Well, Thanksgiving's coming up, and we're going to celebrate,
And we're going to eat a meal that will taste really great.
With some turkey and some stuffing and perhaps cranberry sauce,
But in terms of the reality, we're really at a loss.
Things we were taught as truth long ago,
Now it turns out may not quite be so,
Because in terms of origin,
Our conception of Thanksgiving is rather thin.
We were taught way back in school that all the pilgrims had a feast,
And invited all the Indians to join them since they peaced.
So the pilgrims brought the food to honor all their Indian friends,
And that started the tradition that until today extends.
These are the tales on which we were raised,
But now the truth might make you amaized,
In fact those things are merely myth,
So now of reality let's get to the pith.
Well, it doesn't seem so likely that the pilgrims brought the food,
When considering their understanding of the land was crude,
It was probably the Indians who brought the great repast,
And in fact without those Indians the pilgrims could not last.
How could pilgrims get food on their dish,
Until the Indians tought them to fish,
And hunt and plant and use the land,
The winter would have killed them if not for this helping hand.
Now to contemplate the origin of the holiday itself,
There are a couple theories that are lying on the shelf.
The Indians were giving thanks before the pilgrims came,
Which could evidence that Thanksgiving was not a brand new name.
Also before the pilgrims had met
With all the Indians, do not forget
That for some years at harvest time,
They had a celebration very similar in kind.
When considering the facts of which we now have been apprised,
It would seem that some corrections in our thinking are advised.
Thanksgiving probably was started years before we thought,
And in terms of food it was likely the Indians who brought.
But this should not kill our holiday,
We'll celebrate it with no dismay,
Because good food still gives us awe,
And even the Indians liked turkey in the maw.
