The Tiny Island of Tonga

Eight hours later, the teams We Begin Bombing in Five Minutes and All The Sugar, Twice the Caffeine ended in a tie, the second-ever. It was quickly decided to pit the 2 squads against each other in a makeshift sudden-death overtime. Each team was given a phone line to establish contact. Five unasked questions were read to both teams at once. Whichever team did best would be declared the winner; in the event of another tie, five more of the Pygmies' unused questions would be asked.

Audio of the tiebreaker

The five questions were:

Q #97-- What was the first name of "Chief" on "Get Smart"?
(A: Thaddeus.)

Q #99-- What are Africa's only three countries ruled by monarchies?
(A: Morocco, Lesotho, and Swaziland.)

Q #102-- What is the only Olympic event in which males and females compete head-to-head?
(A: The equestrian events.)

Q #105-- Hari Seldon of Trantor was a scientist whose greatest contribution to the human race was in one specific discipline. What was that discipline?
(A: Psycho-history.)

Q #117-- According to the Williams College by-laws of 1795, for what three offenses was one charged with the maximum fine of 10 shillings?
(A: Cursing, fornication, and the singing of obscene songs.)

Neither team got the last question correct. Both teams got Thaddeus, equestrian events, and psycho-history. We Begin Bombing correctly identified all three African monarchies. All The Sugar got 2 of the 3 correct, but (oh no!) chose Tonga as the third nation. And so, by one-third of one-fifth of one point, in overtime, We Begin Bombing won the closest contest in history.

The island of Tonga was the subject of much hilarity thereafter. But when the All the Sugar team began winning contests, and continued to include Tonga-based trivia themselves, the practice went from taunting to senseless tradition.

After their heartbreaking loss, All the Sugar turned to the dark side, becoming the mighty trivia entity known as The Evil Empire. And two years later, as Leave the Gun, Take the Cannolis, they would win by the largest margin in trivia history, 65 points. Did that devastating performance ease the pain of Tonga? Only they can say.
