This should eventually become a page about further studies after graduating from Williams, but it is presently just a directory of some universities alums are attending and who is there.

==Directory==

This section is a directory of sorts for where some alumni are now pursuing advanced degrees. Please add your name/institution if you are not on the list, and would like to be here to help new and old friends find you, or current students contact you with questions about your experiences.

'''To edit:''' Please list from oldest Williams class to youngest, alphabetize the names of the universities, the names within a year at a given university, and capitalize the courses of study.
''The Mountains'' is Williams' [http://www.williams.edu/admission/academics_traditions.php#mountains alma mater song]. It was written by Washington Gladden, class of 1859, and still sung today in its original form. Sadly, no one seems to know the second and third verses anymore (not many people really know the first and fourth verses either, for that matter). But everyone knows the catchy chorus.
Unfortunately, I can't find a way to make the layout not suck. It works great on my computer, but the lilypond plugin for MediaWiki sets a ragged right justification which I can't figure out how to override.
The Albany International Airport is the airport of choice for most Williams students. [[Albany]] is only an hour from campus, and her airport has shorter lines than the airports in [[Boston]] or [[New York]], and unlike almost every other airport in the Union, there is always classical music playing in the background.

== Getting to the Albany Airport ==
===Over the mountain===
Do not, I repeat, do ''not'' follow MapQuest.
Start out by going around the Williamstown traffic circle, taking Rt. 7 South. Continue on Rt. 7 for several miles, then proceed to get on Rt. 2 West (towards [[Troy]]). Continue on this for quite a while, until you get past the town of Grafton in New York state. Look out for a sighn for Rt. 278. The turnoff will be after a school and a Stewart's shop. Stop and get ice cream if you like. Continue down all of 278 until you reach Rt. 7. Note the weird steeple of the Gilead Lutheran Church on your right side. Remember it; you'll turn off when you see it onto 278 coming back.

Continue on Rt. 7 for a looong way. You'll go through Troy, then down a large hill. It'll divide towards the base into two different routes. Take the right lane to 787/7. Continue on Rt. 7. back up the valley. At the top, keep to the left and keep going. You'll merge onto Rt. 87 South. Do not go to Latham (that means, do not follow where 7 now goes, or you will end up in Latham. Do not get on 87 north (unless you have a hankering to go to Montreal). Continue on Rt. 87 until you get to exit 4. There should be signs for the airport. Follow them by getting off the highway, turning left at the light, then right at the next light. Continue for about 2 miles, keeping to the right when the highway divides. Follow the signs to your appropriate parking option.

Also, the Albany airport is not in Albany. It is in Colonie. If you find yourself in Albany, get on 787 north until you hit the exit for 7 west.

It should be noted that this is the preferred route for getting to Albany when there is snow on the ground. Snow cleaning is truly horrendous in Vermont and adds significant time to your trip--especially detrimental if you're trying to make your flight.

===Around the mountain===

ALTERNATIVE ROUTE FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT LIKE DRIVING ON ICY ROADS OVER HUGE MOUNTAINS
(aka the Vermont route denigrated above, which most of the time is also just as fast)

Head west on Rt 2 toward the traffic circle, and hang a right onto Rt 7 North. You'll go up 7 North into Vermont, past the car dealerships in Pownal, etc, until you see signs that say "JCT 346."

Take a left onto Rt 346--there is no right turn, so if you miss it, you'll keep going toward Bennington (if you hit the Apple Barn, you've gone way too far). 346 is pretty straightforward--just keep an eye out for the big yellow signs with arrows. There are two places where the pavement goes (more or less) straight but Rt 346 doesn't, so make sure you follow the arrows. You'll take 346 all the way into New York.

Eventually 346 will dead end, and you'll take a right on Rt. 22. You aren't on 22 for long--but fortunately, you can't miss your turn, as this road also dead-ends.

When 22 dead-ends you will be faced with NY 7 (not to be confused with Vermont 7--they are not at all the same road!). Go west--that is, take a left at the light. You'll Rt 7 for quite a while as well. Eventually you will see signs of dense civilization--this is Troy. I suggest buying gas elsewhere, incidentally; it's 20 cents cheaper in Williamstown. Keep going until you get to a large and complicated intersection with two stop lights, one right after the other, and signs for 7, 787, and Downtown Troy.

It is preferable, at this point, to be in the right lane since traffic tends to be heavy. You want to stay on Rt 7, which will become a big divided highway. 787 is not what you want, but getting stuck in the downtown Troy lane is worst of all--all the streets are one-way and you can get lost very quickly.

After that you want 87 South--several miles up Rt 7. It's a left-hand exit.

Once on 87, you want exit 4 or 5--both will get you to the airport via signage. If you've never been there before, note that there are two airports--a municipal one and a big one--and you want the big one, which may not be the first one you see. There will be signs for parking.
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Albany_International_Airport&diff=13870Albany International Airport2007-01-19T21:47:30Z
04bay:

A campus-wide game that takes place during Winter Study, Killing As Organized Sport (KAOS) is a proud Williams tradition (started by [[Danniel Arramini]] '84 and associates) that brings students closer together through the magic of paranoia, assassination, and psychological warfare.

The basic idea of KAOS is simple. Each player receives a weapon and a target to hunt. Annoying constraints such as lawsuits and noise complaints from elderly Williamstown inhabitants prevent us from using actual firearms. These are replaced by silent, non-lethal plastic guns of dubious South-East Asian origin. In any case, each player is being hunted by another player. If you are killed by your hunter, you are out of the game. If you survive and make your kills, you live. Eventually, only one player remains.

==The Game Begins (Almost)==

Registration for KAOS occurs online, but, as with many things at a liberal arts college, if you show up to the weapons depository wanting to play, odds are "it's all good."

Following registration, you will receive information for picking up weaponry (often in a lovely shade of orange for easy findability) as well as information regarding your first target and the rules of the game.

==The Game Begins (Actually)==

The killing commences (yay!) at a time determined by the lord of KAOS, often in the wee hours of the night and/or morning. In essence, "killing" your target consists of hitting your target in the torso (no limb or head shots) with one of several projectile provided along with the weapon: either a small, yellow bullet (speedy and accurate, two great tastes that taste great together) or a more nostalgic orange suction cup dart (slower but easier to spot and recover after shots). Upon killing your target, both parties must report the incident to KAOS Command via email; the victim is out of the game and the victorious assassin is given a new target, presumably the one formerly known as the target of the recently departed player.

The hunted are not without defenses against the hunter, however. If one manages to ascertain which player is trying to eliminate them, the former can shoot in the latter and "stun" them, preventing them from engaging in further aggressive behavior for a fair span of time (12 hours in the case of the 2007 game).

Needless to say, the complete rules are far more technical and complex, and can be found [http://wso.williams.edu here] in their entirety.

==The Death Squad==

As with any system in which young individuals are given weaponry and let loose, there must be a check on their anarchy, and that check is The Death Squad. If any KAOS player fails to eliminate their target within the allotted timespan (48 hours or 72 hours depending on the number of players), their name is placed upon a Death List, at which point their life becomes forfeit. Now, unless they manage to eliminate their target and remain hidden for the next 12 hours, they will be mercilessly tracked and eliminated by an elite force of warriors whose weaponry includes heavy-duty Nerf guns, swords, and, according to some sources, a rocket-powered grenade launcher.

If KAOS Command is made aware of any broken rules on the part of a participant, their name is likewise added to the list. KAOS Command reserves the right to simply remove a player from the game, but except in extreme circumstances prefers to allow them to retain their honor by being slaughtered by a barrage of styrofoam balls.

Oh, and you can't kill members of Death Squad. So don't even try.

==Tactics, Tried and True (or False)==

===Seduction===
A man and women meet at a party. He is immediatly attracted and drops his
guard. At the end of the night, the two leave together. The night is long... but we don't need to go there. He wakes in the morning to the barrel of a gun.

===Claustrophobia===
One hour in a garbage chute is what it took to win KAOS 97. Ventilation shafts are also a good bet (worked in Star Wars).

===Paranoia===
A cautious player never showers in the same place twice. Many won't even
sleep in their own room. Why endanger yourself for bodily functions?

===Tactics for Nonplayers===
Even if you're missing out on firing projectiles at your dearest friends, you can still join in the fun! Merely shouting "BOO!", opening a door, or breathing can cause high-strung active participants to "freak the flip out," much to the amusement of all.

===Invalid Tactics===
No, you're not allowed to use an umbrella as a shield. Live with it.

==Great Tales of KAOS==
In any war, there are heroes, and the war of KAOS is no exception. These are their stories.

===The Interviewer's Gambit===
"I had heard from many sources that my first assignment -- we'll call him 'Roger' -- was going to be nearly impossible to catch. I contemplated just trying to stay alive until the Death Squad inevitably came after me. But then on Sunday I developed the Plan. I heard through a friend that Roger was on the winning Trivia team, so I decided to pose as a Record interviewer despite never having worked for a newspaper or conducted an interview. One friend lent me her miniature tape recorder and another, Ben, who had already been killed, came along posing as the Record photographer. We knocked on Roger's door and suddenly the door next door busted open to reveal Roger pointing his gun straight at us.
'Excuse me, but we're from the Record and were wondering if we could interview you as a member of the winning Trivia team?'
'Oh, you'll have to pardon me, I'm playing KAOS.'
'Oh, don't worry, I understand. I have entrymates who are playing.'
He proceeded to allow Ben and I to enter the room. His roommate was also present. We sat down on the bed and I began to conduct the interview. We had thought up a few questions ahead of time but obviously not enough as not once did he stop twirling his gun around his finger. I kept making up questions, hoping that he would relax enough so I could reach for my own gun jammed in my coat pocket. During the questioning, I only slipped up once, but it could have cost me the kill.
'So what do you find most challenging about KAOS? I mean, Trivia.'
Finally I decided I couldn't question him any longer.
'Crap, the tape just ran out. Hang on just a sec while I change this tape.'
'Oh hey, the captain of the Trivia team lives in the suite across the hall. I'll go get him for you.'
I looked at Ben. The window of opportunity was closing quickly. If the captain entered the room first, there would be too many witnesses. Roger reentered the room and I shot him just as the captain, coincidentally a member of the Death Squad, came around the corner."
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Sean_Hayes&diff=13865Sean Hayes2007-01-19T20:29:35Z
04bay: categorify

As one might expect of a college campus, Williams has lots of books.

==Williams-Published==

[[The Gulielmensian]] is the Williams yearbook.

==Collections==
===Main Libraries===

[[Sawyer Library]] holds the largest collection of books at Williams, and includes most non-science holdings ([[Division I]] and [[Division II|II]]).

[[Schow Science Library]] is the second-largest holding on campus, composed of resources for the sciences (including [[psychology]]).

===Specialty Libraries===

The [[Archives and Special Collections]], or just "The Archives," located on the first floor of [[Stetson Hall]], specializes in materials on Williams history.

The [[Chapin Library]] of Rare Books is the jewel in the Williams library crown, where the most valuable holdings at the college are stored.

The [[Math-Stats Library]] in [[Bronfman]], officially the Dana Towne Library, holds [[mathematics|math]] publications.

The [[Matt Cole Library]] in [[Kellogg House]] holds resources related to [[Environmental Studies]].

The [[1914 Library]] is a special library whose holdings are determined completely by its mission as a lender: 1914 holds and lends books that are used in courses at Williams.

These are not all; here's a list of more [http://www.williams.edu/library/collections.php special-interest libraries].

===Informal Collections===

[[Books You're Welcome to Borrow]] is a list of books that students have and will lend to you.

[[Category:Games]]
Do you have a question that you really want a (funny) answer to? Are you a [[Classics]] major who's always wondered how that chick at Delphi came up with all those wacky predictions? Are you looking for a party game that pleases everyone and can be enjoyed without alcohol?

'''You will need:'''
* At least six players
* A sheet of paper for each player
* A pen for each player.

'''Optional:'''
* A different color pen for each player. Not necessary, especially if everyone knows everyone else's handwritng.

== Rules ==

Everyone sits in a circle.

Everyone writes, at the top of his or her own page, a question that he or she would like to have answered by the Oracle. When everyone has done this, all pass their sheets to the right (if a second game is played, pass left).

The second person receives a question, and must write, on the line below, a semi-reasonable answer to this question. It's best to actually address the question; plenty of humor will come from this game even without intentional non-sequiturs. When all have written their answers, the sheet is folded so that only the last line is readable by the next person. All sheets are then passed in the same direction.

The next person must now write a question that could have produced that answer, and folds his or her sheet likewise, so that only that question is visible to the next writer.

Play proceeds in this fashion, alternating between question- and answer-writing rounds. When a player sees a question, he or she writes an answer. When he or she sees an answer, he or she writes a question. Sometimes it occurs that you are looking at the wrong thing on a given round, because the person before you screwed up. What you do in that situation is really up to you. It doesn't matter.

== End ==

When the last thing on a sheet of paper is an answer, and there is no room for another question and answer, throw it into the middle of the circle. It is done.

Some rounds may pass when not everyone is writing, as some sheets finish before others. This is ok. When all sheets are done, everyone takes a sheet at random from the middle. One player begins reading the sheet in his hands:

"The Oracle was asked . . ." and then reads the top question in the chain. "The Oracle answered . . ." and then the last line, an answer, is read. The reader waits for any laughter to subside, and then rereads the question and reads the whole sheet for everyone's enjoyment.

Then the next person in the circle likewise reads a sheet, and so on, until all have been read.

== Tips ==

Players should reverse the direction of sheet-passing if a second game is desired. This gives you the chance to reply to the writings of the person who was last replying to yours -- also known as getting revenge.

Puns, personal references, and true-to-life answers are all fair game. Couples beware: nothing is sacred.

Don't ask things you don't want answered.

== Trivia ==

Oracle's earliest known introduction to Williams (And vice-versa) was at a Thanksgiving party in the basement of Fitch in the fall of 2003, where one "[[Seth Brown]]" imported the idea from somewhere beyond the boundaries of the [[Purple Bubble]]. Since that day the game's popularity has grown to the point where, in some circles, the distinction of being "the greatest game in the world" belongs not to [[The Greatest Game in the World]]/telepictionary, but to Oracle.

== Variations ==

One common variation calls for each player to read their own oracle aloud, rather than one selected at random. This has a tendency to enhance the potential for irony.

Rhyming Oracle is a favorite among English Majors. In it, each question-answer pair is expected to be in the form of a rhyming couplet. Metrical constraints are rarely considered. It is important that the rhyme be limited to a single question-answer pair, as otherwise it is easy to get unintentional repetition of the rhyming words. It is also possible to play a hybrid game, where rhyming is suggested but not required.

== Examples ==

The following exchanges are excerpts from actual games of Telephone Oracle.
----
"Is that a banana in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

"It's a banana; I stole it from the dining hall."

"Is that a banana in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

"It's a banana."

"Is that a diggeridoo in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

"No, baby, you just make me go Fwoooooo."

'''Troy''' is known to most students as the town one must pass through on [[Route 2]] to get to [[Albany]]. It's a classic Rust Belt, run-down manufacturing town which used to be the Shirt Collar Capital of the World. If you drive through it, you'll see the sign for Troy advertising the town as the "Home of Uncle Sam"; allegedly, a meat packer named Samuel Wilson provided meat to the Army during the War of 1812 in barrels marked "U.S.", and someone suggested that the letters stood for "Uncle Sam". Samuel Wilson's remains are interred at [[Oakwood Cemetery]] in Troy.

A campus-wide game that takes place during Winter Study, Killing As Organized Sport (KAOS) is a proud Williams tradition that brings students closer together through the magic of paranoia, assassination, and psychological warfare.

==The Game Begins (Almost)==

==The Game Begins (Actually)==

==The Death Squad==

===Seduction===
A man and women meet at a party. He is immediatly attracted and drops his
guard. At the end of the night, the two leave together. The night is long... but we don't need to go there. He wakes in the morning to the barrel of a gun.

===Claustrophobia===
One hour in a garbage chute is what it took to win KAOS 97. Ventilation shafts are also a good bet (worked in Star Wars).

===Paranoia===
A cautious player never showers in the same place twice. Many won't even
sleep in their own room. Why endanger yourself for bodily functions?

===Tactics for Nonplayers===
Even if you're missing out on firing projectiles at your dearest friends, you can still join in the fun! Merely shouting "BOO!", opening a door, or breathing can cause high-strung active participants to "freak the flip out," much to the amusement of all.

===Invalid Tactics===
No, you're not allowed to use an umbrella as a shield. Live with it.

==Great Tales of KAOS==
In any war, there are heroes, and the war of KAOS is no exception. These are their stories.

===The Interviewer's Gambit===
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Schnellstiegen&diff=13836Schnellstiegen2007-01-17T02:01:20Z
04bay: spelling

'''Definition'''

The yearly race between the [[Nordic Ski Team]] and [[Alpine Ski Team]] and the [[Men's Varsity Crew]]. It starts on the AT next to the Reservoir and heads first to the top of Mt. Prospect, then down, then up Mt. Williams, then along the ridge up and down over Mt. Fitch and up the final pitch to the summit of Mt. Greylock. To make honor roll and have your time immortalized in stone, men must finish still alive in under 60 min., women in under 76 min. Total climb is about 2,800 ft over about 6 mi. Trail surface is uneven, wet, muddy, stony, and obscured by both leaf litter and snow. At the end you can say you are a school bad ass and then fall over in a quivering heap and puke your guts out. If you're really fit you can go back down a little ways and cheer on the poor suckers who have yet to figure out that the faster you go, the less time you have to spend suffering.

'''Fun Facts'''

It is actully one of the more fun traditions that go on at Williams. It has been run from the very dawn of time, or at least the last 34 years. Only 5 fatalities. Plenty of wounds. A few people get lost and are doomed to wander forever as wraiths on Mt. Greylock.
The [[Berkshire Quad]], more commonly known as the "Odd Quad," is a quad in the southeast part of campus, next to [[Route 2]] and between [[WCMA]] and the [[Spencer Studio Art Building]]. It is surrounded by [[East College]] and [[Fayerweather Hall]] on the west, [[Currier Hall]] and [[Fitch House]] on the east, and [[Prospect House]] on the south, as well as the [[Hopkins Observatory]] on the north, next to [[Route 2]]. All of the dorms are upperclassman dorms, although East and Fay used to be freshman dorms (prior to the start of the 2006-2007 school year).

How the Odd Quad got its name is a mystery shrouded by time. In the 1970s it was known as the Sophomore Quad. Some (e.g., some campus [[tour guide]]s) say the moniker "Odd" arose simply due to having five dormitories (''i.e.'' an odd number). Others suspect it has more to do with the nature of the inhabitants, as the Odd Quad tends to be home to the campus's largest collection of freaks, geeks, nerds, and people who generally consider themselves to part of a Williams subculture of oddness. If you brought a cape to college "just in case," you're likely to fit in well there. (Cape-wearers are still a minority, but a slightly more visible one in this quad than elsewhere on campus.)

Odd Quadders tend to eat their meals in [[Driscoll Dining Hall|Driscoll]], the most convenient [[Dining Halls|dining hall]], located just off the southeast corner of the quad, next to [[Fitch]] and [[Prospect]]. Driscoll was known a few years ago for the [[Driscoll Deviations]], a popular series of [[pranks]] pulled during dinners by a large group of students that named themselves the [[Deviants]], after their own practice.

Some of the best features of the Odd Quad are the [[Currier ballroom]], which features arguably the best (if the most beer-soaked) [[pianos|piano]] on campus outside of the [[Bernhard Music Center|music building]]; the roof of the observatory, which has a truly lovely view; and the perfect-for-snowball-fights [[Eyes sculpture]] located on the western side of East, in front of the [[Williams College Museum of Art]].

The music major at Williams is pretty unorthodox. It has a smaller focus on theory and performing than you might expect, and a larger focus on music history, ethnomusicology, and composition than you might expect. Overall, it's a great department to get your feet wet with a really wide variety of musical activities and to discover what you really enjoy most in music.

Most of the offices and classrooms used by the music department can be found in [[Bernhard Music Center]].

There are seven a cappella groups at Williams, which does not include other [[singing]] groups that may perform many pieces a cappella. Many Williams students have cried that this seems like many for a college of 2000, yet it is [[Amherst]] that claims the nickname of the "singing college" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amherst_College#Amherst_trivia]. Performances can include mid-semester concerts, end-of-semester concerts, reunion concerts, Mountain Day, and more. Far from just being musical groups, a cappella groups are often extremely social.

The seven are:

[[Ephoria]]

[[Accidentals]]

'''Male-only:'''

[[Octet]]

[[Elizabethans]] (co-ed. Contact 07ecb or 08dlr.)

== Traditions ==

Here are some traditions of Williams a cappella in general (specific group traditions are on group pages).

=== Auditions ===

Because of the number of a cappella groups that all wish to recruit primarily freshmen, at around the same time (at the start of the fall, starting with the [[Purple Key Fair]]), auditions for all a cappella groups are usually held in two weeks. Audition times overlap, but applicants choose time slots and are given enough choices that they may try for all the groups they wish.

When applicants to groups are called back to multiple groups, they rank their order of preference of the groups they are trying for. If accepted by multiple groups, this ranking will determine which they join. It is unknown for a person to be a member of more than one a cappella group concurrently. Sometimes, a group will hold auditions again in the middle of the year.

== Songs Groups Should Do ==

Here's what the masses are demanding from Williams a cappella. Add songs it would be cool to hear. If applicable, include what group should do it, who should solo, link to an arrangement, encouraging words, etc.

:'''3 Libras''' by A Perfect Circle. Dunno who should do it, but I've heard it done very well by co-ed groups before (i.e. OTB version [http://www.offthebeat.net/music/clips/OTB11/Three%20Libras.mp3 here]). Doesn't sound like Maynard James Keenan and therefore must never listened to by anyone.
:'''Alcohol''' by Barenaked Ladies. Springstreeters or Octet
:'''Bananaphone''' by Raffi. I could care less, but any group who did this song would officially become my favorite group
:'''Blurry''' by Puddle of Mudd. Any all-male or co-ed group. Listen [http://www.stanfordharmonics.com/albums/shadowplay/blurry.mp3 here]
:'''Bohemian Rhapsody''' by Queen.
:'''Californication''' by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ephlats or GQ
:'''Can't Take My Eyes Off of You''' by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. Octet or Springstreeters.
:'''Chicago''' by Sufjan Stevens. Ephoria or Accies. Performed by the Ephlats [[Spring 2006]].
:'''C'est La Vie''' by B*Witched. Ephoria or Accies, maybe with some Irish dancing.
:'''Do You Love Me?''' by The Hollies. Octet.
:'''Every Woman In The World''' by Air Supply. Co-Ed singers willing to sell it, and backup ready to get very teary. Anything by Air Supply, really, would be a kick.
:'''Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me''' by Tism. Any group, probably co-ed.
:'''Fat Bottom Girls''' by Queen. Springstreeters or Octet.
:'''Freebird''' by Lynyrd Skynyrd, as performed by Phish. Either all-male or mostly male.
:'''Hounds of Love''' by The Futureheads (A Kate Bush cover). Any group.
:'''Just A Friend''' by Biz Markie. Springstreeters or GQ
:'''Lady Marmalade''' (''Moulin Rouge'' version. Elizabethans.) [While it would be interesting if the 'Bethans did this song, it should be noted that the Ephlats performed the "Moulin Rouge" version this fall.]
:'''Last Night''' by The Strokes. Octet or Springstreeters
:'''Love Shack''' by B-52s. It is a sin that no co-ed group seems to have done this yet.
::Actually, GQ did this around '02 or '03. It was awesome.
:'''Me and Mrs. Jones''' by Billy Paul. Octet or Springstreeters
:any and every song by '''Meatloaf'''. Might have to abridge them a little . . . or not. The famous baseball announcer bit in ''Paradise By The Dashboard Light'' is a must-do; co-ed group probably required
:'''Mr. Roboto''' by Styx. It'll never happen, I know.
:'''My Heart Will Go On''' Streeters or Octet.
:'''The Oompa Loompa Song''' from ''Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory''. A co-ed or maloe group making heavy use of falsetto. Maybe best for an intermission or skit piece, due to high repetitiveness, but high comedic potential no matter what.
:'''The Memory Remains''' by Metallica...Metallica? Are you kidding? Actaully, the Stanford Harmonics do a pretty kick-ass rendition [http://www.stanfordharmonics.com/albums/shadowplay/memrem.mp3 here] Are you kidding me? Do you honestly think Metallica wants some douchy a capella group doing their songs? Don't disrespect legends of a genre that already gets too little respect as is. Uh, certain people need to lighten the fuck up.
:'''The Reason''' by Hoobastank. Ephlats or GQ
:'''The Remedy''' by Jason Mraz. Octet or Ephlats
:'''There Must Be An Angel''' Ephoria or Accidentals.
:'''Ultimate Cheeseburger''' by the Meaty Cheesy Boys. Springstreeters or Octet.
:'''We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off To Have A Good Time''' by Jermaine Stewart. Lead's a smoky female voice, so any group/soloist will do, and the lyrics will not disappoint.
:'''[http://www.mit.edu/people/patil/yatta.html Yatta!]''' by Happatai

== Songs Groups Should Never Do/Stop Doing ==

Yeah, maybe that five-minute guitar solo won't ''really'' sound too hot as a human voice ensemble. Here are the songs people want to warn groups away from, for whatever reasons.

In reality, all a cappella songs should be included on this list, because a cappella is a disgrace to music. If there is a hell, anyone who partakes (or has partaked) in a cappella is definitely headed there. I say this as an '08 who is currently in an a cappella group. A cappella caused the genocide in Darfur.

:'''And So It Goes,''' Billy Joel. At least, not strange choppy arrangements.
::Actually, the Tufts Beelzebubs have an amazing version of this song
:::Yeah, they're not whom I was talking about.
:'''Devil Went Down To Georgia,''' Charlie Daniels Band. The fiddle is critical.
::This person obviously has not listened to the Middlebury Dissipated Eight's version of this song. Excellent, fiddle and all.
:::[http://community.middlebury.edu/~eight/outoftheashes.html Heard it.] Unconvinced.
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Brent_Yorgey&diff=13295Brent Yorgey2006-10-29T03:26:42Z
04bay: added link to mathlesstraveled.com

[[Category:How-To]] [[Category:Computers]]
===Know why it's on your computer===

Assuming you have a PC, having Novell on your computer allows you to do some sweet things on the Williams network. For example, it allows access to files in your [[How to access network folders|network folders]], [[printing over the network]], and running programs that would normally cost hundreds of dollars using the [[keyserver]], and connect to other computers on the network to access their shared documents.

Things you don't need Novell for:
*Connecting to the internet
*Sharing music on [[iTunes]]

====If you have a Mac====
If you have [[Mac OS X]], don't install the Netware client. It is very buggy and unstable. Instead, in the Mac OS X Finder, choose "Connect to Server..." from the "Go" menu, or hit Command-K and type in the name of a NetWare server (achilles is the student one). This allows you to connect and browse through to your folder (or anyone else's public folder) and access its contents.

===Know the difference between your Windows password and your Novell password===

When you start your computer, if Novell is installed, a window will pop up that asks you for your user name and password. There is also a little check box that says ''Workstation Only''. If the ''Workstation Only'' box is checked, you will not log onto Novell, and you will only be asked for your personal computer's password. This is the username and password you had on your computer before Novell was ever around. If you didn't have a password before, you don't have one now.

If ''Workstation Only'' is NOT checked, then you ARE logging on to Novell. This username and password is your unix username and password, which is what you would use to check your email or log in to Blackboard. You will still be asked for your workstation (Windows) password, but only after you log on to Novell with the unix name and password.

===Know when to log on to the network===

If you are not at Williams, not connected to a jack by an ethernet cable, or you don't want to use any of the cool network stuff, check ''Workstation Only'' and don't log in to Novell.

If you are using a wireless card, check ''Workstation Only'' when you start your computer. To begin using wireless internet access, simply open up any internet browser, say Yes to the popup message about the security Certificate, and log in to the grey Cisco page with your unix (email/blackboard) name and password. Once you do this you can log into Novell if you want to be on the network. Do this by right clicking on the red N in your Quick Launch toolbar in the lower right corner of your screen and selecting "NetWare Login...".

==Troubleshooting==

'''Problem''': Netware client cannot find the Williams tree or any netware server when it is freshly installed even if a previous installation worked fine and you provide it all the details.

'''Solution''': In the netware client properties (right click on big red N) click on the "Service Location" tab (second tab from the front on the left). In the Scope List field add these two addresses: "nds1.williams.edu" and "nds2.williams.edu" (make sure you press add after typing it into the box). Do the same thing for the directory agent list. Done.
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Brent_Yorgey&diff=13023Brent Yorgey2006-08-24T19:20:04Z
04bay: I'm not a teacher anymore...

[[Image:hole3.JPG|right|thumbnail|a Williams treasure: Taconic Golf Club]]The Williams Men's Golf Team is one of the most successful Division III golf programs in the country and is the 8-time defending Little Three Champion. The team has made the 23-team [[NCAA]] Tournament field 9 of the last 11 years, with its best finish a 10th place showing in 1999. Roster size generally ranges from 10-14 players whose golf games range from scratch to 3 or 4 handicaps. Certainly one of the best perks of making the team is enjoying unlimited playing and practicing privileges at the beautiful [[Taconic Golf Club]].
==Notable Events==

Here are some recent memories of monument and misfortune that will go down in golf team history.

===The 289===

[[Image:nationals2005.jpg|right|thumbnail|A week in Orlando, thanks to the 289]]
Playing in the season-ending District Shootout event at Taconic in late April, 2005, the [[Eph]]s needed a great finish to ensure an invitation to the NCAA field. After a score of 304 on Saturday to put them in 3rd place, on Sunday the team lapped the field with the best single-round score in Williams Golf history - a 289.

Leading the way was junior captain Matt Slovitt, who ran off a string of birdies, including four straight culminating on the 11th hole where he found himself 6-under par. Matt finished the day at 1-under par 70. Sophomore Kevin Kellert finished the front nine with a 32, and was shocked to hear that 3-under wasn't even good enough to be best on the team at that point! Kevin finished with an even-par 71 to share tournament medalist honors with Slovitt. Freshman phenom Nick Ryder played a consistent round of golf, ending with a birdie on 18 for an even-par 71. Junior Will Sirignano rounded out the scoring with a solid 77, making the team total an eye-popping 289 and cementing Williams a spot in Orlando at Nationals.

===The 13-putt===
[[Image:thirteen.jpg|left|thumbnail|Alex Mallory, aka "13"]] The headline of the article following an October, 2003 tournament was "Ephs Fall Victim to Bizarre Course Set-up @ ECAC Championship." However, it was certainly freshman Alex Mallory that bore the brunt of the bizarre course set-up.

The 10th hole at Saratoga Spa golf course is a short, overly narrow par four that ends with the most severe green on the course - a two-tiered surface pitching sharply from back to front. In a ridiculous and controversial decision, the pin on this day was cut almost right into the tier, making it virtually impossible to keep any ball near the hole. With many players struggling to find the elusive hole, backups on the tee reached 5 group waits.

After hitting the green in regulation 2 strokes, Alex proceeded to 13-putt the green for a 15 on the hole. The remaining members of the team four and five-putted, as 3 foot missed putts ended up 30 or more feet away. Certain that this unfair situation would be turned into an automatic 2-putt (as the fourth green was on this day), Alex went on to post a fine 1-over par performance for the other 17 of his holes. However, the tournament director apparently did not see a big enough issue and chose to let the scores stand. Enraged Williams golf coach [[Rick Pohle]] refused to stay for the tournament conclusion and wrote numerous official complaint letters to throw the tournament results out. The effort went unrewarded, and the team's drop from 2nd or 3rd to 9th place in the ECAC championship because of the hole location was a large factor in missing Nationals at the end of the year.

===Stu's Miracle===
Williams' major golf rival is [[Skidmore College]], the other elite program in the Northeast District. One of Skidmore's best players in the last few years has been Stuart Drahota '07, who has become an idol in the eyes of many on the Williams team -- and not only because of his ultra-cool green shoes that read "STU", his winning a tournament by shooting 66 with rental clubs after his were stolen the night before, his very tight relationship with Alex Mallory, or his showing up at Kevin Kellert's 21st birthday party on the Williams campus. [[Image:Stu.jpg|right|thumbnail|STU]]

Stu cemented his godly status with the Wiliams golf team with a single shot on the 18th hole of the Saratoga Spa golf course in the fall of 2004. Playing with Williams freshman Brendan "Lapdog" Conley, Stu missed a 2-foot putt by an inch on the 17th hole and proceeded to show the only flash of anger he has ever had on the golf course, slamming his putter into his foot and bending it.

After using the broken putter to tap in, Stu and Lapdog went to the 18th. As they were playing in the #1 position, they had teed off last and were set to finish the 18th with the rest of the field and coaches ringing the green. Of course, this was going to get interesting as Stu could not use his bent putter, as it is against the rules to do so. "What club would Stu use to putt?", thought Lapdog, as they walked up the fairway. "His wedge? His driver?" With no putter available, Stu, however, found the best solution. Approaching the green from 150 yards out, Stu swung a 9-iron that sent the ball onto the green, hopping toward the pin, and amazingly, going in the hole for an eagle 2! Stu never needed to putt. Stu is a golf god.

==Team traditions==

===Spring break===
[[Image:Mihmsicks.jpg|right|thumbnail|Will Sicks '03 and Dave Mihm '03 lead the cheers in Salem, VA]]The highlight of the golf team's season is an annual 2-week [[spring break]] trip to Florida. Most players make the long drive down the East Coast, leaving campus after classes end on the Friday before break begins and arriving in Florida on Sunday. In 2003 and 2004, the trip down fortunately coincided with the Williams Men's [[Basketball]] Team's appearance in the Final Four the same weekend in Salem, Virginia. Thus both spring breaks began on high notes, as the golfers witnessed Williams winning the championship on last second free throws in 2003, and beating rival Amherst in a heated semi-final matchup in 2004. The 24-hour ride down - as the temperature creeps up, the windows slowly get rolled down, and the beats of Rap Classics blare into the warm Carolina air - is the perfect kickoff to two amazing weeks. On the flip side, the long ride back to Williamstown, driving through the night toward the spring's cold rain and sleet, can be a depressing 24 hours.

The team goes to improve their golf and [[beirut]] skills. Detailed statistics for golf (fairways, greens in regulation, putts, sand saves, and penalty strokes) and beirut (cups hit, wal-marts, last cup hit, quotes) are meticulously recorded.

[[Image:john.jpg|left|thumbnail|John Kildahl in the midst of perhaps the greatest beirut performance of all time]]In 2004 and 2005, Zach "Uncle Th" McArthur wrote up comprehensive reports, complete with color pictures, that totaled over 100 pages containing every game of beirut played over break. From the statistics, it is clear that golf skill and beirut skill do not tend to overlap. As one increases, the other, as sad as it may be, declines. An inverse relationship ''per se'', or whatever. This is especially clear in the cases of Matt Slovitt and Kevin Kellert, clearly the two best golfers on the team, and even more clearly, the two worst beirut partners on the team.

Coach Pohle appears to schedule the golf tee times so that the team's hangovers (and his own) wear off before the first ball is hit. Often playing at 1pm, and of course, ALWAYS with a cart, the team's golf is consistently awful over break. Rounds of 100 are not uncommon. It took Zach McArthur 30 rounds on Spring Break before he broke 80 in his last one - shooting 78 and losing to Coach Pohle by a shot on the final hole.

Some of the better courses hacked up by the team are "Not So" Grand Harbor's River course (nickname by Ned Wydysh '04...), Hawk's Nest, BallenIsles, PGA Golf Club's Dye course, and the McArthur Club. The worst course played is certainly Sand Ridge - "off to Sand Crotch again," says Ned at the beginning of every Spring Break.

[[Image:111kevbo.jpg|right|thumbnail|Kevbo with adoring Bennigan's waitress Pam]]From each day's golf course, the team generally has gone directly to dinner at a variety of chain restaurants: TGIF, Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, and the like. The greasy food and large Brutus beers provide a perfect start to most nights. One burgeoning tradition is to visit Bennigan's one time during break; Bennigan's offers the "Monte Cristo" - two deep fried ham, turkey, and cheese sandwiches served with powdered sugar and raspberry jam. Kevin Kellert, challenged by the team to do so, ordered and ate TWO orders of Monte Cristos in 2004. This feat won him five dollars from the waitress, who had never seen anything like it done before.

Housing on Spring Break has varied quite a bit in recent years. 2003 and 2004 were spent in one of the grossest Motel 6's in the world, where dogs ran wild, some rooms appeared to contain entire extended families, a prostitute wanted to smoke up with Ned Wydysh and Bryan Harmon '04, and Matt Slovitt used the parking lot as his personal urinal. In 2005, after getting kicked out of Motel 6 (maybe it was the plywood thrown in the pool, BH?), Rick Pohle hooked the team up with 2 condos overlooking the PGA Golf Club. It was paradise. Night golf on the par-3 course out back was common and more beirut was played than ever before. In 2006, it was a slight step down to a hotel setup -- neighboring guests in the hallway apparently kept wondering why the boys next door played so much ping-pong late at night... [[Image:woogie.jpg|center|thumbnail|night practice]]

===The Olde Forge===
[[Image:forge.jpg|left|thumbnail|"12 original"]][[Image:Bhmiked.jpg|right|thumbnail|BH revels in getting his wings before Mike D]]Discovered" by Ned Wydysh for his birthday on [[Valentine's Day]], 2003, going to [[Restaurants#Ye_Olde_Forge|The Forge]] quickly became a weekly staple for the golf team. As the 2003-2004 school year rolled around, senior captains Ned (3 beer cards) and BH (0 beer cards, only drinks Coors Light and Foster's) made going to the Forge at least as important as playing golf for members of the team.

The amazing wings and good beer fueled the team's mediocre play week in and week out. Ned, BH, Zach McArthur (3 beer cards), John Kildahl (almost 4 beer cards), Matt "Philip" Slovitt (almost 4 beer cards), and non-golfer Jon Russell '06 (3 beer cards) made up the core of the weekly group. As younger members of the team learned of this tradition, they became important participants, mostly as designated drivers. In particular, Brendan "Lapdog" Conley '08 (2 beer cards!) served this role well, sacrificing gaining the [[freshman 15]] (or 25) in exchange for wings every week. The year 2005 saw Irish Carbombs become a staple final drink during Forge visits. One magical night, Kurt Brumme, sitting at an adjacent table (with mostly [[Swim Team]]-ers), stealthily bought the entire golf table a round of bombs. Just about a year later, on May 4, 2006, Kevin Kellert demonstrated his leadership and commitment to the Williams Golf Team tradition by completing his first [[Irish Carbomb]]. It is [[Zachary McArthur|this author]]'s hope that the Forge remains alive in the Williams Golf family as long as possible.

===Bob Seger===
[[Image:bobseger.jpg|right|thumbnail|Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band]]
The beginning of the love affair between the Williams Golf Team and the music of Bob Seger was when Will Sicks '03 and John Kildahl '06 picked up a Seger tape at a gas station on [[#Spring break|Spring Break]] 2003. Seger was the preferred music of that entire break at Motel 6, and by the end of it, the entire team knew the words to his Greatest Hits. Many CDs were burned, Seger was played at every golf event and car ride to and from the Forge, and every time you heard him you thought of Spring Break and a smile came to your face. Bob Seger has remained as a presence at all golf team social functions. "We've Got Tonight" will be played at many a golf teamer's wedding in the distant future.

===Rap Classics===

[[Image:Notorious.jpg|left|thumbnail|Blankenheimer's alter ego]]A mix put together by Bryan Harmon '04 and Matthew Slovitt '06 in Mission, 2003. The CD spread like wildfire around campus and is THE party mix for the golf team. It is composed of the following songs:

"This is How We Do It"- Montell Jordan
"I Wish"- Skee-Lo
"Remix to Ignition"- R. Kelly
"Regulators"- Warren G

With not enough room to include every Rap Classic on the original mix, BH and Slops made a second mix that proved as popular as the first. This CD was called "Rap Classics: The Next Episode" and includes:

...?

"Juicy" has arguably become the most popular Rap Classic, outshining the rest due to performances of it by Adam Blankenheimer '04 (a close friend of Ned, BH, and Mike D). A fairly short, white, Jewish kid, Adam regularly raps "Juicy" for the golf teamers with an intensity and passion that has made it the climax of the Rap Classics mix.

===Halftime Putting Contest===
At the halftime of the [[homecoming]] [[football]] game, the team gathers at (stumbles to) Taconic for a putting contest. Anyone not completely inebriated (Kevin, hrmph) should not participate. Recent winners have included Matt Slovitt in 2003, despite falling over on several of his putts, Brendan Conley in 2004, his decisive victory capping off a fantastic fall with the flatstick, and Kurt Brumme in 2005, who sank the winning 40-footer with a BAC of... a lot.

Talking wasted with Coach Pohle is not required, though it seems to happen every year and end poorly every time. "Enjoy the second half."

===Broomball===
The men's golf team has won the last two contested college [[winter study]] IM [[broomball]] championships.

In '''2004''', Bryan Harmon '04 scored every regular season goal for the team, capping his incredible one-man show with a key late-game breakaway backhand goal over Choir goalie Dan Krass's shoulder to send the team into the playoffs. Once in the playoffs, Zach McArthur '05 took over, scoring every post-season goal, including an early-game rifle from the blue line that won the championship 1-0 over the very cheer-happy [[Fayerweather|Fay]] 2 squad. Ned Wydysh '04 was a rock in goal, allowing but one regulation goal all year and stuffing Rugby time and again in an exciting semi-final playoff shootout.

As for '''2005''', despite losing Wydysh and Harmon, the team had a regular season probably unmatched in broomball history. With the new varsity [[women's golf team]] providing support, the bench was long, every game was a blowout, and even Kevin Kellert '07 scored a goal. However, Director of Athletics [[Harry Sheehy]] canceled the playoffs due to concerns that the ice was getting dirty from sneakers. It was a sad end to a dominant January on the ice.

In '''2006''', two new team members stepped up as rising stars to successfully defend the broomball crown. Tim Evans '06 and Matt Felser '09 took advantage of playing the regular season half-ice as the team went undefeated. In the playoffs, the team coasted through until the championship, when they had to play shorthanded the whole game, and with Kevin on the ice to boot! Despite basically playing 2-men down the entire contest, the golf team triumphed once again for their second straight playoff crown. This could not have been done, of course, without the help and amazing skills of newcomer, Stacey "a stud on the ice" Baradit. Gray T-shirts with a purple & gold argyle design on the front and "Kevin's always watching" on the back commemorate the golf team's broomball success.

''This is a draft of a policy being worked on by the [[Willipedia board]]. It has no effect until approved by board consensus.''

Titles of articles in Willipedia are chosen to serve two crucial goals which are sometimes at odds.
#Titles [[Willipedia:Policies#Article_Titles_are_a_Promise_._._.|create expectations]], and therefore a title ought to accurately reflect the content that follows it.
#But, on Willipedia, titles are the names that articles are called by. If titles are not succinct, they will never be linked to, and will fall into obscurity.

'''For an example,''' consider the old article, "How To Procrastinate." This was the first title it had, and it did a good job of creating the expectation of a list of suggestions, which is indeed what the article was. But suppose that someone who doesn't know about this article is writing a related article; his prose is much more likely to contain (and so more likely to link to) the word "procrastination" or "procrastinating" than the full phrase "how to procrastinate." Thus the article is currently called [[procrastinating]].

The set of naming conventions below arises from this need for a minimal set of rules for editors to learn so we know how to best name our new articles, and how to link to existing content (or future content) as we write body text.

==General guideline==
If you want to write an article on something rather specific, make sure that it is accessible from related, more general topics. You can do this in one of two ways:
* Link to your specific article from the more general article
* Include the content of your would-be article in the more general article

Often this means you'll need to create a perfunctory article or introduction for the more general topic, but the benefit is that people who search for the general topic will also be able to find your article.

'''Illustrative examples:'''

''Problem:'' You want to write about how awesome the beech in the [[Forest Garden]] is for [[tree-climbing]].
:''A good start:'' Even though you just want to write about that one tree, start/edit the article "Tree climbing," and place what you write in a section of it. If you want to do a really good job, go the extra mile to start a preface on the general title to help other editors get an idea of where they can work from.

:''In the future:'' Even without a preface, it's a very good bet that others will expand on this subject, with more trees and perhaps a guide to history and technique of the pasttime.

''Problem:'' You want to give advice on procrastinating on a thesis. You're thinking "How to procrastinate on a thesis" might be a good title.
:''A good start:'' Think about your topic in the general sense. You are talking about two things: the practice of [[procrastinating]] and the topic "[[thesis]]." Start/edit an article with either name, and include what you want to write in a well-named section, even if it is a lonely section at first.

:''In the future:'' Others are likely to have something to say about "Procrastinating" or "Thesis". The articles are likely to cross-link. Over time, what you started will evolve into a rich article.

==Tools==

Willipedia depends on things being where people expect them to be. The MediaWiki software contains a few key tools that make this easy to do, and you can help Willipedia out a lot by learning them.

===Redirects===

A redirect page is a page whose only function is to send anyone visiting that page to a page by a different name. Redirects are incredibly important, and everyone should learn how to make one.

Using a redirect, a link to [[Bethans]] will go to [[Elizabethans]]. The former is a common colloquial form likely to crop up in articles, but the latter is the only reasonable title for the article. To prevent editors from accidentally writing two pages about the same thing, redirects are crucial.

'''Making a redirect.''' Let's say we want to make "WUFO" point to "Williams Ultimate Frisbee Organization". Start a new page having the name that you want to become a redirect -- in this case, [[WUFO]]. Make its content

<nowiki>#redirect [[REDIRECT_TARGET]]</nowiki>

where <nowiki>[[REDIRECT_TARGET]]</nowiki> is the name of the article you want to go to -- in this case, "[[Williams Ultimate Frisbee Organization]]".

'''Make redirects often.''' Any time you think of a term that people often use to name something else, and that term only names that one thing, make the page a redirect. WUFO can only refer to the frisbee club, so it's a great redirect. Furthermore, any time you were deciding between a few choices for a new article title (class or classes? skiing or alpine skiing?) it's usually a great idea to make the title you didn't use a redirect to the one you did use.

Sometimes, though, a word has more than one meaning. "Hopkins," unfortunately, is both the administrative hall and the dormitory. The page [[Hopkins]], then, needs to be a [[#Disambiguation pages|disambiguation page]].

===Disambiguation pages===

A disambiguation page is a page whose sole function is to provide access to the two or more meanings that one word or phrase has, such as [[Spencer]] and [[Weston]]. The page content can be anything that helps readers find their way to the right place, so long as the page has a link to every reasonable interpretation. It also should begin with the code <nowiki>{{disambig}}</nowiki>. This tags the page as a disambiguation page.

===Renaming (moving) a page===

To rename a page so that its title conforms to these guidelines, move it using the "Move this page" link at the bottom of the screen. When you move a page, the program automatically creates a [[#Redirects|redirect]] at the old location that points to the new location.

It is not a big deal, but it is good form, when you move a page, to fix all the links in Willipedia that pointed to the old name. If you move a young page, this is often a short job, and a nice thing to do. If you move an old page, it can have dozens of links to it, making this job very annoying. No one will fault you for not wanting to go and do all that work yourself, but consider leaving a message for the [[Willipedia board]] letting us know we ought to look into it.

==Conventions==

Effort is wasted when someone starts an article "Prank" when it really could have been added to (or already was in) "[[Pranks]]". Using naming conventions lets us use content to its fullest extent, and build on what's there already. Much of the below is adapted from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions Wikipedia's naming conventions].

===Singular vs. Plural nouns vs. Gerunds===

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Prefer_singular_nouns ''Wikipedia origin'']

'''Use a singular noun''' for articles that:
* Explain or define a subject, e.g. [[crusty]]
* Give the history of a subject, e.g. [[Mountain Day]]

'''Use a plural noun''' for articles that:
* Provide a topical survey, e.g. [[restaurants]]

'''Use a gerund (-ing word)''' for articles that:
* Explain how to do something, e.g. [[configuring an email client]]
* List ''techniques'' for achieving particular goal, e.g. [[procrastinating]], [[skiing cheaply]]

Often you'll want to redirect from the other possible article names. For example, "beer" and "beers" should probably go to the same article, but make the appropriate choice for the primary article ([[beers]]). See [[#Redirects|Redirects]] for more information.

===Sentence-style capitalization===

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Lowercase_second_and_subsequent_words ''Wikipedia origin'']

Even though the title of something, like an encyclopedia article, typically has all words capitalized, Willipedia is different. Capitalize article and section titles as though you were writing a sentence: the first word is capitalized, and all other words are lowercase unless they are proper nouns.

===Naming students and alums===

Even though it is convention in most Williams publications to include the class year whenever a student or alum is named, on Willipedia, the class year should usually not be part of the title of a page on a person (''ie'', "Joe Freshman" is preferred to "Joe Freshman '09"). This is for ease of linking: in this system, an editor who wishes to link to a person need only know his/her name. If class years were in titles, one would need to know name ''and'' graduation year to link. You can still, of course, include the class year in your prose, e.g. "<nowiki>[[Joe Freshman]]</nowiki> '09".

===Use full names to be unambiguous===

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Be_precise_when_necessary ''Wikipedia origin'']

Another common issue for Willipedia is that we have a lot of things named after people (namely, [[:Category:Building|buildings]]). This creates a need to resolve ambiguity about whether "Hopkins" is an article about [[Hopkins Hall]], [[Mark Hopkins House]], or [[Mark Hopkins]] the person.

The solution in most cases is to use the full name of something, even if it is rare in common parlance. So while it is typical to say, "I'm eating at Mission," the article on this would have to be "[[Mission Dining Hall]]". Notice that all words in this title are capitalized, as it is the proper name of the place.

If you're feeling very helpful, create a [[#Disambiguation pages|disambiguation page]] at the common name that forks to many related pages. The [[Spencer]] and [[Dodd]] pages are examples of these.
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Willipedia:Naming_conventions&diff=11621Willipedia:Naming conventions2006-05-09T10:18:56Z
04bay: spelling

==General guideline==

'''Cassanova:''' A couple slices of turkey, some goat cheese, a little cranberry sauce, onion and a slice or two of fresh tomato in a potato onion roll spread with some Thousand Island, paninied to browned goodness. Greylock lunch only.

'''Mud and Leaves:''' Two pieces of thick multigrain bread, two spoonfuls of chunky natural peanut butter, raw spinach leaves, and a bit of honey. Beware of eating in front of culinarily conservative friends.

'''The Nugwich''': A hamburger bun, two fried chicken tenders (NOT buffalo tenders), a slice of tomato, and a dollop of ranch dressing. It will take you back to Tennessee.

'''Sorta Reuben''': Spread Thousand Island on white bread; add cold roast beef from the deli bar, two slices of American cheese, and coleslaw. Delicious. Can definitely be made in Greylock during lunch; other places might not have the coleslaw.

'''Humwich''': Take a pita pocket, heat it up in a panini grill or toaster; fill with hummus, some goat cheese, cucumber, peppers, onions, and any other veggies you like. Fold, and serve with ranch dressing on the side for dipping. Can be made in most dining halls most of the time; can also be accomplished at the snackbar (order the Veggie Pocket with hummus, ask the nice lady at the counter for a container of salad dressing).
'''Aunt Vicky's BBQ Beef Brisket:''' Making its first appearances at [[Driscoll]] in [[Fall 2004]] (avilable there only?), this is a hot roast beef melt distinguished by the fried onions topping that you can only get on a dining services hot line. Served on a roll, and guaranteed to put you to sleep in your 1:10 lecture.

'''The Rachel:''' This gooey vegetarian alternative to the Reuben is known only at [[Dodd]] or [[Mission Dining Hall]]. Instead of corned beef, there is a single large portabello mushroom cap. Everything else remains the same.

'''Egg McWilliams:''' A fried egg, a sausage patty, a slice of white American cheese and no regrets make this fairly greasy Williams classic, formerly served on an English muffin as a mainstay at the dearly departed and much beloved old [[Snack Bar]]; an occassional treat at brunch, where they let you build your own.

''The Ode to Williams started out as just a poem. Here it is, though it is now somewhat redundant to the above.''

:Here I am -- I go to Williams: land of mountains, fields, and trees,
:Where the smog and smoke of cities never interrupts the breeze;
:Where our uniforms are purple and we proudly sport the cow;
:Where for discussions, nineteen is the most that they allow;
:Where my lecture class is fifty; my professor knows my name,
:And everyone I meet seems genuinely glad they came.

:Williams -- I go to Williams!
:I go to Williams!

Apparently, numerous members of the Williams community have taken it upon themselves to learn this catchy bit of verse.
==About==
The Ode to Williams is a subset of the [[Ode to Harvard]] by [[Diana Davis '07]], written in her freshman fall of 2003. There is a .wav version of this ode being performed [http://wso.williams.edu/~ddavis/williams.wav here].
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Willipedia:FAQ&diff=8923Willipedia:FAQ2006-03-16T20:30:05Z
04bay: major rewrites: style, formatting, some answers were confusing

'''How do I ask questions about Willipedia that aren't listed here?'''

Email
to contact the [[Willipedia board]], which will answer your question promptly and may place it here. Alternately, you may add your question to this page if you think seeing the answer is in the interest of the public, and the board or another user may answer it.

==General questions==

'''How do I add a page?'''

To add a page, you must first create a link to it from another page. Edit the page which will link to your new page, and put in something about the page you want to add, including its exact title enclosed in double square brackets,
<nowiki>[[like this]]</nowiki>
. Click "Save page" at the bottom, and you will see a link to your new page included on the existing page. This link will be red, since the new page does not yet exist. Clicking on it will allow you to create your new page.

In general, before creating a new page, you should search the wiki for the term you want to be the title of your page; if it already exists, there's no need to recreate it. You can simply make a link to it by putting the name of the page in double square brackets.

'''How do I delete a page?'''

You don't. You can edit a page, you can even delete all the text on a page, but normal users cannot actually delete a page. The reason for this restriction is that deleting a page removes all of that page's edit history, which makes reversion or further improvement of that page impossible. Where possible, you should try to improve pages rather than annihilate them in this way. Currently, only members of the [[Wiki_board|Willipedia board]] have the power to delete, and use it sparingly. If you think a page should be deleted, you can delete all the text on the page and put the word delete within two sets of curly brackets, like this:
<nowiki>{{delete}}</nowiki>
.

==Formatting questions==

'''I left lines between paragraphs of text, but my text is showing up as one big block. How do I fix it?'''

To make the wiki recognize single carraige returns, preface each paragraph (or each line, in a poem) with a colon, like this :Hi.

'''How do I make something bold or italicized?'''

Italicized text has two single quotes (
'
) on either side of it,
<nowiki>''like this''</nowiki>
. Bold text has three quotes on each side.

'''How do I offset a block of text, like a long quotation from another source?'''

At the beginning of the text block, put
<nowiki>
</nowiki>
. At the end, put
<nowiki>
</nowiki>
. If the text block has multiple paragraphs, do this for each paragraph, or use colons as described above.

'''What if I want to format something and the answer isn't here?'''

Go to a page that has the formatting you want, click on "Edit page," and see how it works there. Then click "back" so you don't change anything about the page. If you think many people would like to know the answer, add it to this section.
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:Fist_pounds&diff=8914Talk:Fist pounds2006-03-16T17:45:45Z
04bay: I stand corrected

Does this page have anything at all to do with Williams? It appears to be simply copied from the uncyclopedia article. --[[User:04bay|Brent]] 12:25, 15 March 2006 (EST)

Actually, if you check the dates, you'll see that the uncyclopedia article is copied from here. The Fist Pound is an important cultural institution here at Williams. Also, you might notice some familiar faces in the video. --[[User:06emm|06emm]] 13:16, 15 March 2006 (EST)
Ah. Well, in that case I stand corrected. Uh... let them eat poundcake. =) --[[User:04bay|Brent]] 12:45, 16 March 2006 (EST)
04bayhttps://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Willipedia:FAQ&diff=8910Willipedia:FAQ2006-03-16T15:04:19Z
04bay: fix minor typo
