Issue of the week: "Morals up in Smoke"
by Seth Brown

America's over-optimistic
That it's best to be capitalistic
But this leads to a belief
That the goal of life, in chief,
Is to earn big dough in ways artistic.

Now we all agree that having cash is nice,
Although sometimes cash comes with a sacrifice.
To get money in our hands,
  We'll ignore all moral stands
And sell our souls before we can think twice.

Tobacco is a drug we all know well,
Thanks to companies that give it a hard sell.
It's a cash crop ages old
That destroys where it is sold,
And Pall-Mall can drive people pell-mell.

These companies have lobbied and gained power,
And due to this, our chance for health seems dour.
When some say it causes cancer
  All the lobbyists just answer,
"We're in charge," and force the congressmen to cower.

With our country's laws in the palm of their hand,
They make ads to help their empire expand.
  Cartoon camels often seen,
  Ads in teenage magazines,
All to cause an increase in children's demand.

These tobacco companies are not content
Spreading death to only our home continent.
  They send poison overseas.
  Causing tumors and disease
For to make a profit is their sole intent.

Foreign kids have t-shirts with a tobacco logo.
We distribute samples at places where kids go.
And to appeal to women there,
  Cigarette ads have much flair,
And gender liberation's what they show.

It almost seems to be a bit insane
That we stop foreign trading of cocaine,
  Yet in our own democracy
  We have a great hypocracy,
When we send cigarettes by ship or plane.

And here's more news if you aren't angered yet,
Consider all the cash those companies get.
  We allocate millions of dollars
To them, and yet nobody hollers,
Even though we are knee-deep in debt
.
So thanks to our efforts abroad,
People there are sufficiently awed.
They'll get cancer in a lung,
But for us it's one more rung,
On the ladder towards cash that we call god.
