It is believed that the second-place General Bumble and third-place Morgasm teams united late in the evening in an attempt to wrest the lead from Buda Bear. They'd certainly joined forces by the following semester, when they won the 5/77 Buda Bear contest.
The General Bumble franchise was originally born of such a scheme back in December of 1973. The #2 and #3 teams ("The General" and "B. Bumble and the Stingers") crafted a come-from-behind merger, narrowing the gap with similar close-but-no-cigar success. In that case too, the double-strength team won the successive contest, playing together from 12:00 on instead of just the final hour or two.
