Our History

The Zambezi Marimba Band was started in 1992, an outgrowth of the Kusika dance company, who performs dance and drumming and was founded in 1989. The band consists of 6-10 students (depending on the year), and is directed by Ernest Brown, Professor of Music at Williams College. Yearly the band has residencies with Zimbabwean marimba maniac Alport Mhlanga. We play on a set of six marimbas, designed by Professor Brown and assembled by Brown with the help of Buildings and Grounds craftsmen. There are two sopranos, two tenors, one baritone and one base.
Past pieces performed include Chiemtemgure, Ciradza I, Chiradza II, Skokian, Hombe, Jo-cho, Maimbo, Amatoto, La Bamba, and the list goes on....
