COMMENTS:

There was also a "subsidiary" answer key of much less prominent artists and "who?" names, many from overseas. These included Bez, Ceca, Chara, Dana, Jin, and our personal favorite, Unk. Needless to say, some of the teams nailed some of these esoteric performers, too. We'd missed their obscure compatriots Kiki, Lunna, and Mandisa... but we weren't giving extra credit for these guys.

However, there were two legitimate artists whom we did NOT have on our answer key. Yo-Yo-Ma was spotted by Still Holding the Anchovies. (Checking now, days later, I see that there's actually a space between "Ma" and the second "Yo," but come ON. It's Yo-Yo Ma! And come to think of it, there was a female rapper in the early 90s named Yo-Yo, but we all missed her.)

And Strangers in a Strange Land found Rakim. Unfortunately for them, they already had a perfect score!

We think that only four of our one-word artists went unspotted by anybody: the late-90s R&B duo of K-Ci and Jojo (both in the puzzle), rapper Mims, and E, lead singer for the Eels.

One team included "DMC," which had two problems. One, "DMC" isn't in the grid. And two, "Run" WAS in the grid, but they didn't include him! Well, it's like that, and that's the way it is.

Arielle Masters adds:

A comment here, just for the sake of correctness:

"You know the rules. Each artist's name is spelled by starting at the first letter and proceeding vertically, horizontally and/or diagonally, from square to adjacent square. You may return to a letter and reuse it. But you may not stand on a letter to use it twice before moving on."

Actually, those are not the rules for real Boggle. In real Boggle, you can only use each letter (block face that's pointing up) ONCE per word. You can't go back to it later in the same word.

Second paragraph in the "Rules" section.

By the modified rules used in the contest, "BONO," for example, is in the puzzle twice. Under real Boggle rules, it wouldn't be in there at all. Not that it matters for Trivia, but for those of you playing Boggle it's good to know.

and Jared Levine points out:

By the same token, no 1-cube/1-letter/1-character word is acceptable in any version of the game. So, both M and that funky symbol for everyone's favorite hermaphrodite would not be legitimate answers.
