ill.
  By attaining this goal,
  We will obtain control
Of genetics with no obstacle.

Yet this thought causes others to scamper
Who say, "We don't want to put a damper
  On all your revelry,
  But the human body
Is something with which you shouldn't tamper."

The result that these people are fearing
Is a world of genetic engineering.
  If we have "designer genes",
  What it probably means
Is that natural birth would be disappearing.

Once all babies are programmed at birth,
Of individuality there'll be a dearth.
  Any genetic trait
  That's not considered great
Will be torn from the face of the Earth.

Much as science is a thing to applaud,
The simple fact is: we're not god.
  And such changes immense
  Could have grave consequence
Which is why all of eugenics is flawed.

For we simply cannot comprehend
What effects things will have in the end.
Though we mean to do well,
Just like the road to hell,
Good intentions can bad things portend.
