Refused to detain a robber, who later killed his uncle. Realizing that he could have prevented his uncle's murder by acting earlier made him vow to stop all crime.

As boy acrobat Dick Grayson, his parents were killed by gangsters. Grayson was taken in by Batman, and raised as his assistant.
