The Questions

(NOTE: There is an annotated copy of the BOMO '78 contest, on which someone has scripted information and comments pertaining to the on-air delivery of the contest. Many of these jottings give insight into the running of the contest, and we will include these notes along the way.

Some slight explanation is necessary for some of the commentary. For many years, Hour Bonuses were read verbally over WCFM. This was possible because they were generally a handful of short, related questions, or 1 question with a multiple-part answer. There are many examples of such boni nearby in this archive.

Hour Bonuses were worth 5 points, with no sliding scale. In other words, a 6-for-7 was worth zero points. Obviously, there were ways to finagle the phone operators just as today, and a 6-for-7 team would not generally be abandoned by the host team. But you were still expected to get 100% accuracy for credit. It was common for any team, even the winners, to notch a 0 on a bonus or two. In a tight contest, hearing that one's closest competitor had finished the 8th Hour Bonus was the apex of terror.

Therefore, it would usually be announced over the air when a team had successfully gotten the current bonus, to put additional pressure on those teams that had not yet, or would not complete it. Some of the comments herein are such announcements.

The all-or-nothing approach fizzled about the same time when Hour Bonus points were boosted to 10, with 10-to-0 swings being considered too draconian an element to keep.)

(Comment: "1968-- one of the only 4-minute songs to be a Top 40 hit.")

(NOTE: 1967, actually. In an era where formulaic radio formats spooked Elektra Records into shaving 95% of the instrumental break from the Doors' "Light My Fire," and where Iron Butterfly's legendary "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was cut by 14 minutes for single release, few songs dared go much past the 3:00 mark. Psycho producer Phil Spector actually put a false time on the label of one of his longer singles, fearing that no DJ would play it if he knew about the extra 45 seconds. Some of the Righteous Brothers' hits snuck into the upper 3:40s and even 3:50s (gasp!). The first song to hit #1 despite topping 4 minutes was the cowboy ballad "El Paso" in 1960, followed by the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun." But for the most part, drawn-out jams were restricted to the then-second-class FM frequency. Finally, the Beatles' 7:03 "Hey Jude" busted the charts open in the fall of '68. All this is a bit of a diversion from the contest at hand-- but it begins to explain why Trivia of the 70's had so many more questions than those of the 1990's. More about that later.....)

(Comment: Well, not a comment, but there's a thick line of demarcation that leads us to believe that BOMO read 58 questions in the first half of their contest. Fifty-eight questions in 4 hours? A blistering pace, to be sure. But there were fewer extra-curricular elements that running teams had to cram in-- no Ultra Boni, Action Trivia, Action scoring recaps, Audio Boni (& replays), or laborious rule-reading explanations of same. And virtually every song in the Trivia jukebox hovered on one side or the other of 3:00, well into the 1980's. It is a definite that BOMO's first hour included 14 questions; 4 times 14 equals 56. Many 1970's contests appear structured to maintain a pace of about 15 questions per hour, or 120 for the night. There was often more of an emphasis on each hour being a "unit." Some contests (though not this one) divided up the hours amongst their members, who were then responsible for providing that hour's questions, and reading them over WCFM. There was certainly slippage here or there, with the odd (eek!) 13-question hour. But no contest of this era had, say, 94 or 96 questions. The only time-eating features that are no longer present were on-air readings of Hour Boni, and hourly score updates, neither of which took very long. Thus, final question totals were substantially higher. (Conversely, only one contest in the 1990's has surpassed 100 questions, and only at the expense of some of the niceties that today's players have come to enjoy and expect.) The comment after Question #52-- "25 minutes"-- supports the notion that BOMO read Questions #53-58 between 3:35 and 4:00 AM. (Presumably the "25 minutes" was an on-air warning to teams regarding their 3 AM "Animal House" Hour Bonus.) But additional quasi-evidence that the black pen line between Questions #58 and 59 represents the 4 AM break comes at the very end of the question sheets. Questions 114 and 115 originally had no songs listed, but choices were filled in by hand. However, the song slots for Questions #116-118 remain blank. This circumstantial evidence suggests that BOMO may have gotten another 58-ish questions in their second four hours-- but not as many as sixty. However, contradictory data rears its ugly pate, seeming to indicate that Question #97 was read at 7:15. Another nineteen questions in 45 minutes stretches mathematical credulity, even with the traditional headlong rush near the end. (Particularly with few 2:15-type songs to speed things along.) Of course, it's possible that despite the pre-selection of matching songs, Questions #114 and #115 were not gotten to.... or that questions were skipped, so that #'s 114 and 115 might be read. Ultimately, who the hell knows? Oh well, let's start the BOMO contest up again.....)

(Comment: "And now, we're going to a challenge round..... He's Dead Jim.")

(NOTE: "Challenge Trivia" was a long-running contest element that faded from the scene. It hasn't been seen since the early 1980's. Essentially, certain teams (usually the top 5) were given the opportunity to stump the host team with one trivia question of their choosing. Points (usually 0-5) were awarded based on whether the host team was indeed unable to answer, but also on the innate quality of the trivia contained in the question. The strategic decision each team had to make was whether to choose some insanely obscure nugget that was sure to baffle the hosts but engender no goodwill-- or ask a "Wizard of Oz" or "Casablanca" question that was much more gettable but would probably score more brownie points. Obviously, if you could stump the hosts with a "Dr. Strangelove" question, you were sure to get the fullest credit possible.)
