An exciting race this time out.
Not much movement below the top two teams, though, with Phasers in third, Dead Emcees 4th, Loose Shoes 5th, and the venerable Manhattan Skyliners coasting on Wave Six from the first score update until the end. And with a big gap between second and third place, it fell to the two behemoths to provide the drama.
Which they did. Chicago 60609 took an early 7-point lead, 108-101. But Round Up The Usual Suspects chipped away in the fourth and fifth hours, picking up 4 and 5 points to take a 153-151 lead. The next hour was a thin one-point advantage for Chicago 60609, but that still left Usual Suspects clinging to a 173-172 margin. However, a big seventh hour returned the Chicagoans to first place by five points, leading to their eventual 8-point win.
The following December, Chicago 60609 would inaugurate the yecchy green trophy that is handed from one winning team to the next and still bears their name.
Phasers on Stun won the first-ever "Lowlife Scum Memorial Trophy" as Best Small Team. (A small team used two or fewer telephones.)
The 11th-place "Phil Walsh's Right Hand" began the night as "Enemas on Stun." As Rule Six put it, after they got bored harassing Phasers, they moved on to bother Phil. As you can see above, harassing Phil Walsh with fake names was a popular hobby in 1984. (Incidentally, the actual Phil could be found on "The Usual Suspects.")
Similarly, the 17th-place "Throbbing Pythons of Love" began the night as "10 to 15 with Good Behavior."
Down in 14th place, The Green Monster is remembered only by Des Devlin; it was his first team. Sadly, half the team was asleep by 2 AM, and the radio was commandeered by a Freshman Quad party, leaving the remaining two players reduced to wandering the dark campus in search of a new team to join.
