Welcome, or welcome back, to the best quad on campus, Cougars! This wiki is here to help make room draw less stressful for all of us - let others know how big your group is and where you're looking to pick into!

Some ground rules: no intimidation of other groups (such as "if we don't get into Fitch third floor, we'll harass whoever lives there all year") is allowed; if you do that, you could get kicked to the end of the room draw. Also, please don't post anything during the actual room draw or from the room draw locations, as that is also not allowed.

Protip: putting your class year rather than your class title ("'12" rather than "junior") might make things clearer since the distinction between current year and rising year could create confusion.

Happy hunting!

See CC Fall 2006 picture

Responsibilities
College Council's three most important functions are:

*Giving students a voice on campus issues.
*Responsibly and fairly funding over 150 student groups and various campus events.
*Providing a starting point for student initiatives to improve the campus or college programs.

CC also appoints all students to the student faculty committees. These selections take place in the middle of the spring semester. For a list of committees, see the CC website's list of committees. For students interested in applying for committee positions, please read the guide for writing a good self-nom.

Elections
College Council elections for the Spring 2008 term will occur February 14-15.
Results are available at: College Council Spring 2008 Election Results, College Council Spring 2009 Election Results and College Council Election Results

Running
Self-nominations will be due February 7; they can be sent to ephelections (at) gmail. The campaign period will be from February 8 to February 15, when the election period itself will end. The officerships, year-long offices, and semester offices are all up for grabs in Spring elections.

Voting
The election will be conducted using the BigPulse electronic election system.

*Everyone will receive a link to his/her electronic ballot via his/her Williams.edu email address.
*This election will use Instant Runoff Voting (IRV). This means that in races with more than two candidates, voters will be asked to order the candidates by preference.
**If any candidate gets more than 50% of the first-choice votes, that candidate wins.
**If no candidate gets more than 50% of the first-choice votes, the first-choice votes that went to the candidate who did worst will be reallocated to their second choices. This process will repeat until a candidate has won with more than 50% of the vote.

Projects
College Council works on projects suggested by the representatives or members of their constituencies, and has assisted in the success of such projects as bringing Ephporium to Spring Street and the Motorcoach service.
Some Recent Projects
* In the spring of 2006 College Council reps accomplished the projects listed here: Stuff CC has done.
* In the spring of 2007, the newly elected College Council Treasurer wrote and distributed the Nurnberg Funding guide to inform all students about the funding sources available at Williams, the most effective methods for requesting money, and how to use the college's voucher, peoplesoft and purchasing card systems. That guide can be found here.

Successful Projects
* In the spring and fall of 2008, College Council undertook numerous small and large projects. The most expansive project undertaken by that College Council was the College Council initiated Permanent Textbook Reserve Program.
* In the Spring of 2008, College Council worked with members of StandWithUS and other interested parties to create and launch the Committee on Community Interactions (CCI). Here is the Committee on Community Interactions Mandate. The reporting guidelines and deadlines in the mandate were amended at future CC meetings. The CCI's meeting minutes and current representatives can be found here.
* In the Fall of 2008, College Council created a Subcommittee to craft a proposal for a Sophomore Orientation Program. That Subcommittee is currently working on making that proposal a reality. The proposal can be found here: College Council Sophomore Orientation Proposal
*In the Fall of 2008, College Council also established the Facilities Director Committee. This committee meets monthly with the three directors of facilities to provide a space where students can know what changes are being made in the future, while also providing feedback and concerns that are brought to them by their constituents.
* In the fall of 2008, College Council created an All Campus Social Calendar to inform the student body about events on campus and help organizations in their planning processes. Click here to view the calendar. See the All-Campus Social Calendar willipedia page for information about how to post an event on the calendar or subscribe to the calendar managers weekly upcoming events email.
* During winter study 2009, College Council brought back the snow sculpture competition. See the Snow Sculpture Competition willipedia page for more information about that competition and pictures of the entries.
* To improve communications between CC and student groups and ensure that all students groups know that CC is dedicated to supporting them, interested in advocating on their behalf and determined to address issues important to them, CC created the CC liaison program in the Spring of 2008 and continued the program in the Fall of 2008. Through this program, all CC members were assigned to be a liaison to a few large student groups. Each liaison is responsible to making contact with the groups he or she represents and determining the best way to foster good communication and effective collaboration between CC and the group the liaison is responsible for representing. Suggested methods of contact include meeting with the groups leadership a few times a semester or attending the groups meetings a few times a semester.
* In the Spring and Fall of 2008, College Council worked with the Office of Campus Life and Neighborhood Governance Boards to improve the neighborhood transfer process. Aiming to increase the fairness of the process, make the process more objective, improve the chances that students are able to live with their friends, and add additional student choice to the system, CC the Office of Campus Life and the Neighborhood governance boards created a new transfer system to be implemented beginning in the Spring of 2009. The details of that proposal and new policy can be found on the Neighborhood Transfer Process page.
* In the Spring and Fall of 2008, CC worked with members of the senior staffincluding the Provost, Dean of the Faculty and Dean of the Collegeto improve the colleges support for club sports teams, ensure that club sport coaches received fair salaries that were annually adjusted for cost of living changes, and create a formal and fair process for approving and recognizing new club sport teams. As part of this process, the senior staff and CC officially defined categories of club sports teams and outlined the support provided by the college to each category of team. See the willipedia page on Club Sports Policies for the result of this work.
* Book Drive for the 1914 Library: At the end of the Fall 2008 semester, CC organized a book drive and collected 71 books from students to be donated to the 1914 library.
* 101 Things You Wish You Knew: CC created this guide to distribute to incoming freshmen over the summer. The book is designed to share useful information that students pick up during their years at Williams.
* College Council Liason to Mass MOCA: CC created a liaison position to increase student usage of Mass MOCA.
* Ready-Made Lunches (evolution of lunch equivalency): Working with Dining Services, CC created a new lunch option for students with scheduling conflicts. With this program, students can arrange to pick up lunch between 2pm and 4pm on weekdays.
* Computers in Goodrich and second cash to card machine in Paresky: CC arranged for computers to be put in Goodrich and worked with Dining Services to install a second cash to card machine in Paresky.
* Faculty / Staff / Administrator Awards: CC revived the tradition of annually presenting awards to staff, faculty, and administrators who demonstrate a commitment to the student body.
* Formalizing the Lyceum Program: To ensure the continuation and smooth operation of the Lyceum program, CC created a formal procedure for selecting, setting guidelines for, overseeing and training the Lyceum managers. The managers will now be selected in the spring appointments process.
* Reforming the Student Group Approval Process: To ensure the fairness of the process, CC now gives all prospective groups hearings before the full CC. Under the old system, full discretion resided with the CC treasurer.
* 1914 Library Reform: CC proposed amending the schools policy that prevents the 1914 Library from using the proceeds of sales of books in its collection that can no longer be used for classes to benefit the 1914 Library. In the past, money from those sales was just put into the schools operating budget. Thus, the 1914 Library did not do the significant work necessary to make the sales. Under the proposal pushed by CC, the 1914 Library would be able to use that money to add to its book collectionwithout the school decreasing its current or future financial contributions to the library. The Provost's office agreed to change the policy. Thus, going forward, the 1914 Library will be able to sell its unneeded books and use the proceeds to purchase books for the 1914 Library collection.

Unsuccessful Projects

* Convenience Store: Since this project would require a large initial investment and produce little profit, the overall benefit of this project is not greater than its cost to the school. Thus, it would not have been able to offer lower prices than Ephporium. In addition, the school was unwilling to directly compete with Ephorium.
* Donation Reform: Recognizing the Colleges need to raise unrestricted funds, CC proposed allowing alumni to earmark a maximum of 50% of their donations to the school for any officially recognized student groups. The earmarks per alumnus would be capped at a maximum of $50 per alumnus per year. CC believed that this would increase the number of alumni donating to the school, increase the resources available to student groups and not take too much away from the schools unrestricted fundraising-if it encouraged more alumni to donate, it might even add to the unrestricted fundraising. Unfortunately, the administration worried that this program would encourage groups to directly solicit money from alumni and substantially detract from the pool of unrestricted donations. Since the school wants one point of contact with alumni and is determined to maximize its unrestricted funds, this project was unsuccessful.
* Lunch Equivalency: This program was rejected because there are already many lunch options and it would create a great financial burden on Dining Services. See the ready made lunches bullet for the compromise that was reached.
* Term Bill Laundry System: This projectputting laundry costs on term billswas brought to the Senior Staff and tentatively rejected. The school recommended resubmitting a more environmentally friendly program. The project also faces substantial financial hurdles. A substantial initial investment would be required to put this system in place.
* Concerts Endowment: This project progressed well through the spring and over the summer. By the beginning of the fall, CC had worked with administrators and altered it into a more flexible fund for any type of performance. The project had taken hold and was progressing nicely. Then the financial markets collapsed in September. As other financial priorities took over, this was put on hold. Given its initial success, it should be taken up when market conditions improve.

The good and the bad.

Belgian Beers
Try one of the Belgian offers that are usually available at Cole avenue and Spring Street:

Hoegaarden Witbier (the King of white beers) 5%alc.

Blanche de Bruges (white beer, which you are obviously supposed to have in a grail. awesome)

Duvel (golden ale, absolutely amazing, clean, balanced, crisp and oh so good, the King of Belgian Beer, period. This is what people in Bruxelles drink) 8.5%ABV. (Purple Pub now has 'Duvel Green' on tap which is the same brew but it doesn't go through the second fermenting in bottle, resulting in different flavors and a lower abv 6.8%)

Grimbergen (pretty darn sweet! abbey ale)

Lindeman's Lambic ale (flavored with cherries, peaches, etc...it's a highly unique beverage)

Stella Artois (import that thinks it's a domestic beer, not commonly found in Belgium as the locals know better)

Commentary on the above: Hoegaarden > Blanche de Bruges. Duvel and Grimbergen are tasty. Lindeman's tastes very different from normal beers, but there is no essential difference in the method of brewing. For a nice selection of Belgians, try the Beverage Den on Rt. 7 in Bennington. They've got Orval, Chimay, Rochefort, Witkap Pater, Cantillon Gueuze, Saison Dupont, de Ranke xx Bitter, and some other stuff. However, they do not have Brugse Straffe Hendrik, which is unfortunate. For cheaper belgian style beers, Allagash, Unibroue, and Ommegang are all awesome.

Other Imported Beers
If you hate the Belgians (and, after all, who doesn't?), here are some other great imported brews:

Samuel Smith - Oatmeal Stout, Imperial Stout, Taddy Porter, Pale Ale, Nut Brown Ale, and Winter Welcome Ale. (UK)

Unibroue - Le Fin du Monde, Trois Pistoles, U2, Ephemere, Terrible and others (Canada)

Celebrator Doppelbock (Germany)

Spaten - Optimator Doppelbock, Oktoberfest, Pils, and Premium Lager (Germany)

Newcastle Ale (UK) - One of my favorite brown ales. For those who like a slightly sweet beer with a just-bitter-enough aftertaste. Yum.

Guinness Brewers (Dublin) - Guinness (Irish stout), Harp (Lager), Smithwicks (ale) are all excellent. If you like a black and tan, Gunness and Harp is where it all started.

Sol (Mexico) - A mild, agreeable blonde.

Domestic Beers
Craftbrewed/Microbrewed Beers
Stone Imperial Stout

Sierra Nevada One of the largest CraftBrewers in the country. They have managed to grow to a national distribution without sacrificing quality. Their Pale Ale is a beer you will not regret trying.

Sam Adams Boston Lager Another large Craftbrewer. Their Boston Lager is quite nice. The Summer Ale is quite possibly one of the more perfect beers on a hot summer afternoon.

Otter Creek is absolutely fantastic. The Vermont Lager is one of their "year-round" beers, and it's probably the smoothest tasting of the bunch. If you're looking for a little more kick, the Pale Ale (also a year-round) is one of the best I've ever had. For even more of a bitter aftertaste, try the seasonal Alpine Ale and the Extra Special Bitter (I don't particularly love them, but you might). Another interesting seasonal is their Middlebury Ale, which is chock-full of blueberry taste. It's a bit overwhelming at first, but it's worth picking up a six-pack to try it out.

BBC brews up some mean beers. Almost anything by them is great, though the Steel Rail Extra Pale Ale is debatable. Support local beer! The BBC Imperial Stout is easily one of the best Imperial stouts you can get anywhere.

Tröegs Brewing Co. from PA brews a wonderful American Pale Ale.

The Long Trail Ale Brewing Co. (near Killington, VT) brews some great beers, the Double Bag (dusseldorf altbier 6.7%) is excellent.

Honey Brown is another great beer; brewed in Rochester, NY, it goes down smoothly but still has a great taste. Great as a casual beer, or with a meal. Relatively inexpensive, too...about as much as Coors Light, but so much better.

Macrobrewed Beers
Speaking of local beer, the residents of Currier S suite '10-'11 are known for their mad brewing skillz. Ask one of them for a sample!

Milwaukee's Best, aka "The Beast." A great first beer to try and a Williams favorite. Excellent, full flavor, it's a real beer experience yet light enough to play Beirut or Flipcup with. Very well priced for such a great beer. It's especially enjoyable if you burn off your taste buds on any given night.

Not sure what the previous person meant by the words "excellent" and "full flavor." Beast is generally acknowledged to be the cheapest beer available, and hence, it is immensley popular with college students. In addition, it goes down smoothly, and is great for froshies still "finding their way" in the drinking world. Beer is an aquired taste...this is why adults routinely enjoy beers with meals and at parties, whereas younger people typically "drink to get drunk." Given this fact, many college students (especially girls) find beer hard to drink initially. Beast (light, of course) solves this problem by diluting the taste while still allowing kids to get drunk. Overall, a great beer for large parties given its inexpensiveness and easyness to drink factor.

Rolling Rock - Perhaps not deserving of the "good beer" title, but it's one of the most drinkable cheaper beers out there. A 30-pack will set you back about 20 bucks, and it isn't half terrible. (also light enough for Beirut or similar games)

Yuengling is a good macrobrew, though hard to find in the Northeast.

Genny Light: Perhaps a slight mix between gasoline and sink water, this is simply not worth the intoxication. Your tongue will thank you if you just chugged rubbing alcohol instead. This is also a mainstay at Lehman Hall...so bring your own beer- unless you ask for different.

Bad beer
One easy way to judge whether a beer is bad or not is by the color of its can.
the so called "silver and blues" are generally the bad beers. ie beast, natty, busch etc...
This 'judging a book by its cover' works every time. Also, in case you hadn't noticed, not many good beers come in cans.

Don't be fooled into believing a beer is necessarily good if it is imported. Some of the overpriced, well-marketed "Euro" beers (e.g. Heineken or Stella Artois) can be just as bad as the American macros.
Spw1https://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Williamstown_Summer_2010&diff=20222Williamstown Summer 20102010-05-24T22:06:55Z
Spw1:

Places to go and Things to do
You can easily get by without a car during the school year. But when that 9-5 job ends, you're not left with much else to do because this is Williamstown, MA, after all. Here are some places in the "area" to spend some luxury time.

*Pittsfield is a bit closer than Vermont with 2 decent lakes. It's a "city." There's also Barrington Stage and The Colonial if you're interested in theatre/cultural activities and have seen everything at Williamstown Theatre Festival already.

*Lake Shaftsbury, VT. A short 45 minute drive away, Lake Shaftsbury offers a nice big lake with walking path around the lake, a dirt volleyball area, a wide open field for frisbee throwing and other events, paddleboats for rent, and more! $2 or $3 per person. Directions.

*Tanglewood. This performance space of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops is located in Lenox and is an outstanding location for a picnic and a concert. Try to get there before the end of the summer.

*Williamstown Theater Festival. It's here again this year. Students are allowed to purchase "Student Rush Tickets" to all performances starting three hours before curtain for $15. Otherwise, shows are pretty expensive, but it's an opportunity to see some good theater without going very far.
See Williamstown Summer 2010 for the scoop on this upcoming summer, including a list of student residents.

So you're thinking about summering in Williamstown? It seems that many scoff at the idea of spending any more time in this rural haven than is absolutely necessary, but summers in Williamstown can be quite enjoyable. The school itself offers a variety of lucrative employment positions and there is plenty to do in the surrounding area as well.

Jobs at Williams
A large percentage of the students who stay in williams for the summer are employed through various academic departments doing research for their theses, although working on campus doesn't exactly require such a project. Many departments will provide housing but no meal plan or perhaps the other way around, housing is generally around $35 per week and meals in packages of 5, 10, 14, and 21. Inquire to the department of your major for summer job opportunities; usually to get the job you must stay here for most of the summer. Another employer during the summer at Williams is the Conference Office. Information about the Summer Conference Office can be found on their website. Before spring break each year, the conference office jobs are posted on the website, daily messages and through campus mailings.

Research jobs include:
*SMALL math research program (students live in Garfield)
*physics research
*biology research
*chemistry research
*computer science research

Apart from research, there are plenty of other jobs on campus:
* The environmental studies department provides positions for Caretakers in Hopkins Forest, librarians in the CES library, and occasionally a gardner for the grounds around Kellogg House.
*Both Sawyer and Schow have student positions, although obviously fewer than during the school year. Library work is tedious, but pay is decent and it's all air conditioned.
*OIT conducts the summer Williams Instructional Technology (WIT) program
*Buildings and Grounds has some jobs, mostly what you would expect: Lots of hard work clearing brush or trash or whatever.
*The Admissions Office hires anywhere from 5-10 student representatives for the summer. It's one of the most sought-after positions on campus year round and the summer is pretty competitive as well, and unbelievably fun. The summer peaks in July and August where they really need people. Also, if you have other traveling plans, this is a great option for someone who wants to be in Williamstown for part of the summer instead of the entire time.
*The Theatre department holds the Summer Theatre Lab for six weeks June-August, in which students work with alumni and members of the Williamstown Theater Festival to workshop original material.

Jobs Off-Campus
Mass MoCA, various non-profits in North Adams and Williamstown, Tanglewood, Peace Valley Farm, the Clark Art Institute, and Overland Adventures all provide summer employment or internships. For many of these you'll need a bus pass or a car, the bus is reasonable and quick for North Adams. This is by no means an exhaustive list, the OCC probably has much more information. Many people who work in the surrounding area get alumni sponsored grants.

* Many recently graduated Ephs (and also not too recent) work at Waterfront Media in North Adams' Mass Moca.

Summer Living
Room
Summer on campus housing starts with a smaller scale room draw late in spring semester. Usually there will be only 2 or 3 dorms availiable. In past years, these have included Sage Hall, Morgan Hall, the Greylock dorms, Mission Park, and East. As mentioned earlier, past summers it's cost $35 per week, so if you want to stay away from home it's budget friendly.

Off-campus housing can be found on Meadow Street, above Goff's, and elsewhere on Spring Street, Hoxsey, and whereever else people with yearlong leases will be trying to fill up summer space.

Some departments (i.e., all of the sciences) will subsidize housing costs with purchase of a meal plan, or subsidize meal plans with purchase of housing. Other programs, like the SMALL summer Mathematics program, will take care of you entirely, paying for summer housing in a particular dorm.

Board
Often students living in summer housing will have to purchase a meal plan; 5 is the smallest. Meal plans cost $5 per meal; i.e. the 5-meal plan is $50 per two week pay period (the cost is automatically deducted from your paycheck). Every summer there is some upset about the lack of kitchen facilities, as the school prioritizes summer conferences and allocates many of the dorms with the best resources to programs like Nike Tennis Camp.

Still, Williams students find a way to eke out their existence. People who want to cook for themselves can us the CES kitchen in Kellogg House, the kitchen in Rice, and, if open, the kitchen in whichever Greylock dorm is in student use.

One dining hall is open for student use over the summer, and Grab and Go provides their usual lunch options during the week. Dining halls are shared with Williamstown Theatre Festival staff as well as summer sports students. Dining Services has been known to try out new menu options over the summer.

Summer People
See Williamstown Summer 2010 or the Official Facebook Group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=102952269750842#!/group.php?gid=102952269750842) for the scoop on this upcoming summer, including a list of student residents.

Regular Guests
Anyone content to stay here will find that beside other college students there are plenty of other youths around, some from the Williamstown Theater Festival and some from various sports camps. You'll know the latter have shown up when you see loads of blinging mercs and lexuses cruising around piloted by trophy mothers.

There are also a number of incoming freshman participating in the Summer Humanities and Social Sciences program or the Summer Science Program.

Also the Mellon Mays rising juniors and seniors live in Doughty House.

Things To Do
Surprisingly, the Berkshire region offers a fair amount of things to do during the summer. The most popular activities include:
*Williamstown Theater Festival (Free tickets for ushering)
*Concerts at Tanglewood
*Steeple Cats games and other summer fun in North Adams
*Fourth of July! (the fireworks in North Adams are awesome)
*River kayaking or tubing (for example, at Zoar Outdoor on Route 2)
*Green River swimming, tons of green river swimming, at all times of day
*WUFO maintains a summer pick-up listserv (last year: vindiesel@wso)
*Eat every flavor of ice cream at Lickety Split at least once.
*Eat at Lickety Split for 16 straight days.
*Watch every movie that comes to Images
*Lots of good beer-drinking outdoors, during the most beautiful time of the year.
*Play the empty Taconic Golf Club every day at dusk until 9pm
*Karaoke in North Adams at Gringo's Restaurant on Friday nights
*Outdoor beirut! The rooftop stadium behind the Harrison Gallery is a perfect spot.
Spw1https://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=Common_courtesy&diff=19662Common courtesy2010-03-15T23:01:28Z
Spw1: /* In dorms */

Suggestions, accumulated wisdom, and community norms for how to treat strangers with considerately. Please expand.

At doors
# Entering or exiting a building: look behind you to see whether anyone else is coming through the same door in the next 5 seconds. If the door will slam in the face of the person behind you, hold it open.
# If you see someone right outside, and opening the door would involve no more effort than extending your arm, go ahead and give it a push.
#* In particular, let the pizza dude inside, even if it ain't your pizza. We're lucky to get delivery here.
# If there are two doors going into a building, and a large number of people are squeezing through one while the other door remains closed, open and go through the unopened door so as to optimize the flow of traffic.
# If you see someone carrying boxes, ask if there's a door you can open.
# If someone is standing in front of a dorm with a sleeping bag and a prospectus, and appears to be under the age of 20, offer to swipe the person in. It is probably a pre-frosh.
# When smoking, don't huddle right outside the doors to the building. Nobody wants to walk through a cloud of smoke every time they need to enter or exit. There's been a rule against smoking within 25 feet of a campus building since 2003 anyway, not that anyone's ever gotten in trouble for it.

Around campus
# Say hello to people you meet. If someone else says hello to you, respond in kind. Bonus points for smiling while saying hello.
# Say "excuse me" rather than just pushing past people in a crowd or a constricted space.
# Wave to, nod, or mouth "thank you" to drivers who stop for you to cross on a pedestrian crossing. It's the law for them to stop, but it's still polite when they do because many don't.
#* Look both ways before you cross the street, even if you're at a crosswalk.
# If someone farts in Schow, make believe you didn't hear it. (Even though you did and it's hilarious)
# If possible, leave space on the sidewalk so others don't have to walk in water, mud, or snow. If you're walking in a group and one person comes in the opposite direction, move behind someone in your group so the person passing can use the sidewalk as well.
#* And be careful how you maneuver with that umbrella. You almost took my eye out.
# If you are innocently walking around campus in a crowd of people and you suddenly see Jack Bauer running after someone and he yells at you to get down, do it.

In Conversation
# DON'T interrupt someone while they're talking, no matter how insightful you think what you have to say is. This is one of the rudest things one could do in a conversation, though oftentimes people simply aren't aware that they are guilty of doing it. Instead, 1. make sure they've finished speaking and making their point, 2. *wait a half-second*, and then 3. go ahead and say what you wanted to say. And if you miss your chance because someone else chimed in before you, then oh well, life goes on. You're not as interesting as you think, anyway.

Online
# Don't write things in ALL CAPS. or all lowercase, for that matter. Ever.
# If you're done using a public computer, close all the windows so people know it's not in use. Log off, unless you want strangers to look through (and potentially modify) the non-public files in your [ftp://achilles.williams.edu Achilles account].
#You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, husband, non-monogamous partner, or simply his/her recent random hookup. Also can be stated as, "Thou shall not covet sloppy seconds."
#You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

In dorms
# When watching a movie when other people are present, don't talk (unless the movie is awful and the group as a whole wants to).
# Have some discretion when making out. Avoid egregious public displays of affection.
# If you cook in a kitchen, for God's sake, clean up after yourself, especially if you are using other people's cookware. Don't leave your spaghetti sauce on the stove top until spring break. If you cook and "that mess was there when I got here," just take a few minutes and clean it up anyway. Your guests probably don't want to eat in filth.
#*Don't take other people's ingredients. Don't use other people's cookware to store your food in. In fact, try to avoid using other people's cookware altogether, and, if you really must do so, do it so they aren't aware of the fact that you used their cookware (clean it, and don't do a half-assed job, either).
# Don't throw your old sardines, or any other stinky refuse, into the bathroom trash can. There is a trash room.
# Talk to your custodian.
# Don't destroy or abuse property. Particularly not if it belongs to somebody else.
# If you yak or see someone yak in a place that's a bit out of the way -- a basement, far-off corner, or anywhere that isn't a toilet, really -- make your best effort to tell someone responsible that there's a stinky, biohazardous mess on the floor.
# Don't sample random people's shampoo, toothpaste, face wash, etc just because it's in the bathroom.
# Turn off the television when you leave and no one else is watching, even if it's a TV in a public space. Especially if it's a TV in a public space.
#Don't steal. Some stealing is okay though, like <strike>stealing food and</strike> free stuff. Especially free stuff.
#* Stealing food is not okay! Don't steal food that's not yours. Other people get hungry sometimes too, especially for the food they have paid for themselves.
#*But stealing food from dining halls is perfectly acceptable. We already get ripped off enough by our meal plans and the hours of the dining halls.
# Keep in mind that you live with other people. Playing music loudly late at night when people are trying to sleep or study, especially after having been requested to turn it down, is incredibly rude. Be considerate and use common sense.
#*Blasting music in the quad, no matter what time of day, is unnecessary and inconsiderate. Not everyone shares your taste in music (and even if they do, they don't necessarily want to hear it thumping through their closed windows).
# Socializing in halls is a beautiful thing, but not so much at 3 a.m. during reading period. (Especially in dorms where doors and walls are thin!) Take those extra five steps and walk into someone's room.
# Smoking pot and setting off the fire alarms is not cool, especially at 3 am.
# Make sure the toilet actually flushes when you go. It's gross to have to flush someone else's bodily functions for them.
# Put seats down on toilets after you use them- not everyone can pee standing up.
#* Point of information: humans who are not naturally blessed with masculine plumbing may nonetheless enjoy a squat-free squirt by employing a Shewee, Whiz Plus, or LaFemme.
# If you should find yourself living in a dorm where walls/doors are thin (i.e., Morgan, other recently-renovated dorms), please refrain from flinging your door wide open and letting it SLAM! behind you, creating a deafening crash. This is highly annoying no matter what time of day it is.

In laundry rooms
# Knock the lint out of the lint screen after you use the dryer.
# Don't leave your laundry in the washer or dryer for hours after it's done. No one wants to touch your wet underwear to move it out of the way and other people like having clean clothes too.
#* If, by chance, the person before you has left laundry in the washer (we all do it once in a while) be so nice as to move the clothes into an empty drier, if available. You might as well, and it keeps them clean and away from the spilled bleach that is inevitably everywhere.
#** If you spill bleach in the laundry room, wipe it up.

In dining halls
# If there's only one omelet left at the dining hall, ask the person behind you if they want half.
#* Likewise, if you are offered a half of an omelet, ask the person behind you if they would like a quarter... and so on.
#* If there are "only" 6 chicken tenders left and only one person in line behind you, don't take more than half. Especially if you already have a burger on your plate.
# When putting up your tray in Driscoll or Mission Dining Hall, gently place your silverware into the cloudy blue dishwashing solution, don't throw it in there and splash everyone around you.
# Oh yeah, and don't try to compost paper cups, saltine wrappers, etc. -- there's a trash can for that.
# Compost your napkins and tea bags.
# Thank the cardswiper people in the dining halls.
# When putting your tray away at any dining hall, have the courtesy not to cut other people who are waiting in line to do the same thing, even if you are rushed. If you can't resist the urge to cut people when you are rushed, give yourself enough time to put your tray away before you need to leave for class or whatever else you need to go to after a meal.
#*On the subject of busing trays, please do just that. Don't leave random glasses, plates, or even full trays of food at your table, because it's disrespectful (and not to mention degrading) to the people who work hard to feed you.
#* In fact, don't cut people when you aren't rushed; for instance, in the line for First Friday. Being drunk and not wearing enough clothing on a cold night are not excuses.

Sustainability
# If the room is empty, and you're leaving, turn off the lights. Please.
# When in a library, kindly turn the light off when you leave a carrel.
# If you go outside to smoke, for crying out loud, throw away your cigarette butts when you're done. Littering is not cool, ever, and this is no exception.
#If you have a plastic/glass/aluminum container to toss, but the nearest public recycling bin is full, hang onto it until you come to one that isn't full rather than making a pile on top of the bin. The facilities staff should not have to remove dozens of empty bottles sitting on top of the container before they empty it.

In classes
# Don't fall asleep in a discussion class. Coffee is your friend.
#* If you must fall asleep in any class, try not to snore loudly or jolt awake too hilariously.
#* If you're likely to fall asleep in class, just skip and sleep. You're not likely to get anything useful out of the class period in that state, so you may as well catch up for later in the day.
# When engaged in debate, distinguish between criticisms of your argument and criticisms of your character.
#* Don't make the latter when you're trying to make the former.
#* Don't interpret the former as the latter.
# When you go into the language lab in Weston, hand your ID card to the monitor, don't just throw it into the bin.
# If you take notes on a laptop, especially in a large, dimly-let lecture (say, ARTH 101), turn the brightness down. It's easier on everyone's eyes--including your own!
#* Also, if you're "taking notes" on your laptop, don't make it too obvious that you're checking your email or watching video clips on YouTube. Resist the temptation to yell "Haw! Haw! That dog's wearin' a baseball cap!"
# Although your time is valuable, please do not start packing your bag/putting on your jacket three minutes before class ends. All that rustling is gosh-darn irritating to your classmates, and mad disrespect to your prof (whose final words are usually the most important).

Cell phones
# Before entering a classroom, a library, a concert, a lecture, a play, or a movie, put your cell phone on vibrate. PLEASE. (How about just turn it off or silence it completely? You can't answer it, why should you care if it's ringing?)
# If you are in the library and feel the need to talk to someone on your cellphone, have your conversation in an area where people aren't studying nearby. Also refrain from having loud, long conversations with other people while in the library when people are trying to study around you.
# Don't leave your cell phone on a table and then walk away. If it rings or vibrates, it will bother everyone.
# If you are in a dark space with others, such as a movie, don't text-message. The light from the screen is bright and very obnoxious.

Events
# If you are at a classical music or choir performance, or at the '62 Centre or movie theater, shut up during the performance.
# Do not loudly unwrap throat lozenges in the middle of the music or play. If you have a cough, it's best to unwrap one before the music/play/whatever starts, or during a break in the middle.
#*This can be very hard for someone with say, a cough. Perhaps excusable if you cover your mouth and try to muffle it.
# Do not clap between movements, or at any point where the conductor asks you not to clap.
# If you are 168 years or older, recall that you've suffered hearing loss. What seems to be an inconspicuous whisper to you is actually quite loud.
#* I'm sure all the senior citizens around Williamstown read Willipedia...
#* Where am I? Is this Yoohoo Tube? Can anyone hear me? Is this a virus? I got lost on the WebMD psoriasis page. Is this the Google?
# Don't bring small children.
# Take off your hat.
# Turn off or silence your cell phone - do NOT leave it on vibrate.
# Don't send text messages.
# Don't harrass your friends and/or strangers into seeing your sub-par performance. (However, if you are the subject of successful peer pressure, accede gracefully and find something nice to say.)
Spw1https://wso.williams.edu/wiki/index.php?title=2010_Co-op_Room_Draw&diff=194802010 Co-op Room Draw2010-02-15T23:41:16Z
Spw1:

On January 27, College Council passed the following resolution in support of re-opening the log. If you support the following resolution, please add your name to the petition.

2009-2010 Williams College Council

Resolution 08-0910
Introduced on January 13, 2010

Author(s): Ifiok Inyang ’11
Co-Sponsor(s): Michael Tcheyan ’10 and Emanuel Yekutiel

A statement of support and sponsorship for the reopening of The Log

WHEREAS The Log is a College institution steeped in tradition that has been enjoyed and cherished by several generations of students.

WHEREAS The Log has been closed since late 2007 and had been operating in a reduced capacity for the 5 previous years.

WHEREAS A reopened Log could serve as a venue for a diverse array of students, faculty, staff, and authorized guests to come together and share in an eclectic blend of positive social activities.

WHEREAS A reopened Log will have a subdued, pub-like atmosphere that encourages moderation: Programming plans include events such as open mic nights and literary readings along with pub quizzes and other creative events – no dance parties.

WHEREAS Along with a selection of alcoholic beverages, the bar will also serve juices, soft drinks, coffee, tea, gourmet sandwiches, baked goods, and light snacks.

WHEREAS A wristband ID system and highly trained staff will ensure that the venue, which will be open from Thursday to Saturday between the hours of 7 p.m. and midnight, operates in a safe, responsible, and successful manner.

LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Williams College Council:

1. Supports the reopening of the Log as a bar for the benefit of Williams students, faculty, staff, and authorized guests.

2. Endorses and agrees to sponsor the reopened Log as a vital and beneficial student space.

3. Commits up to $20,000 to financially supporting the reopening of the Log through the means at its disposal should the operation run a deficit. This guarantee is contingent upon the College administration’s approval of a plan to reopen the Log as a bar as well as the administration’s support for the startup costs of this project. The amount of guaranteed financial support is significant in relation to the semester operating costs of the Log.

4. Will devise a means for financing deficits should the Log run them, to be determined by the Treasurer in consultation with other Council members.

5. Will assess its support of the Log at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year, and does not guarantee financial support for the operation beyond this point.

First Reading: January 13, 2010

Adopted by Council on January 27, 2010, by a vote of 14-2-3
You can easily get by without a car during the school year. But when that 9-5 job ends, you're not left with much else to do. Here are some places in the "area" to spend some luxury time.

Help make room draw less stressing, let others know how big your group is and (if you know) where you're looking to pick into.

Oh, and no intimidation of other groups (such as "if we don't get into the singles in West, we'll harass whoever lives there all year") is allowed; if you do that, you could get kicked to the end of the room draw. Also, don't post anything during the actual room draw or from the room draw locations, as that is also not allowed.

Also, putting your class year rather than your class title ("'09" rather than "sophomore") might make things clearer since the distinction between current sophomore and rising sophomore might make things a little muddy.
