Song: Once You Understand-- Think
(NOTE: While the first official "Horrible Song Quartet" would not come to Trivia until Harry "Snapper" Organs' Winter 1989 contest, Songs #25-28 of this contest oh-so-eminently qualify. All four, er, "tunes" are ineffably grotesque on multiple levels. If you have not heard them, do try not to. In particular, the evil Gary Selinger's back-to-back-to-back trilogy of all-spoken word records (MacGregor, Lundberg and Think) is still recalled with vivid horror and distaste by this contest's survivors, all these years later. The sentiment "We should have done something" seems to sum it up.)

Song: Where Did Our Love Go-- Donnie Elbert
(NOTE: The 1973-76 Chuck Barris game show featured 30 prize boxes, some of which held standard game show prizes, most of which contained crappy joke items (or "clunks"). One, however, held a $25,000 check. Emil Autoure was a respectable-looking foppish gentleman whose entire career (or so we were told) consisted of guarding and monitoring the whereabouts of this check from week to week. (Since they gave away two boxes per week, and contestants occasionally forfeited the box they did select, the check was hardly ever chosen.) Autoure would be shown at intervals throughout the half-hour before box-choosing time, but would never speak or reveal a facial expression. At the climactic moment, host Geoff Edwards would trot the silent Emil out, and solemnly ask him whether he had personally placed the $25,000 check inside one of the thirty boxes. The above was his response. Incidentally, the full name of the game show was "The NEW Treasure Hunt.")

Answer: Someone named Albert Shanker got hold of a nuclear warhead.
Hint: A "who" got a "what"?
Song: Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah-- Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans
(NOTE: A joke that was obtuse to much of the world in 1973 is almost totally obscure now. Albert Shanker was the head of the New York City teachers' union in the late 60's and early 70's; his tenure was marked by remarkable tension and two-way threatening between himself and city officials. A nuclear exchange would have been just a small escalation.)

(NOTE: This was the second time the song "The Americans" was played in this contest. Byron MacGregor's million-selling version was Trivia Song #26. The song was one of those super-patrotic "talking" records over "Battle Hymn of the Republic"-type backing music, and argued why all the nations of the world should gratefully kiss the United States' ass in Macy's window. Both versions wrongly hit the Top 40.)
