Issue of the week: "Run for the Border"
by Seth Brown

America loves to import
Many products from far away ports.
  Be it cars from Japan,
  Or oil from Iran,
Foreign trade is our favorite sport.

But not all these products are good,
Some folks do not import what they should.
  One more recent influx
  That's worth billions of bucks
May decimate our neighborhoods.

The problem is drugs of all kinds,
That harm people's bodies and minds.
  Smuggled in to make dough,
They are shipped to and fro,
So cocaine addicts can do lines.

The situation was stickier than toffee.
When America's drug war took off, we
  Found on the spot
  That Colombian pot
Was not just for Colombian coffee

So Bill Clinton decided this year
That Colombian trade would pay dear,
  Imposed sanctions to bug
  Them, because of the drugs,
But the real problem lies much more near.

Clinton gave Mexico re-approval,
As an ally in our drug-removal.
  He must be on siesta
  To miss the fiesta
Of drugs that goes on just as usual.

Tons of drugs every day cross the border,
Our patrols simply cannot keep order.
  Making tens of miles legal
With three guards and a beagle
Will never catch every drug-hoarder.

The smugglers outnumber the law,
So here's a conclusion we draw:
  Until Clinton takes time
  To strengthen the line,
They'll ignore our rules with a guffaw.

The drug-runners have tricks that work great:
Some have accomplices in the States,
  Or get the drugs there
  Over land, sea, and air,
Hiding in the false bottoms of crates.

As if all of this weren't enough,
To make law enforcement quite tough,
  Smugglers feign honest trade
  That cannot be delayed,
And get rid of the guards with a bluff.

Since NAFTA destroyed the embargo,
Free trade's precedence is a far-go.
  Under most border laws
  Without probable cause,
Officials can't fully search cargo

And even if they do find drugs,
They don't always capture the thugs.
  The culprit speeds off
  Leaving guards there to cough,
While the smuggler escapes and is smug

When the problem becomes this immense,
Only one course of action makes sense.
Stop the dash to make cash
On a stash full of hash
With an upgraded border defense.
