Issue of the week: "Guns in November"
by Seth
Brown
The winter season once again approaches late November
And marks the anniversary of things we should remember.
For November is the time of year when certain things were done
That changed our country's history by usage of a gun.
The earliest of all these tales begins amidst the snow
After Pilgrims landed here o'er three centuries ago.
They disembarked at Plymouth Rock from their ship the Mayflower
Believing that as settling went, they had all needed power.
However, they were ill-prepared for what the winter brought,
Incapable of doing simple labors that they ought.
In fact it's highly probable they would faced starvation,
Without the aid that they acquired from the Indian nation.
Squanto helped them reach a treaty with Chief Massassoit,
In order that the food be shared so Pilgrims could enjoy it.
They taught the Pilgrims many things, like how to hunt and fish,
Although the Pilgrims held their own when it came to one dish.
They loaded up their muskets full of gunpowder and shot,
While aiming at the tasty turkeys which they ate a lot.
And while a gun may be okay to shoot birds that say "gobble",
It got worse when we shot the Indians due to a squabble.
So guns had turned from animals to human folks as well,
Which brings us to the story of when John Kennedy fell.
It was less than two score ago, this Twenty-second day
When all the country heard the shot that murdered JFK.
Riding in his fancy car throughout the streets of Dallas
The bullet struck him dead, shot by a scoundrel who was callous.
Our president's assassination took a heavy toll,
And some folks blame the lone gunman atop the grassy knoll.
Others believe Lee Harvey Oswald really is at fault
For murdering our president whom we all did exalt.
Now thirty-five years later we still wonder who's involved;
One would expect that by now this mystery had been solved
Considering the whole affair was captured by Zapruder
(Even films by Peckinpah had rarely been much cruder).
But to this day we do not know what happened at that time,
We only know our sadness for a vile atrocious crime.
And so we see that guns can cause a momentous event
By being shot at turkeys or a famous president.
The moral that we learn is that when guns are used with vigor,
The end result depends on whose finger is on the trigger.
And if the finger belongs to old Governor Sundlun
The racoons who know what's good for them will either hide or run.
