(Bender/Shiny Metal Ass is credited with 25 of 50 points for the first Super Bonus; the actual total is unknown and might be higher or lower.)
It must be acknowledged that the above scores are a useful delusion, like love, patriotism, or the cast of “Glee” having more Billboard chart hits than Elvis and the Beatles combined. However, these are the most plausible totals.
Noumenal Yodelling’s contest had a number of snafus, chief among them their difficulties in keeping score. Some portions of their contest were scored and announced that night. Some were scored by Yodelling in the days that followed. Some will never be scored.
Some teams were only credited with their bonus scores, others were only credited with their on-air point totals. A happy few had both halves fully calculated by Yodelling. The top ten teams for on-air points were read at the end of the broadcast, except that they weren’t the top ten. And some miserable wretches received no points at all, despite having played all aspects of the contest.
Some bonuses were scored down to the third decimal place, but one bonus was rounded off to increments of five. The two Super Bonuses appear to have been scored out of 50 points, and out of 35 points. One of the Hour Bonuses was out of 20 points, rather than 25. Two teams that solved the Ultra Bonus in the 7th hour received 20 points. That’s a record amount of points for that stage of an Ultra; it is unknown how many points an immediate solution would have been worth. Most likely, the same 20 points. The decimal points on most teams' scores add a nice false touch of precision.
It all added up to a big incomplete jigsaw puzzle.
To get the rest of the pieces, representatives of the underscored teams were contacted in the weeks following the contest. Some of them still had copies of their bonus submissions, and some of those could be scored where answer keys were available. Some of them had their IM chat logs, which enabled precise on-air point reclamation. Other teams were obliged to offer up rough estimates of their on-air performances.
Despite the uncertainty, the eternal integrity of Williams Trivia had a powerful protector. The team Requiem for the Blue Civic (first in bonuses, third for on-airs) won by a reassuringly healthy and impregnable margin -- about the 10th-largest in history-- and even the most favorable hypothetical scenario for their opponents would not be enough to change that. The runners-up, Zombies Ate Paul’s Brainz, could have stolen the crown by reporting a 100.0% performance on their on-air trivia performance, but wisely chose honesty instead.
Requiem for the Blue Civic is the Michigan-based team that has been competitive for several years. This is their first win.
The top one-person team was Dom Grillo’s 4th-place Good Grief. The top on-campus team appears to have been Raging Sophists, in 13th place.
Some winning teams of the past played under multiple names to avoid the risk of repeat contention. The combination trifecta of Women Fire Danger, Rodman in Korea, and We Used to Charge Extra would have come in second place with 298.7 points. Similarly, while Yopp! and My Body Is a Callus appear to have been in a spirited battle for 18th place, uniting their scores would have made them the top one-person team (272.375 points, imaginary 5th place).
Further adjustments to these scores will be made if additional data becomes available. WATCH THIS SPACE! (You won’t watch this space.)
