Issue of the week: "Seeing Red"

Long ago, people didn't have freedom
To express all their views as they seed 'em.
If an old government
Disliked someone's intent
They could simply arrest them and beat them.
The United States tried to repair
This tyrannical state of affairs.
Censored speech is unfair
But China doesn't care,
As they showed in Tiananmen Square.
Some students had dreams of democracy
And were crushed by the reigning autocracy.
'Twas a decade ago
Communists dealt a blow:
Tanks were sent to protect the hypocrisy.
China does have its own constitution
But dissent still meets with retribution.
What's a document's value
When a jail still awaits you,
And you sometimes can face execution?
Many students were killed on that day,
As was anyone else in the way.
They were trampled or shot,
Arrested on the spot,
Or beaten and then made to pay.
Communist rule is very dogmatic,
Disallowing all thoughts democratic.
To speak against the state
Is to seal your fate
Often in a manner quite dramatic.
Thus it's not easy when in Beijing
To get help for your freedom fighting.
Those who help are arrested,
And those who protested
Are the next ones in line for arresting.
The Communists try to erase
Evidence that any wrongs took place.
Those who bring up again
The issue of Tiananmen
Find themselves locked up in a tight space.
The new party of Chinese Democracy
Is harassed by the government constantly.
They'll freeze cash without fail
Or just throw you in jail
Simply for being part of the CDP.
Yet despite all the harms of this sort,
Chinese democrats still find support.
Since true democracy
Would make them all more free,
It's worth suffering for what they exhort.
