Issue of the week: "No Spain, No Gain"
by Seth Brown

As we head towards the end of this year,
Nineteen Ninety-nine soon will be here.
  Political forces
  Are mounting their horses;
The millennium is drawing near.

It's the usual two party battle,
Based on rhetoric, bombast, and prattle.
  Each side planning to coax
  All the registered folks
By herding them in just like cattle.

There will be lots of un-heartfelt speeches,
Where no man believes what he preaches.
  Promises sure sound great,
  But they all dissipate
When the grand Oval Office one reaches.

So the two sides prepare for this war
With the same strategies as before.
  To capture the swing vote
  Is a goal not remote
For George W. Bush and Al Gore.

But there's now a new twist in the game:
Hispanics are fast gaining fame.
  This neglected minority
  Has acquired authority
From the numbers to which they lay claim.

As a group they have high population,
In the U.S. they outnumber Asians.
And they're fast on the track
  Of surpassing the blacks
As the largest minority nation.

The reason that pols gerrymander
Is to win where the numbers are grander.
So when one crowd gains power,
  Within the same hour
The sly candidates start to pander.

Clinton's administration can boast
Many Hispanics placed in key posts.
  Such as secretary
  of the US army
And of transportation coast to coast.

In addition to this clever measure,
He supports plans that Hispanics treasure.
  Affirmative action
  Gets cheerful reactions;
And votes are what follow from pleasure.

There is less of a great history
Between immigrants and GOP.
  There were no immigrants
  Who liked Pete Wilson's rants
When he ran against their policies.

This is why in the '96 poll,
Only twenty-one percent chose Dole.
  The Hispanics were hintin'
  That they preferred Clinton,
and his politics on the whole.

So when they hear the rise of Hispanics,
One expects that the GOP panics.
  But the new candidate
  Thinks it's perfectly great
Since he understands people mechanics.

George W. Bush tends to opine
Independently, not party line.
  His vote record has shown
That he thinks on his own
And Hispanics like this fact just fine.

So will his campaign meet with success
Or just end up as a big mess?
  The final deciding vote
  Is always the swing vote;
What happens now is anyone's guess.
